The role of multinational corporations in exporting manufactured goods from underdeveloped countries (eg, Mexico) has been heralded as a major contribution by their supporters, & downplayed by their critics. Three aspects of export behavior are analyzed: the share of output exported, the destination of exports, & the import content of exports. In most sectors, locally owned firms have a greater propensity to export than foreign subsidiaries. Subsidiaries send a higher share of their exports to regional markets, & their exports have a higher import content than those of local firms. 7 Tables. Modified HA.

Die vorliegende Replik bezieht sich auf den Aufsatz "Dependenztheorien und Wachstum" (KZfSS 33, 1981, S. 690-707), in dem Erich Weede empirische Erklärungen von drei Varianten der Dependenztheorie reanalysiert. Unter den von Weede kritisierten Erklärungen ist auch Bornschiers These, nach der die Wachstumschancen von Gesellschaften durch die Abhängigkeit von Auslandskapital (in erster Linie sind hier multinationale Konzerne gemeint) bestimmt werden. Bornschier sieht einen Überschichtungsprozeß, der von den entwickelten kapitalistischen Ländern ausgeht; dieser Prozeß vergrößert die Diskrepanz zwischen dem reichen (Minorität) und dem armen Teil (Majorität) der Weltbevölkerung. Nach Bornschier ist die Tätigkeit der Multinationalen für die überschichteteten Länder "positiv schädlich". Weedes Kritik richtet sich auf die Hypothese, daß die Kapitalabhängigkeit der Entwicklungsländer u.a. mit dem Wachstum des Durchschnittseinkommens zusammenhängt. Bornschier weist die Kritik zurück, indem er darauf verweist, daß Weede lediglich einen Teil seiner theoretischen und empirischen Ausführungen berücksichtigt. Im einzelnen setzt er sich mit technisch-statistischen Details auseinander; Bornschier verteidigt seine Vorgehensweise (Behandlung von "Ausreißern" bei der Datenanalyse) und zeigt, daß die empirischen Ergebnisse seine Hypothese "in ihrer vollständigen Form" durchaus bestätigen. Bornschier weist auf neuere Untersuchungen hin, in denen er sich mit den Effekten der Kapitalabhängigkeit in verschiedenen Zeitperioden beschäftigt. (JL)

The effect of transnational corporations (TNCs) on the economic development of African countries is examined. Mining & manufacturing TNCs are described with attention to their function, influence, & the problems they create. Political effects & influences of TNCs on less-developed countries (LDCs) are also discussed. It is concluded that positive relationships between TNCs & LDCs are possible only after LDCs have experienced certain internal political & SE changes. 5 Tables. P. Lore.

The impact of transnational corporations on the nutritional rights of inhabitants of the Caribbean islands in 1960-1980 is examined. The quantity & quality of land ownership by transnationals in agriculture, petrochemicals, & mining, & their nonuse & abuse of landholdings, evictions of poor peasants from their land, pollution of rivers, & infant-formula marketing, are shown to have an adverse effect on the food intake of Caribbean nonelites. 2 Tables. The changing role of the intrafirm trade of transnational corporations is given attention. In Third World primary product exports, the old order of intrafirm trade is changing to one of arms length relationships, & this is generating new problems in marketing. Transnationals are becoming more important than before in Third World exporting, & the new protectionism of the Organization of Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD) countries is encouraging this trend.
