Spinoza's Multitude
Tucker, E. 'Spinoza's Multitude", in A. Santos Campos (ed.) Spinoza: Key Concepts, Exeter: Imprint Academic, 2015Spinoza's 'multitude', while a key concept of his political philosophy, allows us to better understand Spinoza's work both in its historical context and as a systematic unity. In this piece, I will propose that we understand Spinoza's concept of the 'multitude' in the context of the development of his political thought, in particular his reading and interpretation of Thomas Hobbes, for whom 'multitude' was indeed a technical term. I will show that Spinoza develops his own notion of multitude as an interpretive extension of Hobbes's concept. Spinoza's notion of 'multitude' is shaped by the new answers he gives to the Hobbesian questions about the human power, human emotion and the metaphysical-political questions of how individuals can become a whole, or a state. 2015 (forthcoming).

(Autorenreferat)
Los individuos en la multitud ; The individuals in the multitude
; The Spinoza's political philosophy is based on the concepts of potentia and multitude, since political power is defined, according to him, by the potentia of the multitude. A strong cohesion of the multitude is basic to have political power. But this cohesion does not derive from a homogeneity of individuals. On the contrary, the strength of the multitude depends on the richness and the diversity of their individuals, together with the union that the search for the common good provides. Thus, the plurality and the richness of diverse, autonomous and critical individuals do not weaken political communities (but they strengthen them), neither individuality is lost in the multitude, but it becomes stronger.

This is an extended review essay of the book Radical democracy and collective movements today: The biopolitics of the multitude versus the hegemony of the people. In it, I examine the authors' attempts to synthesize the political theoretical approaches associated with Ernesto Laclau and Antonio Negri, and I argue that such a synthesis can only be an unstable one, since the two approaches operate with incompatible conceptions of ontology.
