Narcissus: Woman, Water and the West
In: Feminist review, Band 103, Heft 1, S. 42-57
ISSN: 1466-4380
This essay explores the symbiotic relationship between European modernity, its vision of woman and water. The union of these three metaconcepts is consecrated by the Ovidian story of Narcissus and his other, Echo. The West finally found itself completely through Hegel, the Ur-narcissist, who explains the immutable link between that European monopoly, history (by which he means the potential for becoming modern), and the sea. The narcissism of modernity is the great theme of Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifesto, which shows how the bourgeoisie seeks to remake the entire world in its own image. Psychoanalysis, through the writings of Ferenczi, joined in cementing the connection, likening woman to the primal sea to which the male ever yearns to return. And Foucault suggests a potential conclusion from this metaconceptual constellation: that Man, a Western creation, may well disappear like a face drawn on a sandy beach.

The democratic Narcissus ; El Narciso democrático
The transformations undergone by the communication system in Chile establish the disappearance of the public as a decisive component. Because of this concentration would be affecting the plurality and meaning of the social. However, it can be suggested that today there is a dimension of the public associated with new configurations and representations that depend on a governmentality of the media. She installs her work in the field of behavior and emotions and offers a narrative diversity to the identities that challenge the character of public policies.

Freud's Oedipus and Kristeva's Narcissus: Three Heterogeneities
In: Hypatia: a journal of feminist philosophy, Band 20, Heft 1, S. 54-77
ISSN: 1527-2001
The paper shows that three heterogeneities in Freud and Kristeva (unconscious/conscious, semiotic/symbolic, and imaginary/symbolic) expose the historical emergence, significance, and demise of psychic structures that present obstacles to our progressive political thinking. The oedipal and narcissistic structures of subjectivity represent the persistence of two past, bad forms of authority: paternal law and maternal authority. Contemporary psychoanalysis reveals a humankind going through the loss of this past in a process that opens up a different future of sexual difference in Western cultures.

USS NARCISSUS: THE ROLE OF THE TUGBOAT IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
This historical and archaeological study of USS Narcissus assesses how political and economic pressures experienced by the United States Navy during the American Civil War directly affected the Union's naval strategy and thus the decision to purchase specific types of vessels for use in the blockade. The results of this analysis validate the theory that the functional design and economic value of the screw-propelled tugboat led to the purposeful purchase of these vessels to serve as shallow-water blockade vessels and support craft. The archaeological investigation allowed archaeologists to identify this tugboat as the USS Narcissus. Specific measurements of the engine and hull remains allowed researchers to conclude that this type of vessel had an economical propulsion system and shallow draft that would have been best suited for a blockade ship in shallow water. Finally, an analysis of the historical and archaeological evidence enabled the author to suggest possible explanations for the catastrophic explosion that led to the demise of USS Narcissus. ; 2011-12-01 ; M.A. ; Department of Anthropology ; Masters
