The author analyzes the role of the constitutional judiciary & the traditional theory of the tripartite division of power. His radical conclusion is that the division of power in Montesquieu's sense, as a tool of control & balance in the modern state, does not exist. There is no social violence to which such balance, control, or correction could be applied. In such circumstances, the role, selection, & work of constitutional judges is of utmost significance for the control, correction, & balancing of political process. 4 Tables. Shaping national interests is of strategic & political significance for a state. In this process, economic, ideological, military, cultural, & other variable & invariable factors are intertwined. Their realization brings states into contact with other states. When one or several interests of one state run counter to the interests & objectives of another state, conflicts arise. This makes the protection of interests vital. States organize the protection of interests by means of a system of national security. National interests are values & objectives directed toward the development of a national community, while national security is an activity organized for their protection. A rational & realistic definition of national interests & the mechanisms of their protection are important elements of the stability of states & the international community. Seen in its totality, the defense system of France is enclosed within the NATO pact. The French do not deny this & even stress it as a fact of essential significance, because the mutual support & solidarity with allies in case of danger & aggression is a matter of interest to all. An analysis of the French conception of national security shows nevertheless that the stress is on independence, especially where making decisions about the use of particular forces (nuclear ones, in particularly) & the use of its territory by its allies. The French cherish their alliance, but in ways that will allow them to decide their own destiny without being obligated to accept common solutions & decisions on the part of the organs of the NATO pact. This fact explains the heightened interest for the study of the conception of national security & the defense system of France & its specific features when compared to the defense systems of other countries within NATO. 24 References. Using Quentin Skinner's & John Pocock's methodological guidelines, the author argues that the topic of the text by Pavao Ritter Vitezovic, Ozivljena Hrvatska (The Revived Croatia) is identity. The text establishes ethnic identity &, at the same time, provides the "tools" for the future "constructors of the nation" in their creation of national identity. Because of this, the author suggests that Vitezovic, due to the subject he covered -- ie, identity -- should be considered as part of the Croatian political science tradition. 19 References. The author analyzes the denotative, the connotative, & the metrical meaning of the term national feeling. Then he goes on to talk about the national feeling of Croats who used to have many problems connected with national identification. Their patriotism was channeled towards the creation of their own state. Because of that they were accused of nationalism, chauvinism, & genocidal tendencies. Despite that, they opted for a state of their own, managed to defend it from the armed aggression of a numerically & technically incomparably stronger enemy, thanks to social integration brought about by patriotism & love of country. However, owing to the constant pressure, the national feeling was accompanied by a feeling of guilt so that one fraction of Croats adopted the negative national identification. 2 Tables, 3 Graphs, 14 References.
