The purpose of the thesis, Socialism in Kansas: Reflections of the Peterson Brothers of Dodge City, Kansas, is to explain and analyze the Socialist Party of the state of Kansas. The views of two former Socialists, Henry and Pete Peterson, are incorporated with other materials to formulate the Socialists' story. / Chapter One deals with the background of the Socialist movement in the United States. It explains the formation of the Socialist Party with which the Kansas Socialists were affiliated. It also traces the development and decline of the national movement. Chapter Two explains the basic structure of the party and the party's efforts to expand membership in Kansas. In Chapter Three the aims and goals of the Socialist Party are outlined. The differences in the philosophy of socialism among individual members are analyzed. The party's efforts in political campaigns and their others activities are explained in Chapter Four. This chapter traces the successes and failures of the party in the electoral process. Use is made of election statistics to explain this aspect of the party's activities. Other activities, such as the party press, are discussed. Chapter Five deals with why the Socialist movement failed in the state. This includes an analysis of the basic weaknesses in the state party.

Some theoretical questions of developed socialism are considered in the article in terms of the experience gained in the Soviet .Union. The peculiarities of developed socialism in the Soviet Union were determined by a whole complex of historical, national-political conditions and international conditions under which the country developed. The developed socialism in the USSR is characterized by a powerful material and technical basis. The process of social integration and political consolidation at this stage marks a formation of a new historical community – the Soviet people. The Marxist-Leninist world outlook and collectivism have got firmly rooted in the Soviet society, the importance of spiritual motives in its life and activities has gradually increasing. The Soviet socialist way of life has become an important result of socialist development and an index of maturity of social relations. The experience of the Soviet Union testifies to high organization qualities of the developed socialist society. This society provides an optimum combination (within the limits of possible) of social, collective, and personal interests; it develops evenly and harmoniously.
The myth of the state is used for legitimating certain actions. For example, the ideologist of National Socialism, A. Rosenberg, used the term myth for the belief or conception of life which was to sustain the new state. The Third Reich's myth was the superiority and glory of the Aryan' race. In addition, Hitler compared the requisite official ideology or philosophy to a religion. It must be intolerant like a religion; it demanded total submission, organization and devotion to struggle. Even Hitler's comrade in arms, Mussolini, used similar language, although the substance was partially different. Thus in a speech at Naples in 1922, Mussolini said: "We have created our myth. The myth is a faith, it is passion. It is not necessary that it shall be a reality. It is a reality by the fact that it is a goad, a hope, a faith, that it is courage. Our myth is the nation, our myth is the greatness of the nation ! In the Third World, besides native traditions, there are ideas taken from the Christian or secularized West. The first type of appropriation may have taken place long ago or in our own time. Within Islam, an offshoot from Judaism and Christianity, the theocratic consciousness is highly evident. The holder of political power is the instrument of God and shall therefore be obeyed. The ruler, on the other hand, shall consult his subjects, and the believers shall do the same among themselves and assist each other in word and deed.
When Soviet Lithuania was liberated from the German invaders, together with the restoration and development of the national economy popular education was in the centre of attention of the Lithuanian Communist party and the Soviet Government. A successful development of the national economy and a constant support of our sister republics made it possible to increase the assignations to popular education every year. The assigned sums let us successfully put into life the undertaken task by our Party - compulsory seven-year education - and create conditions for passing on to universal secondary education. The best necessary conditions were made for a normal educational work at schools. They were provided with premises and school supplies. Teachers, workers ant youth showed a great initiative and patriotism. Thanks to them in our republic a new way of building schools began spreading. Hundreds of schools for tens of thousands of working places were reconstructed and built. Sister republics gave a great help in restoring schools and developing their material basis.

This thesis attempts to discuss a unique political phenomenon in North America - successful Canadian socialism. The first part discusses a workable definition of ideology and a theoretical approach to the explanation of legitimate ideological diversity. The second part of the paper explains the socio-economic and political milieu of Western Canadian society in the early twentieth century and the evolution of a consequent Anglophone socialist movement in response to this environment. The third part discusses concurrent Francophone political phenomena. Ideology is defined as an amalgamation of commonly agreed upon principles designed to promote a particular communal or national interest. Gad Horowitz' application of Louis Hartz' theory of ideological diversity in 'new' societies founded through European colonization is subsequently discussed. This theory posits socialism to be the dialectical outcome of a conflict between British toryism and nineteenth-century liberalism. Due to the background of Canadian immigration, Canada maintained a unique tory strain which shared the common element of collectivism with socialist ideology. This theorizes the acceptance of socialist thought in the midst of North American liberalism. Having discussed the theoretical aspects of ideological diversity, this thesis describes the principal socialist movement in early twentieth-century Canada which espoused the principles of the "social gospel". The paper traces the electoral success of the movement turned political party, the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, between the general election years of 1935 and 1962. While the party was never successful in forming the national government, many of its social welfare policies were adopted by the liberal centre out of political necessity. In the last chapter, a brief overview of the historical cultural, economic and political factors contributing to modern Quebec nationalist sentiment is presented along with an outline of the most significant nationalist movements in the province's twentieth-century political history. A comparison is drawn between the evolution of socialist ideology in Anglophone Canada and nationalist socialist ideology in Francophone Canada. In summation, Hartz' theory of ideological diversity does not argue the dialectical inevitability of socialism. It does, however, theorize the existence of this ideology in regards to the degree to which it is accepted. In this respect, the electoral success of socialist political parties is less important than the success of collectivist social movements. The principles of these movements have indeed had a significant impact on Canadian public policy making.
; An examination of the age and education of the 5250 sampled SS Führer revealed that, not only were there detectable differences in the officers who joined the various branches of the SS, but that age and education were also important factors in the evolution of the Führerkorps. Noticeable differences were found among the branches of the SS in terms of age and the achieved educational level of the officers. In the A/SS the older age groups and the more educated men were overrepresented, while the concentration camp guard units were officered largely by men whose education was at the lower end of the spectrum. The SD also attracted a high percentage of university educated men, however, the men who joined the SD differed from those who joined the A/SS in terms of age. The SD attracted younger men. This suggests that the SD was composed to a large extent of recent university graduates eager to make a career in the SS. Not surprisingly the military branch of the SS, the VT, attracted the youngest element in society. It is, however, interesting to note that inspite of the Verfügungstruppe's de-emphasis of education in favour of political reliability and physical stamina, a large percentage of the VT officer applicants had the traditional acceptable education for officer selection, the Abitur. In chronological terms it was seen that the less educated and younger element in society tended to join the SS during Phase I. It was the Machtergreifung which was the most influential event affecting the joining pattern of the sampled Führer. Shortly after Hitler's take-over, the university educated segment of society joined the SS. The Post-1933 joiners also tended to be older men, which suggests that it was in the second half of Phase II and during Phase III that the established element in German society joined the elite formation of National Socialism. On the basis of these quantitative findings, one can no longer view the SS as a homogeneous group, but must accept the fact that different types of men were attracted to different branches at different stages in the evolution of the Black Order.
The article attempts at juddgement of roots of Polish crises taking the international conditioning into consideration. There are variants of forecasts for the eighties formulated, on the grounds of the observed tendencies in the aspect of evolution of social and economic system and the cooperation with the West. Two regressive "paths" are distinguished which require substantial curbing; of links with the West as well as two progressive ones implying further inflow of accumulation of outside from the West. The variant resting on the assumption of extrapolating main trends of seventies is considered by the author to be the most probable. It involves also the tendency of further structural hybridization without removing the main reasons of inefficiency of the economic system i.e. lack of correct political verification of macroeconomic decisions and lack of mechanism of optimum investment allocation and motivation system. There is also a forecasting variant presented which implies a reduction of social antagonisms by means of the national compromise providing facilities for a transition to the real national State organized according to the rules of inclusive socialism (including a society in the process of exercising political and economic power). These rules should capacitate creation of the new economic model different from the Hungarian and Yugoslavian ones, which in the opinion of the author, do not ensure a correct utilization of external and internal accumulation and are likely to induce crises. Yet, this forecasting variant (labelled the path 4) is considered by the author to be the least probable on account of the adverse structure of social powers and a lack of practical experience. ; Digitalizacja i deponowanie archiwalnych zeszytów RPEiS sfinansowane przez MNiSW w ramach realizacji umowy nr 541/P-DUN/2016
A symposium paper on the then Rhodesia government's industrial policy, originally presented at symposium on Industry in Rhodesia, 11th and 12th June, 1969. ; The basic objective in the economic field of all Governments, but particularly of Governments of developing countries such as Rhodesia, is to achieve the maximum long term, rate of growth of the real wealth of the country. There are differences of opinion in the world today as to the best method of achieving this growth, and as to how the national wealth should be shared among the inhabitants of a country, but the aim of raising the standard of living of all citizens is common to all. In Rhodesia, our economic philosophy favours the private enterprise, capitalistic system as against the centrally planned and controlled economy of socialism or communism. We believe that the greatest level of efficiency in production and distribution is achieved by free entrepreneurs who are motivated by the desire for profit. We do not attempt to plan the future course of the economy in more than broad outline because we believe that the alert merchant or industrialist will react more quickly to changing circumstances than any central planning machine and will extract the maximum benefit therefrom. Human nature being what it is, it is not practicable for Government merely to foster the conditions in which private enterprise can best operate and then keep out of the way; completely laissez-faire capitalism is a century or so out of date; and some degree of Governmental control is today accepted everywhere as necessary, but our tendency is to control as little as possible and to remove these controls if the need for them has passed.
