This article explores the ways in which theories of political religion can contribute to our understanding of the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, & not least to the problem of the emotional enthusiasm they undoubtedly mobilized. The article contains comparative materials drawn from Germany, Italy, & the Soviet Union, & discusses such major thinkers as Eric Voeglin, whose 1938 essay on political religions was seminal to this approach. The article deals with separatism within Moravian fascism and National Socialism. It identifies fundamental links between ethnic nationalism and fascism, and describes the development of the 'Moravian question' within the context of Central European history. The separatist tendencies of Moravian fascism and National Socialism are examined in the context of the interwar history, the period of occupation of the Czech lands, and postwar developments, including contemporary tendencies. It also identifies similarities with and differences from some other ethno-national fascisms in Europe. The author concludes that although marginal, Moravian fascism and National Socialism have enjoyed a long existence.

Clemens August Graf von Galen (1878-1946) is popularly known as the "Lion of Münster" for his resolute opposition to Nazism, notably to Hitler's policy of euthanasia that was to cleanse Germany of the mentally retarded. Von Galen was the Bishop of Münster in Westphalia until he became a cardinal in 1946, shortly before his death. In the summer of 1941, he delivered three powerful sermons against euthanasia and the closing of monasteries. The sermons were secretly copied and distributed and also, much to the embarrassment of the Nazi regime, dropped as leaflets by the Royal Air Force over Germany. It is thanks to these sermons that Bishop von Galen has been widely recognized and indeed celebrated as a resister against National Socialism.
