The history of medicine this century is darkened by the downfall of the German medical profession, exposed during the doctors' trial at Nuremberg in 1946. Relying largely on documents published during 1933 in German medical journals, this paper examines two widely accepted notions of those events, metaphorically termed "slippery slope" and "sudden subversion." The first connotes a gradual slide over infinitesimal steps until, suddenly, all footing is lost; the second conveys forced take over of the profession's leadership and values. Both concepts imply that the medical profession itself became the victim of circumstances. The slippery slope concept is a prominent figure of argument in the current debate on bioethics. The evidence presented here, however, strongly suggests that the German medical community set its own course in 1933. In some respects this course even outpaced the new government, which had to rein in the profession's eager pursuit of enforced eugenic sterilizations. In 1933 the convergence of political, scientific, and economic forces dramatically changed the relationship between the medical community and the government. That same convergence is occurring again and must be approached with great caution if medicine is to remain focused on the preservation of physical and medical integrity.

International audience ; The central question of this chapter is about socio-historical implications of colonialism for ways of dealing with deviance in the metropoles. Postcolonial studies metaphorically talk about the colonies as "laboratories" of modern societies. Indeed, a series of political reforms and interventions aiming at society as a whole or, to put it more strongly, at creating the "ideal society", have been experimented with in the colonies. The historical development of the European metropole was heavily affected by the colonial experience (either simultaneously or with some time-delay), an insight that leads to rejecting any assumption of a uni-directional "modernisation"-flow.We will see that there are obvious continuities in terms of social thought. Concrete connections between organizational, institutional and juridical forms of dealing with deviance are more difficult to describe in clear-cut terms, if we do not want to fall into simplistic accounts of a complex story. In the conclusion, we will have to reconsider Baumann's claim that the Holocaust has to be understood as the product of modern society and of a highly developed civilization.

Desde este punto de vista, el nacionalsocialismo demostró que la Razón por sí sola no salva al mundo de la barbarie. ; The Nacional Socialist totalitarian project unleashed an unprecedented savagery in Europe, giving raise to the largest war to have taken place in our history and to a never before seen systematic genocide. In opposition to those who consider this way of savagery as something purely irrational, the truth is that Nazism's savagery was product of a "rational" project which would have its roots in the period of the Enlightenment. The cruel and inhuman murder of millions of people was the result of a perfectly planned, systematic, and rational act, supported in a bureaucracy which made easier the creation of a series of psychological barriers by perpetrators and whose traces were intended to be erased from history. From this point of view, National Socialism showed that Reason by itself does not save the world from savagery.

It was extremely nationalistic and anti-liberal. Furthermore, anti-Semitic attitudes were prevalent. Even more radical were members of the intellectual circles of the "Conservative Revolution" In the 1920's. They opposed the recurrence of the Kaiserreich and hoped for a powerful German empire, that would restore the country's worldwide recognition. In this respect, the vast majority of the conservatives appreciated the "national revolution" in 1933, and hoped to instrumentalize the movement of the National Socialists in this spirit. When this did not work out and the Nazi-regime openly planned a war, and even more when the defeat in the Second World War became apparent, many conservatives abandoned politics; a few even joined the resistance and risked their lives.

This book provides a view of literary life under the Nazis, highlighting the ambiguities, rivalries and conflicts that determined the cultural climate of that period and beyond. Focusing on a group of writers – in particular, Hans Grimm, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, Wilhelm Schäfer, Emil Strauß, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen and Rudolf Binding – it examines the continuities in völkisch-nationalist thought in Germany from c. 1890 into the post-war period and the ways in which völkisch-nationalists identified themselves in opposition to four successive German regimes: the Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic.

Die 1948 im Auftrag des US-amerikanischen Militärgouverneurs in West-Deutschland, General Lucius D. Clay, von dem Journalisten Melvin J. Lasky gegründete Zeitschrift Der Monat besaß für die politische und geistige "Westernisierung" der frühen Bundesrepublik eine kaum zu überschätzende Bedeutung. Sie gehörte in eine Reihe der zahlreichen politisch-kulturellen Zeitschriftenorgane, die nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges unter der Ägide der westalliierten Besatzungsbehörden, zumal der US-amerikanischen, im Nachkriegsdeutschland mit dem Ziel ins Leben gerufen wurden, nationalsozialistisches Gedankengut durch demokratisches zu ersetzen. Gleichwohl steht Der Monat gemeinhin im Ruf, ein Kind des Kalten Krieges und ein spezielles Instrument des US-amerikanischen Geheimdienstes CIA im Kampf gegen den Kommunismus gewesen zu sein. Insbesondere nach der Aufdeckung, dass die international bekannte linksliberal-antikommunistisch ausgerichtete Intellektuellenorganisation Kongress für kulturelle Freiheit jahrzehntelang finanzielle Unterstützung von der CIA erhalten hatte, bekam diese Kritik neue Nahrung. Denn Der Monat war organisatorisch, personell, inhaltlich und funktional mit dem Kongress eng verbunden. Während der Beitrag des Monat (wie auch des Kongresses) für die Genesis der westdeutschen Nachkriegsdemokratie durch diverse Untersuchungen erforscht ist, stellt hingegen die vergleichende Analyse des Totalitarismus nationalsozialistischer und sowjetkommunistischer Couleur ein Forschungsdesiderat dar. Dabei besaß aus politischen Gründen insbesondere die Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte des "Dritten Reiches" und des Sowjetkommunismus sowie vor dem Hintergrund der zeitgenössischen Totalitarismustheorien der Vergleich zwischen diesen beiden totalitären Herrschaftssystemen in dem Periodikum eine herausragende Bedeutung. Hier setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an. Die Kritik des Nationalsozialismus und des Sowjetkommunismus in der Zeitschrift "Der Monat" lässt sich von folgenden zentralen Fragestellungen leiten: Welches Bild zeichnete die Zeitschrift vom nationalsozialistischen und sowjetkommunistischen Herrschaftssystem? Wie wurden die beiden totalitären Herrschaftssysteme vergleichend analysiert? Wie ist der Vergleich zwischen der "braunen" und der "roten" Diktatur ausgefallen? Welche Rolle spielten in diesem Zusammenhang die zeitgenössischen Totalitarismustheorien? Auf welches totalitarismustheoretische Modell stützte sich die Zeitschrift bei der Kritik der beiden totalitären Herrschaftssysteme in erster Linie? Gab es bei der (vergleichenden) Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte des "Dritten Reiches" und dem aktuellen sowjetischen Kommunismus erkennbare Lücken der Berichterstattung und der kritischen Reflexion? Mit Blick auf die Geschichte der "Hitler-Diktatur" heißt das insbesondere: wurden bestimmte Aspekte und Themenfelder der politisch-justitiellen Auseinandersetzung mit den Folgen des nationalsozialistischen Herrschaftssystems und seiner Verbrechen ausgeblendet? Erfüllte der "Monat" hinsichtlich der Kritik des Nationalsozialismus und des Sowjetkommunismus den von der Redaktion propagierten Antitotalitarismus? Vor dem Hintergrund des Kalten Krieges wird zudem danach gefragt, ob sich bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem nationalsozialistischen Totalitarismus und seinen vergangenheitspolitischen Dimensionen in der inhaltlichen Ausrichtung zeigen lässt, dass sich die Imperative der US-amerikanischen Besatzungspolitik in Westdeutschland gewandelt hatten? Und lässt sich angesichts der CIA-Finanzierung des "Kongresses für kulturelle Freiheit" beim "Monat" eine Redaktionspolitik feststellen, die auf Direktiven des US-amerikanischen Geheimdienstes zur Steuerung des Publikationsorgans hindeuten? Insbesondere auf der Basis einer Inhaltsanalyse sämtlicher Hefte der Zeitschrift in den Jahren 1948 bis 1960 kann u. a. gezeigt werden, wie in dem angezeigten Untersuchungsfeld eine Redaktionspolitik betrieben wurde, die den politisch, ideologischen und kulturellen Interessen der Vereinigten Staaten entsprachen, und in einem direktem Zusammenhang standen mit den CIA-Hintergründen des Kongress für kulturelle Freiheit. Hierbei wurde über die Auswahl und Autoren, die Festlegung von Grundlinien der Berichterstattung und Kommentierung und vor allem durch das Ausblenden von bestimmten Themen im Vorfeld wichtige Weichen gestellt, außerdem die Instrumentalisierung von politischen und wissenschaftlichen Publikationen und Totalitarismusstudien prominenter Autoren (z. B. Hannah Arendts und George Orwells) einschloss. Angesichts der durch den Kalten Krieg ausgelösten Entscheidung der Vereinigten Staaten für die Westbindung und die Wiederaufrüstung des ehemaligen Kriegsgegners stand dahinter das politische Ziel, die Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus und seiner Massenverbrechen zu relativieren und zu neutralisieren, die Wehrmacht als Institution zu rehabilitieren sowie die Mitverantwortung und Mitwirkung der militärischen, bürokratischen, diplomatischen, medizinischen und wirtschaftlichen Eliten zu kaschieren, was ihr Integration in die Nachkriegsgesellschaft erleichterte, und andererseits den sowjetischen Kommunismus zu delegitimieren. Dieser Prozess der Reintegration der ehemaligen NS-Eliten in die westdeutsche Nachkriegsgesellschaft koinzidierte mit einer fundamentalen Uminterpretation der Geschichte des NS-Regimes und der deutschen Massenverbrechen. Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges vollzog sich in der veränderten politischen und militärischen Landschaft auch im Monat bei der Auseinandersetzung mit der Totalitarismustheorie ein entscheidender Paradigmenwechsel: weg von einem eher antifaschistischen und antinationalsozialistischen hin zu einem primär antikommunistisch ausgerichteten Totalitarismusverständnis, in dem für den italienischen Faschismus kaum mehr Platz war. Bildete bis dahin der Faschismus bzw. der Nationalsozialismus das Modell, an dem die kommunistische Variante gemessen wurde, übernahm fortan die stalinistische Sowjetunion diese Rolle. Wie in der Wissenschaft wurde auch in dem wichtigen Zeitschriftenorgan der Nationalsozialismus – im Gegensatz zur Sowjetunion – als noch nicht voll ausgereiftes Muster totalitärer Herrschaft gekennzeichnet. Auf diese Weise verblieb der stalinistische Bolschewismus als eigentlicher Modellfall des Totalitarismus. Quasi als eine Bündelung der einzelnen Untersuchungsergebnisse kann festgehalten werden, dass der von der Zeitschriftenredaktion des Monat propagierte antitotalitäre Anspruch hinsichtlich der vergleichenden Beschreibung und Analyse des nationalsozialistischen und sowjetkommunistischen Herrschaftssystems in erster Linie als Antikommunismus verstanden und nicht eingehalten wurde; hierbei existierten Parallelen zum Kongress für kulturelle Freiheit. Die beiden totalitären Herrschaftssysteme wurden einschließlich ihrer länderspezifischen Vorgeschichte sowohl was quantitative als auch qualitative Aspekte anbelangt mit unterschiedlichen Maßstäben untersucht. Außerdem wurden im Kontext der politisch-justitiellen Auseinandersetzung mit der nationalsozialistischen Geschichte zentrale vergangenheitspolitische Themen und Dimensionen ausgeblendet und gegen die neonazistischen und rechtsradikalen Gefährdungen in der Bundesrepublik erst in der zweiten Hälfte der 1950er Jahre deutlich Position bezogen.

В статье анализируется проблема взаимоотношений и полифонии идей консервативной революции и национал-социализма. Идеи двух праворадикальных направлений Веймарской республики рассматриваются сквозь идею формирования германского национального государства и противопоставление демократическим принципам Веймарской республики. Доказывается, что консервативная революция и национал-социализм представляли собой два проекта формирования национального государства в Германии. ; In article the problem of relationship and polyphony of ideas of conservative revolution and national socialism is analyzed. Ideas of two far-right directions of the Weimar republic are considered through idea of formation of the German national state and opposition to democratic principles of the Weimar republic. It is proved that conservative revolution and national socialism represented two projects of formation of the national state in Germany.

This paper will offer a history of the reception of Friedrich Nietzsche's thought from the fact of his perverse use by National Socialism. Firstly, the process of politization, germanization and nazification of his thought will be analysed, showing how this was facilitated through the mutilation of Nietzsche's work done by his sister. Secondly, the various strategies implemented from the 30s to depoliticize and denazificate his thoughtand work will be described. Last, a brief summary about the topic «Nietzsche and National Socialism» will be presented. ; Este trabajo ofrece una historia de la recepción del pensamiento de Friedrich Nietzsche a partir del hecho histórico de su perversa utilización por parte del nacionalsocialismo. Se analiza, en primer lugar, el proceso de politización, germanización ynazificación del pensamiento de Nietzsche, facilitado por la mutilación de su obra que realizó la hermana del filósofo. Se describen, en segundo lugar, las diversas estrategias de despolitización y desnazificación del pensamiento y la obra nietzscheanos, aplicadas desde la misma década de los años treinta del siglo pasado. Se ofrece, en tercer lugar, un breve resumen sobre la cuestión «Nietzsche y el nacionalsocialismo».

This dissertation examines sermons delivered by Confessing Church pastors in the Nazi dictatorship. The approach of most historians has focused on the history of the Christian institutions, its leaders, and its persecution by the Nazi regime, leaving the most elemental task of the pastor – that is, preaching – largely unexamined. The question left unaddressed is how well did Confessing pastors fare in articulating their views of the Nazi regime and the persecution of the Jews through their sermons? To answer this question, I analyzed 910 sermons by Confessing Church pastors, all delivered or disseminated between 1933 and the end of World War II in Europe. I argue that new trends in preaching popular among Confessing Church pastors discouraged deviation from the biblical text in sermons, and thus one result was few criticisms concerning German politics and society. Nevertheless, a minority of pastors criticized the Nazi regime and its leaders for their racial ideology and claims of "Aryan" superiority, and also for unjust persecutions against Christians. They condemned Nazism as a morally corrupt ideology in contradiction to Christianity. Further, I argue that these sermons provide mixed messages about Jews and Judaism. While on the one hand, the sermons express admiration for Judaism as a foundation for Christianity and Jews as spiritual cousins; on the other hand, the sermons express religious prejudice in the form of anti-Judaic tropes that corroborated the Nazi ideology that portrayed Jews and Judaism as inferior. In the final section of the dissertation I explore the ministries of German pastors of Jewish descent and argue that they not only experienced persecution from the Nazi state, but also from their own congregations. Nevertheless, the themes of their sermons are consistent with those found in those of their colleagues.My research demonstrates that the German churches were in fact places to offer criticism of the Nazi regime, which was often veiled through biblical imagery and metaphor. Yet the messages reveal criticism from a position of obedience and subservience to the state, and at the same time the expose a confused ambiguity about the Jews and Judaism and their relation to Christians in Nazi Germany.

– ; Herman Stehr (1864–1940) belonged to the generation of writers who had the chance to es­tablish a serious opposition against National Socialism during the Weimar Republic, the Fascist movement and the Third Reich. Not only their age but also their experience predestined them to assume such an honourable position. Hermann Stehr, at the early stage of his career, was considered a modern writer, not only because of his writings but also because of his political views, when in the 1920s he took an active part in the building of democratic structures of the Weimer Republic. Around 1930/31 a change occurred his work and in his political views.From this time onwards he actively supported the Nazis and legitimized their politics in his writings both nationally and internationally. The symbiosis between him and the Nazis became more and more visible as they started promoting him as one of the leading German writers.The aim of this paper is to present one of the most renowned German authors of the first half of the 20th century, who due to his conformism during the Third Reich lost his chance to defend humanistic values.Consequently, this paper proves that it is a grave error to classify Stehr, a writers of conservative views, as part of Inner Emigration.Hermann Stehr most certainly did not belong to that group.

La asunción de Hitler como canciller del Reich impactó de diversa manera sobre los germano-parlantes de la Argentina. Entre quienes aceptaron al nuevo orden se encontraban los redactores del semanario entrerriano Der Russlanddeutsche, dirigido a los "alemanes de Rusia". El artículo analiza la recepción que en aquel periódico tuvo el nacionalsocialismo, desde su consolidación en el gobierno hasta las vísperas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Centra su atención en las formas en las que el régimen de Hitler y sus políticas influyeron en la autopercepción del semanario y de sus lectores. Estudia además el modo en que aquella experiencia incidió en su relación con el resto de quienes se identificaban como alemanes y en su vinculación con distintos sectores de la vida argentina, en un momento de gran fluidez cuando aún el Tercer Reich no había tomado la dimensión del símbolo del mal absoluto. ; Hitler's ascent to the chancellorship of the Reich had a diverse impact on German speakers in Argentina. Among those who accepted the new order were the editors of the Der Russlanddeutsche, a weekly newspaper from the province of Entre Ríos catering to the "Germans from Russia". The article analyzes the reception that periodical gave to National Socialism, from its consolidation as government to the eve of the Second World War. It focuses on the ways in which Hitler's regime and its politics influenced the self-perception of the weekly and its readers. It also studies how their experience impacted on their relations with others who identified themselves as German, as well as with other sectors in Argentine life, in a moment of great fluidity, when the Third Reich had still to take its dimension as a symbol for absolute evil.

Nowadays, the extreme right political movements resurgence, whose success is partly consequence of some manifestations that could be considered as performative, are increasing in Europe. Employing a staging attitude to make them known, these skills are clearly used as tools into a provocative show. In this regard, these conducts could be related to The National Socialism regime manifestation of power, among other events that took place one century ago in Europe. It should be also referred the use of art as both communication and manipulation tool regarding their political discourse. It is striking to find that these situations are taking place at present in democratic countries. This paper proposes a revision on the III Reich aesthetics, referring to some cultural elements that were used to design its own appearance. In order to do this, they deconstructed and denigrated the fragmentary components from the previous avant-garde art, to construct their new totalitarian reality.

Am Spiegelgrund, originally an exclusively topographic term, during WW II designated one of the most important killing facilities in the 'children's euthansia' program. It was part of the City of Vienna's public health and welfare system. Its creation in 1940 coincided with attempts to establish Therapeutic Pegagogy as a new discipline in Germany, based on the principles of race hygiene and dominated by the influence of medical doctors. With 'children's euthanasia' an organisation was created that allowed the permanent selection and extermination of children who were deemed of little or no biological or economic value to the German body politic. Everywhere, children and youths were assessed, segregated, and selected in order to separate the 'worthy' from the 'unworthy.' Between 1940 and 1945, altogether 789 children and youths lost their lives in the Spiegelgrund facility. The systematic identification of potential victims for this campaign was only possible due to the cooperation of numerous institutions and individuals. The most important among them was the City of Vienna's Children Admittance Center (KÜST), but there were also important connections to Vienna University, most importantly to the Pediatric Clinic under Prof. Franz Hamburger. One of his assistants, Dr. Elmar Türk performed lethal tuberculosis experiments on children from Spiegelgrund.
