Noted is the widespread concern expressed in the British press, especially during the year 1977, at the apparent increase in National Front (NF) electoral support. The votes won by NF are exhaustively examined, covering parliamentary elections over the 1968-1978 period & local elections. Two systematic variations are found: the NF vote is slightly higher where it is not in competition with a Liberal, & slightly lower at a general election than in by-election or local election conditions. The only trend over time is an increasing number of NF candidates nominated but without any growth in NF support. With the possible exception of one part of Greater London, the NF's electoral appeal did not change over the ten year period from 1968, & was the same as that of its predecessor parties in the preceding decade; this finding is shown to be consistent with opinion poll evidence on the constancy of attitudes on immigration. The reasons for such misleading accounts of the NF's electoral performance are discussed. 8 Tables. Modified AA.
