Um den Konflikt zwischen EU-Befürwortern und -Kritikern zu beschreiben, wird häufig das wirtschaftspolitische Gegensatzpaar "ökonomischer Nationalismus" versus "globalen Freihandel" bemüht. Der vorliegende Beitrag nimmt das britische EU-Referendum zum Anlass, sich kritisch mit dieser Dichotomie auseinanderzusetzen. Entlang einer wirtschaftssoziologischen, diskursanalytischen Untersuchung von rund 400 Kampagnendokumenten zeigt sich, dass dieses Gegensatzpaar die wirtschaftspolitischen Standpunkte von Gegnern und Befürwortern des Brexit nur unzureichend beschreibt. Es wird deutlich, dass insbesondere die Position der EU-Skeptiker durch die Integration gegensätzlicher wirtschaftspolitischer Idealbilder und historischer Argumente geprägt war. Diese Unbestimmtheit erlaubte wiederkehrende Verweise auf unterschiedliche wirtschaftspolitische Traditionen Großbritanniens: einer Wirtschaftsnation, deren Selbstverständnis historisch sowohl von Nationalismus als auch von Globalismus, sowohl von Liberalismus als auch von Interventionismus geprägt wurde und die daher gleichzeitig nach ökonomischer Öffnung und ökonomischer Schließung strebt. Die Fähigkeit der Brexit-Befürworter, ein heterogenes Bündnis zu mobilisieren, könnte somit auch darin begründet liegen, dass es ihnen gelang, eine potenzielle ökonomische Zukunft zu skizzieren, die verschiedene Facetten der ambivalenten ökonomischen Identität Großbritanniens anspricht und damit für verschiedene Weltanschauungen und Interessen anschlussfähig erscheint.

This lecture explores the processes of identity-making and state-building in a multi-ethnic and multiracial society recently emerging from a protracted armed struggle against racially ordered, settler-colonial domination. It explores the extent to which historical factors, such as the nature of the state, the prevailing national political economy, and regional and international forces and developments have shaped notions of belonging and citizenship over time and have affected state-building efforts. The role of the postcolonial state and economy, political developments and the land question in shaping the postcolonial dispensation is also examined. The lecture argues that, like most African states created by colonialism, Zimbabwe is not yet a nation and that it is only in the process of becoming. It also comments on the role of historians in shaping notions of nationhood and identity.

On 5 August 2019, India's home minister Amit Shah made a shock announcement revoking India's constitutional guarantee of autonomy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This article focuses on the wider ideological context of Hindu nationalism that has spurred this decision in order to assess the move's far-reaching implications for Indian democracy and peace in South Asia.
In addition to the revocation of autonomy, a key condition of Kashmir's accession to India, India has further partitioned the state into two parts and downgraded its status to a centrally administered territory. This consolidation of the hard-line stance taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in Kashmir since assuming power is bound to fuel further alienation and resentment.
The unilateral decision calls into question India's other federal arrangements too - for instance, with states in India's north-east that also enjoy various degrees of autonomy, increasing the chance of disaffection and instability within the country.
The decision also has the potential to spark tensions with Pakistan and China, both of which occupy portions of Kashmir's territory. Pakistan, which lays claim to the entire Muslim-majority province, has already downgraded its diplomatic relations with India. China, which claims rights to the north-eastern portion of Kashmir, has also issued a warning.
Increased disaffection among the Kashmiri population is also likely to spur intervention by non-state Islamic groups, resulting in long-term strife.
According to a Hindu Right dictum, only a display of might will get India its due in the world. This high-risk manoeuvre in Kashmir appears to be the Modi government's way of testing this axiom. The consolidation of Hindu nationalist politics in India suggests the government is likely to take a more belligerent stance in world politics, especially in issues concerning national security. EU decision-makers can expect to deal with a more uncompromising and hard-line India in their future engagements with the country.

The conflicts in Liberia, Eastern DRC and Côte d'Ivoire can be "read" as "wars of modernity" as they are concerned with the composition of their respective polities: who is a citizen and who is not. However, these contemporary conflicts are deeply embedded in a long history of violence: integral to this history is the issue of land. Citizenship in itself does not secure access to land, but at the very least it allows those with this status a legitimate entry to the competition for land. There is therefore a direct link between contested citizenship and land rights issues. Drawing on fieldwork material from the above-mentioned countries, this article will show how localised identity narratives under certain circumstances destroy as well as reformulate national identities, and that insight from ethnographic work on autochthonic issues can help us understand conflicts in a broad range of African countries.
