THIS IS A REPORT of seven and one-half months of an on-going study of suicide and suicide attempts among the Navajo people. The study was undertaken in order to define the magnitude of the problem and to identify the high risk population. To date there have been only a few studies on successful suicides and even less on suicide attempts. A suicide report form was constructed. Copies were made available to all facilities serving the Navajo Indian Reservation. The psysician first having contact with a pateint filled out the form and returned it to the authors for review and tabulation. Results show that the highest risk group is younger than the general psychiatric population served. Drug ingestion is the most common method used. We have not found great differences between this population and other non- Indian populations described in the literature. This is true in respect to methods used as well as precipitating events. It seems clear that suicide attempt is a real problem for the Navajo. It is no greater, however, than for other groups of people.

At the time his wife, Anna, and their three boys Sam, Jr. (1889-1944), Charles Day (1879-1918) and William remained in Colorado. The family joined Sam, Sr. in Arizona, where they staked out a homestead at Cienaga (Sinagee). He was elected to the Arizona Territorial Legislature in 1906 and served two terms in the Arizona House. From 1920 until his death in 1925 he held the post of United States Indian Commissioner. Sam, Sr., moved from Sinagee in 1901. His Sinagee ranch became part of the St. Michaels Mission. He joined son Charlie at Bill Meadows trading post, but eventually moved to the mouth of Canyon de Chelly and with his sons, Sam, Jr. and William, established what was to become the famous Thunderbird Trading Post.

Three articles on different aspects Of American Indian health. The first article, Navajo Health Concepts and Behavior from the Tuba City Hospital Bulletin, discusses the Navajo concepts of health, sickness and cures and explains that these beliefs are tied to their religious beliefs. The second article, Some Problems of the Physicians on the Navajo Reservation, outlines some problems that young doctors confront when working on the Navajo Indian reservation. The problems include dealing with cultural differences, living in an isolated social and medical community and learning to work for a government organization. The last article, Dinetah if I Forget You, explains the meaning of Dinetah and its ties to the Navajo ethnic identity and the supernatural. Some of the clan mythology is discussed including that of Changing Woman and her instructions on how to build a hogan. The importance of value systems and rituals and ceremonies to the Navajo people are also covered. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: In 1959 Dr. Veronica Evaneshko moved to Arizona to work a stint at St. Joseph's Hospital. She then joined the Kennecott Copper Corporation as an Industrial Nurse, a position she held until 1966. The following year Veronica graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS with distinction in Nursing. In 1974 she wrapped up doctoral work in Anthropology.In the late 1980s Veronica accepted the data abstraction management assistant position for the Navajo Area Indian Heath Services, Nursing Midwifery Branch. In the early 1990s Veronica accepted a three year contract with the Pascua Indian Health Department as a project director for the Health Promoter Program for Elder Diabetics. In 1992 she became the Principal Investigator for the Urban Indian Needs Assessment funded under the Traditional Indian Alliance. In 1994 she became the Principal Investigator for the Navajo Case Management Studies at the Native American Research Center. The Veronica Evaneshko Collection consists of numerous published resources on diabetes, especially related to the Navajo, Medical reports on other tribes are also included in the collection. There is data on all aspects of American Indian health, such as culture mores and sanctions, and how to introduce Western medicine gradually by mixing the traditional and the "contemporary." The majority of the collection includes many teaching tutorials and weight management guides for communities. Information on Otitis Media can also be found.

This collection pertains to Public Health Nursing among Native American people, with emphasis on the Navajo Tribe. This collection consists of correspondence, a manuscript, a questionnaire, and responses, personal reminiscences, articles, essays, many government documents and pamphlets, as well as photographs (see Photographic Collection), which depict Reservation life through the eyes of Public Health nurses, Native Americans, and government officials and includes a wealth of statistical material and government data.

This is a descriptive study of 348 new cases coming to the attention of the Mental Health team serving the Navajo Indian. Tribal affiliation, sex, marital status, age, type of schooling, religion, referral source, disposition, and primary diagnosis are presented and discussed.

The collection includes the personal and business papers of Sam Day, Sr. (1845-1925) surveyor, Indian trader, legislator and United States Indian Commissioner; Anna Day, Sam Sr.'s wife (1872-1932); and of their children, Charles L. Day (1879-1918), Samuel Day, Jr. (1889-1944), United States deputy Marshall. The collection includes information on Navajo culture, stories and legends; the looting of Canyon del Muerta, and the Frank Dugan murder.

Urban migration creates many adjustment problems for those American Indians who find economic opportunities on their reservations inadequate. Their extremely high rate of arrest in comparison with other urban groups, almost all for drunkenness or drinking‐related offenses, is testimony to the extent of their difficulties and the inadequate resources that they possess for coping with them. A systematic investigation of 259 male Navajo Indian migrants to Denver over the last ten years reveals a number of economic, social, and psychological pressures and constraints bearing on them, which account in large part both for intragroup differences in adjustment among them, and for their high arrest rates in comparison with other minority groups. The interaction among these determinants, as well as feedback from the migrant's behavioral response, is analyzed as a system of mutually interlocking and reinforcing variables through time. Practical implications of this study are briefly explored, including the apparent primary role played by the migrant's marginal economic position in the city.

The division of household labor and family functioning of mothers and fathers was examined in 28 off‐reservation Navajo Indian families. Mothers invested significantly more time in cleaning, food, and child‐related tasks than fathers, but mothers and fathers equally participated in household maintenance. In their perception of how they and their family functioned, mothers and fathers reported similar zzlevels of coping and competence, but mothers demonstrated significantly more commitment, cohesion, and communication skills than fathers. Overall, fathers showed high levels of involvement in household labor and family functioning. Findings are discussed with respect to family functioning and gender roles in 2‐parent Navajo families.
