Sectoral labor effects of North American free trade
The Caribbean in the face of the challenge of the regionalization of trade in North America ; El Caribe frente al reto de la regionalización del comercio en América del Norte
The process of world trade liberalization, the fruit of both political and economic changes, has encouraged trade between countries. International trade is used as a source of economic growth for developing countries. To promote commercial trade, new trade and economic integration agreements are established or improved; however, the impact of these agreements has distinct repercussions in different parts of the world. In light of the free trade agreement, for example, aspects which may be beneficial for Mexico are not necessarily positive for the small economies of the Caribbean that depend on the U.S. market for their exports. The consideration of the particularities of each country—and of their relationship with their environment—will help to broaden the possibility that all countries can benefit from free trade, if it is in the interest of promoting the economic and social well-being of all.

Argues that the changing nature of international relations changes the nature of sovereignty & how nations seek to protect their interests. When nations become intertwined in the web of transnational movements of capital, labor, goods, & technology, they give up aspects of their sovereignty, & are no longer in complete control of their economic destiny. This is true, however, for all countries in the web, & must be so in order to benefit from the new relations. This international involvement is achieved through treaties or pacts like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). It is argued that, with Mexico's entrance into the world of free trade, new safeguards are needed to minimize the impact on Mexico's internal political institutions & relations. 20 References. V. This article demonstrates that there are three distinct divisions in terms of individualism throughout the whole of North America. In the first division, the national level, there are two distinct groups; Canada & the US are more individualistic countries, while Mexico is less so. There are three groups in the second division -- the level of national cultures -- noted here in ascending order of individualism: Mexico, French-speaking Quebec, & English-speaking Canada & the US together. The third division encompasses the global level of cultures & indicates two groups: Anglo-Saxons (English-speaking Canadians & US citizens) & Latins (Mexicans & Quebeckers). The database analyzed for this research is the subsample for North America of the World Values survey, 1982-1983, analyzed combining binary logic, statistics applied to cross-tabulation tables, the theory of combinations, & multiple logistic regression. 4 Figures, 23 References.
