Explores the relationship between the irregularity of world capitalist development & processes of working-class formation before & during the crisis of capital in the 1980s-1990s. It is argued that the "North-South" divide is still the major impediment to the formation of a homogeneous world proletariat & the conditions of working-class formation remain dependent on the gap between the wealth, status, & power of a few Western countries, & those nations that hold most of the world's population. Key elements of the world labor movement during the 20th century are traced. It is argued that the crisis of labor was spawned by the shift of capital from investment in production & trade to finance & speculation. As in the past, the current financial expansion is linked to the polarization of wealth within & between countries. The danger that labor movements will side with the power of states to reinforce global inequalities & divisions between the world's workers, thereby increasing the possibility of a lengthy period of systemic chaos, is discussed.
