; In this autoethnographic work I relate how the late acquisition of a sign language allows a process of repair and re-appropriation of a CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) identity. This is a reflective research on a singular experience as the eldest daughter of deaf parents in order to highlight its complexities and link them with social, cultural and psychological concepts. In this particular process of telling one's story, I write in the first person by fusing the "subject" and "object" of the investigation. Each person creates the social and cultural reality while drawing inspiration from it to build his or her own identity. Thus, the deliberate choice of sign language reflects a will for vital transformation both at the personal and social level, it is a political action. The comic strips allow to illustrate the issues and represent the research in an accessible way in order to reach a certain degree of generalization.
In this article the Right to Development for Older Adults, where the implementation of the International Covenant on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights was established, and our national legislation, it is determined whether the state defends and protects the rights they should enjoy exposed older adults. You have to require different public and private institutions to respect the Comprehensive Protection Law Elderly and Retired, because in our country there is full respect for the principles established in international treaties. ; This article presents a conceptualization of the public policy related to the elders, in particular the policy related to social services, which are considered urgent measures in a context of inequality and erosion of the modern state due to the neoliberal model. The authors present the difficult situation senior citizens face, the importance of guarantying their rights to healthcare, descent housing, work, and so forth, and providing social services to them, which is concretized in the local public policy indicated in Bogota's Development Plan. The text intents to contribute to the conceptualization of the problem, so the public policy does not became a distraction sophism and the social services do not turn into a way to mitigate the effects of the neoliberal model. The purpose of the article is that those policies and services, together with local initiatives, guarantee the rights of the elder and contribute to refurnish the state in the context of savage neoliberalism.
Public strategies have been designed in different parts of the world in order to deal with the ageing of the population, repercussions which affect several areas such as individual health and the economies of countries. The type of strategy responds to the social security system of each country, to the cultural patterns of the populations and a determined definition of elderly age and quality of life. In Mexico, the procurement of social security and care in situations of physical or financial vulnerability has primarily been the responsibility of social and familiar networks; the design of public policies should consider these factors which entails attending to the crossings of biographies and events between several generations. This research focused on the narratives of older people in social vulnerability contexts where their thoughts about their life trajectories, the mechanisms used for their survival and their suggestions for governmental intervention in their current situation were collected. The results emphasize two aspects: the importance of exchange through mutual help networks, and work as the most treasured good in order to find a place in those networks as well as to keep control of their lives.
Background In 2007, a non contributory pension program was launched in rural areas of Mexico. The program consisted in a non conditional cash transfer of US$40 monthly to all older adults (OA) aged 70 over. We evaluate the effect of the program on mental well being of its beneficiaries. Methods Findings Quantitative qualitative methods were used. For the quantitative component, we used the selection criteria established by the program (age locality size) to form the Intervention (OA aged 70–74 residing in rural localities, <2500 inhabitants) Control groups (OA aged 70–74, in localities with 2501–2700 inhabitants). Baseline data collection was conducted in 2007 where 5,465 OA were interviewed. The follow up survey was conducted in 2008, it was possible to interview 5,270 OA, with a response rate of 96%. A difference in difference linear probability model with individual fixed effect was used to estimate the impact of the program on mental well being indicators. In 2009 a qualitative component was designed to explore possible causal pathways of such effect. Results After a year of exposure, the program had a significant effect on reduction of depressive symptoms (β = −0.06, CI95% −0.12; −0.01) an increase in empowerment indicators: OA participated in important household decisions (β = 0.09, CI95% 0.03;0.15); OA participated in household decisions pertaining to expenses (β = 0.11, CI95% 0.05;0.18). Qualitative analysis found a strong trend showing a reduction of sadness, feeling of increasing empowerment. Conclusions These results suggest that a non conditional transfer in older ages have an impact beyond the economic sphere, impacting even the mental well being. This effect could be explained because the pension produces feelings of safety welfare. It is recommendable that governments should invest efforts towards universalizing the non contributory pension programs in order to ensure a basic income for the elderly.
On March 14, 2020, the Spanish Government declared a state of alarm throughout the country in the face of the uncontrolled spread of COVID-19. The Spanish population was forced into strict confinement and, over time, the restrictions were gradually eased and the country started a new normality. For months, there were different measures to avoid face-to-face social interactions and infection. Certainly, the social group that suffered most from the pandemic and the restrictions imposed was the elderly. The research presents official quantitative data and interviews with people knowledgeable about the subject. Confinement and subsequent restrictions had an uneven impact; many older adults have suffered the consequences in loneliness and anonymity. There is still a lack of studies to know in-depth their experiences, opinions, reflections, and possible discomforts experienced during the pandemic.
Over time, the human being experiences a series of changes associated with the aging process, generating different transitions in biological, psychological and social aspects given by the progressive increase in the life expectancy of the population that influences family relationships. The purpose of this study was to characterize domestic violence from the type of abuse that affects mental health in older adults who receive care from the Ministry of economic and social inclusion through a cooperation agreement with the autonomous decentralized parish government of San Jacinto del Búa de the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. A non-experimental research with a cross-sectional descriptive design was carried out in a population of 40 older adults who underwent a sociodemographic survey, applying the geriatric scale of elder abuse and the general health questionnaire -12. The result of this work has yielded relevant data, predominantly in the age group of 71 to 80 years, especially the female sex, as the one that has suffered the most psychological, financial and negligence abuse from their relatives, affecting their mental health. Concluding that the mistreatment generated by domestic violence is related to the presence of psychopathological alterations in the mental health of older adults, disturbing them emotionally, which reflects the need to guarantee respect for their dignity and the exercise of their rights. This research aims to explore some methodological issues in the topic of savings in Mexico, considering the international context, and also to discuss relevant historical events and some cultural characteristics in Mexico, in order to achieve greater understanding of savings behavior and how these establish preference for present consumption, hurting people in their old ages. This study includes some methodological issues, the legal framework in the pension system in Mexico, and also savings' informal practices, finishing with directions of research. Vulnerable groups' wellbeing, such as the one related with elderly people, has taken relevance in recent literature. It has been identified that savings is an important part of people's wellbeing, particularly when old, because among other things, savings reduce uncertainty by smoothing consumption, and it might guarantee health access in countries where the government is still unable to provide services for the entire population. Objective: To assess the relationship of health locus of control with religious attitude and spirituality in older Mexican adults. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional correlational study in a sample of 101 older adults from government social assistance centers in Mexico. To evaluate the study variables, the Locus of Control in Health Scale, the Spirituality Index and the Religious Attitude Scale were used; in addition to a questionnaire for sociodemographic variables. Data collection was carried out by psychologists after signing the informed consent. Descriptive analyzes were carried out for the study variables and to evaluate the relationship between health locus of control with religious attitude and spirituality, two analyzes were carried out: a Pearson correlation and the odds ratio. Results: The correlation of health locus of control in its dimension powerful others has a low but statistically significant correlation with religious attitude (r = ,278, p <,01) and does not have a correlation with spirituality, thus, a high level of religious attitude makes it more likely that older adults have a powerful others health locus of control at a high level (Ψ = 2,71 1,154 – 6,394). Conclusion: Religious attitude at a high level does not favor the empowerment of health in Mexican older adults.
; Learning is an ongoing, permanent process that accompanies the human being throughout life. Venezuelan university education has the moral and legal commitment to assume the formal phase of this process, facing the challenges of a modern, complex and "aging" society. This context motivated the development of the present dissertation that addresses the philosophical-legal aspects of university education for the elderly in Venezuela. In this academic-university formation, the Venezuelan geronte, in which the pertinence of implementing a program of university gerontology education in the country, based on such aspects as: changes in demographic and socioeconomic indicators, cognitive reserve skills in the geronte and the universal right to education. The final reflections emphasize the need to consolidate a university education for life, reformed in values, open and democratic, adapted to the biopsychosocial reality of the elderly, allowing him to effectively and satisfactorily contribute to national development and The conception of this new "Being" Venezuelan. ; 149-183
This study aimed to identify job offers that consider people over 60 years of age to work in a context where the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) modified the social and economic behavior of society, cataloging adults elderly as a sector with high risk of illness and were socially and economically isolated. The study carried out during 2020 indicates that, of 750 vacancies offered in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, Mexico, only 17 considered the possibility of conducting a job interview with people with a maximum age of 60 years. The low probability of being hired and confined due to the pandemic creates economic vulnerability of older adults who depend on government support or family members to survive.
