Social Networks and Political Processes in Urban Neighborhoods
In: American journal of political science: AJPS, Band 22, Heft 3, S. 578-594
ISSN: 0092-5853
In a comparative case study of six Ur neighborhoods & their community organizations, interviews were conducted with all active members of the neighborhood associations & with random samples of community residents. Paradoxically, residents with close-knit neighborhood friendship ties were relatively unlikely to be informed about community associations, & their associations did a relatively poor job of representing their interests. Residents of close-knit neighborhoods, however, were more likely than others to exhibit a capacity for regulating their neighborhoods informally. It is concluded that as neighborhoods in modern cities become less village-like, the nature of their political capacities changes; but it is not necessarily true that their political capacities diminish. 5 Tables. Language Networks and Social Status among Mexican Americans
In: Social science quarterly, Band 65, Heft 2, S. 551-564
ISSN: 0038-4941
A survey of Mexican Americans (N = 194, administered a questionnaire via face-to-face interview) in El Paso, Tex, reveals that participation in Spanish-speaking networks lowers the expected level of SES, while higher status decreases the expected level of participation in Spanish-speaking networks. This reciprocal relationship is simultaneously a force of assimilation & of dissimilation. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 30 References. Modified HA.

Inter-Organizational Networks and Social Structures: Turkish Chambers of Industry
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Band 31, Heft 4, S. 646-660
ISSN: 0020-8701
Recognized is the need for an analytical link between research in interorganizational networks & problems in macrosociology & comparative sociology, in order to improve the theoretical foundation of organizational research. Present paradigms are inadequate because they focus too exclusively on organizational networks confronting an environment, rather than on societal structures that contain the networks. A model for joining interorganizational networks with social structures is proposed, which studies allocation & distribution of resources. Access to resources is assumed to be the motivating power prompting organizational linkages. The resource-distribution approach is demonstrated through research of industrialists' associations in Turkey, specifically eight chambers of industry that are province-wide agencies mediating between the State & Turkish industrialists.
