From the authors' perspective and value-based assumptions, neglect and abuse occur not out of malice or intent to harm but rather out of an inability to cope with the demands of children whose developmental needs overwhelm the coping resources of parental caregivers. In this article the authors develop a theoretical model that views caregivers who repeatedly maltreat their children as limited in providing appropriate parenting responses to their offspring because of psychosocial problems that pervade most sectors of their functioning. The proposed theoretical model targets 3 interacting dimensions of personality functioning (interpersonal relationship capacity, emotion regulation, and self-esteem maintenance). Implications for the development of assessment and intervention strategies and for empirical testing of the model are outlined.

The study compares 57 homosexuals and 45 lesbians on six dimensions of beliefs about human nature. On only one dimension, altruism – selfishness, was a significant difference found. While there are no similar studies of the comparison of attitudes and values, the findings are
consistent with the few personality studies which likewise reported no differences between homosexuals and lesbians.

THE CONCEPT OF AUTHORITARIANISM HAS GENERALLY BEEN CONSIDERED A PERSONALITY CONSTRUCT, ALTHOUGH ADORNO'S APPROACH WAS INSPIRED BY PREVIOUS WORK WITH AN IDEOLOGICAL FASCIST ANGLE. THESE TWO APPROACHES HAVE BEEN, TO AN APPRECIABLE EXTENT, MIXED IN LATER THINKING. THIS PAPER ENDEAVORS TO DISENTANGLE THEM BY CONSIDERING THE CLASSICAL ADORNO F-SCALE AS A PERSONALITY VARIABLE AND CONSTRUCTING AN IDEOLOGICAL LIBERTARIANISM-AUTHORITARIANISM DIMENSION, PARTLY VALIDATED BY ITS RELATIONSHIP TO A SHORTENED UNIDIMENSIONAL VERSION OF THE F-SCALE. THE PERSONALITY VARIABLE OF AUTHORITARIANISM IS SHOWN TO HAVE NO SUBSTANTIAL EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIP TO VOTING INTENTIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS. HOWEVER, THE IDEOLOGICAL MEASURE OF AUTHORITARIANISM IS RELATIVELY STRONGLY AND CONSISTENTLY ASSOCIATED WITH INTENDED VOTING BEHAVIOR. THIS STUDY ALSO CLARIFIES THE ONGOING DEBATE OVER THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AUTHORITARIANISM AND LEFT-RIGHT IDEOLOGY. THE WEAK RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MEASURES OF AUTHORITARIANISM AND LEFT-RIGHT IDEOLOGY SIGNIFY THE EXISTENCE OF LEFT-WING AUTHORITARIANISM IN THE DUTCH POPULATION.
