; Due to the political consensus on promoting renewable energy in the last years, numerous biogas plants were established. Like other sources of renewable energy, the production of biogas and its subsequent utilization in an engine to produce electricity poses several advantages. Apart from the use of particularly planted crops cultivated for the energy production, the so-called NAWAROS, also waste can be used. Therefore the use of waste is not only ecologically beneficial, but also economically reasonable. However the disposal of the digestion residuals is in many cases the crucial point. The most common utilization option is the use as a fertilizer in agriculture. The chemical and physical characteristics of digestate are often very similar to those of liquid manure. Thus the fertilizer value, especially nitrogen and phosphorus promotes this disposal option. Where the agricultural use is not possible other treatment options have to be considered. But these other options are neither well developed nor cheaper. Especially with waste driven biogas plants the economical disposal of the digestate determines the financial success of a project. The objective of this work was to investigate different treatment and utilization possibilities for digestate, and in consequence to evaluate different approaches in respect to their implementation for different AD projects. Four scientific papers are included that cover (a) enhanced ammonium removal from liquid anaerobic digestion residuals in an advanced SBR system (paper I); (b) air-sparging in crossflow membrane filtration (paper II); (c) influence of operational conditions on the performance of a mesh filter activated sludge process (paper III); and finally (d) the utilization of by-products and treatment of waste in the food industry (paper IV). Research results of this work are presented in detail in the papers and summed up in the enclosed abstract.
