"The Makassar annals Translated and edited by William Cummings. Beginning in the 1630s, a series of annalists at the main courts of Makassar began keeping records with dated entries that recorded a wide variety of specific historical information about a wide variety of topics, including the births and deaths of notable individuals, the actions of rulers, the spread of Islam, trade and diplomacy, the built environment, ritual activity, warfare, internal political struggles, social and kinship relations, eclipses and comets, and more. These Lontaraq bilang were a clear departure in form and function from the genealogically-structured chronicles being composed about the ruling families of Gowa and Talloq in the same era. By the end of 1751, nearly 2400 entries had been completed. These records are a rich lode of information for scholars interested in virtually any aspect of life in premodern Makassar, and are a rare and precious resource for scholars of Southeast Asia. This is the first English translation and annotation of the annals. William Cummings is an associate professor of history at the University of South Florida. He is the author of Making blood white; Historical transformation in early modern Makassar, A chain of kings; The Makassarese chronicles of Gowa and Talloq, and numerous articles about Makassarese history and culture"--Publisher's description

This essay analyzes the representation of transgenderism in Ricky Lee's Tagalog-language novel Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata (Amapola in 65 Chapters). By situating the novel against the heteronormative operations of the nation-state, the analysis investigates how Amapola's transformation from a politically apathetic comedy bar performer to an aswang (viscera-stucker) who is desrined to save the nation semantically radicalizes the image of transgenderism through the dynamics of revolutionary subjectification. This investigation then inserts Amapola's transgenderism into the Filipiino history - from the babaylan-led anti-colonial peasant movements during the Spanish and American colonial periods to the contemporary national democratic movement led by the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Abstract (English) There are many connotations and denotations to "youth," or "kabataan" in Tagalog. Until now, there is no single definition that can be used to refer to this particular demographic sector of society. Despite this fluidity of signification, the term "youth" had been used by differing political sides, especially during the Martial Law period. In this paper, this researcher will attempt to go back further in time to the Spanish period. Specifically, the researcher has scanned through the dictionaries that the Spanish friars, and even a Tagalog lexicographer, had compiled. Despite the Spanish dictionaries possession of a pansilang pananaw since these were written for the benefit of Spanish missionaries, these sources are still important primary sources on the concept of "youth" or "young age" during the Spanish period.
