The current debate on the Anthropocene is thus far dominated by the natural sciences. This leads to a simplistic analysis of environmental devastation and the underlying changes of human-nature relations. In this commentary, we urge the discipline of political science to enhance its engagement in the debate on the so-called human age and its far-reaching implications. The Anthropocene is characterized first and foremost by complex interactions, non-linear dynamics and tipping points that entail abrupt changes. Against this backdrop, it becomes clear that there can be no simple management of human impacts on the earth system in the Anthropocene. To explore the root causes and potential solutions of human-induced environmental problems, we need to raise questions on key topics, such as prevailing power relations, clashes of interests and norm conflicts. Political theory is moreover highly relevant to address the question of how the existing political institutions could be reformed in the Anthropocene. The discipline of political science plays hence a particular role in the Anthropocene debate. Yet, the Anthropocene should not only remain a critical topic for those political scientists concerned with the environment. Instead, what is needed is a political science contribution that reflects the entire breadth of the discipline to develop adequate response strategies for system-threatening global environmental changes in an interdisciplinary dialogue.
Political Correctness or Virtue Terror?Discussing the different meanings of the concept of political correctness, the author argues that it is a part of a profound change in culture within Western democracies that has led to a differentiation and deepening of human and fundamental rights. At the same time, it is shown that political correct-ness was adopted by the political right and used as a fight against this differentiation of human and fundamental rights in the Western liberal democracies, in order to defame them by linking the corre-sponding prohibitions of discrimination and equality measures with virtue terror.

Political Science has failed to predict the Arab Spring. The present article aims at using this insight in a productive way by identifying and critically discussing crucial research questions, particularly: Is the Arab Spring of epochal significance, what role do civil society and Islamism play, in what way is the Arab Spring connected with globalization, how to describe and explain the new political diversification of the Arab Middle East and what are the conditions for future political development of the region? The present article heavily relies on the transition paradigm and the rentier state approach: In parts of the Middle East, the Arab Spring has caused open-ended political change, which has been shaped to a high degree by rent income and institutional settings.
; The following essay is intended to contribute to the discussion about new orientations in political history going on in German historiography. Instead of opting for either traditional political history or new cultural history of 'the political', it is intended to show that a denser cooperation with political scientists might be a more proper approach to find new ways of talking about politics in history. The most successful theory of action in political science, the Rational Choice research program, is presented as a powerful theoretical foundation for talking about discourses, symbols and institutions; moreover, its use would enable historians to integrate insights from new institutional economics and political economy into historical research.
; This masters thesis aims to show that there are several prevalent expressions for food in Austria that need to be considered discriminatory. The thesis seeks to determine whether and why a renaming of these dishes is justified. It also aims to raise awareness of the problem of discriminatory names, and to trace current opinions of this issue in Austria. The first chapter deals with the general issue of political correctness, explaining the origins of the concept and presenting an account of the opinions of its supporters and critics. The second chapter focuses on political correctness in connection with the naming of food. It demonstrates that dishes named after their method of preparation, ingredients, origins, inventors, or which honour a person or event are hardly found offensive. Names that reference aspects of nationality, ethnicity and human appearance, on the other hand, cannot be considered politically correct. In order to better understand why certain food names are being criticized, and to argue that terms such as 'Mohr, 'Neger, 'Zigeuner and 'Indianer should be rejected, these terms will be contextualized and explained. Analysing the comment section of online newspaper articles, the following chapter assembles different opinions concerning the renaming of Austrian dishes. It summarizes the main arguments in the comments, most of which are against or critical about a renaming, and attempts to refute them. Although the changing of problematic terms for food alone is certainly not enough to fight discrimination, it is a first step and can raise awareness. However, the renaming should not be enforced by law, but be decided upon by representatives of the gastronomy and food industries in cooperation with NGOs that are concerned with discrimination. Together, they can devise a consistent plan, as well as formulate guidelines which explain the problem of discriminatory names and provide support and counsel.
; Arendt develops her political theory in a society, in which individual thinking and collective acting was not possible. Therefore, the theory focuses on the capability of spontaneity, on the condition of pluralism, and produces the power of judgment as a political ability. The dissertation reconstructs Arendts theory, taking into consideration the break in tradition since the beginning of modern sciences. The critical analysis of the latter signify a new beginning in the political and pose new questions on the self-creation of democratic societies under various conditions.

This dissertation investigates the overarching research question of the relationship between politics and PDM. Given that public budgets ultimately collateralize the associated risks involved in actively managing public debt and using innovative financial instruments, the relationship between politics and modern PDM is of major relevance for legitimacy in democratic capitalism. As debt instrument selection is a crucial and strategic aspect of PDM to optimize debt portfolios, chapter 2 examines the question which economic and political factors have an impact on the use and extent of short-term debt instruments on the municipal level. Finding that the municipalities' budgetary situation represents the key determining factor of their share of short-term debt, the results demonstrate the need for different approaches to grasp the phenomenon of PDM and ultimately raises the questions of whether or not politicians have influence on PDM at all. Consequently, chapter 3 investigates the institutional setting of DMOs on the national level by analyzing the relationship between DMOs and their respective parent ministry. The analysis focusses on the variation of autonomy across countries resulting out of this delegation process. The finding that DMOs have substantial autonomy in decision-making competencies, while especially DMOs separated from the core administration are subject of relatively low reporting obligations, naturally raises doubts concerning political control. Chapter 4 consequently addresses the question whether PDM is subject of parliamentary control. The results show that parliaments have relatively low control of PDM, which indicates a trade-off between expertise and control. Moreover, this chapter underlines the necessity to differentiate between budget and debt policy and subsequently between debt level and debt structure.
