A review essay on books by (1) James H. Kulinski (Ed), Citizens and Politics: Perspectives from Political Psychology (Cambridge: Cambridge U Press, 2001); & (2) George E. Marcus, W. Russel Neumann & Michael MacKuen, Affective Intelligence and Political Judgement (Chicago: U Chicago Press, 2000). These recent works raise some of the major current problems & hypotheses relating to political psychology, cognitive sciences, & public opinion research. In particular, attention is paid to the controversy opposing the "combinatorial" perspective of Paul Sniderman et al to the "constructionist" approach of John Zaller on opinion formation & change. We argue that Zaller's accent on situational frames & Sniderman's emphasis on the underlying political dispositions are much more complementary than mutually exclusive. Therefore, it seems difficult to deny in toto the plausibuity of the "ambivalence" hypothesis, especially with regard to specific low-involvement segments of citizens & to various new, nonobtrusive, & not yet crystallized, political issues. 14 References. The author offers personal insight on Italian philosopher, Norberto Bobbio. He narrates his personal relationship with Bobbio, trying to describe the professor from a different perspective than those already offered by popular bibliographies & mainstream publications. The main focus is the important contribution that Bobbio offered in the political science arena. Tracing his biography & work from his contributions to juridical positivism, all the way to his public commitment as senator, the author offers an intimate relation of Bobbio's ideals & accomplishments as he shaped Italian political science, integrating it with philosophical elements. If the US has been behind Western European countries in the field of pol'al sci, it is probably because the American scene has been less favorable for the development of Machiavellian interpretation of pol'al phenomena. To cite a distinction drawn by Mosca, American researchers have had a better understanding of the sci of gov than of the art of gov. This inadequacy helps to explain a certain backwardness in the study of pol'al ecology: thus the Tableau Politique de la France de l'Ouest, of A. Siegfried did not receive the attention in the US that it deserved. On the other hand, a sociol of elites & of bur'cy has developed in the wake of Michels. Also the study of international relations has been a stimulus to progress recently in pol'al sociol. The autonomy of admin'tive sci is also recent. In this connection, US pol'al concepts as well as pol'al practices tend toward the exclusion of all pol'al influence & toward the study of admin as a whole which is self explanatory. It is only since the end of WWII that public administration has been studied within the vaster complex of soc & pol'al forces. Actual studies are being conducted on a large scale which includes even soc psychol & anthrop. Tr by J. A. Broussard from IPSA.
