Without denying the importance of economies, the author underlines the necessity of analyzing the significance of Asia-Pacific as a political entity. The member States of the economics-oriented international organizations use the economic image of the region to gain political leverage at a regional or global level. This leads to an interrogation on the reality of « Asia-Pacific as a coherent political entity. The international relations in this area of the world also show an original pattern, insofar as the leadership of the « great powers » is questioned by « middle-sized » powers. The dialogue on collective security began recently and is a long way from achieving peace and stability in the region. It nevertheless shows the willingness of the Asia-Pacific States to overcome the difficulties of the post Cold War new world order

"This interdisciplinary edited collection features historians, anthropologists, artists, and activists who explore a transpacific understanding of the legacies of the testing and use of nuclear weapons. Instead of limiting the focus of the nuclear humanities to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these essays take readers from the New Mexican desert, to the islands of the Pacific Ocean, to small fishing villages on the island of Shikoku in Japan. They bring together different times and places as well as art historical analysis and academic essays. Focusing on themes of resistance, this collection illustrates the varied methods artists and activists can use to combat nuclear regimes through their aesthetic and political work. By putting activists and artists together, it demonstrates the overlaps and linkages between them as well as the different ways political and artistic expression can respond to nuclear threats and effect change. Through the personal testimonies of hibakushas, lawsuits filed to demand compensation for the medical treatment of affected fisherman, community education programs that raise historical awareness, and artistic projects that provide social commentary, this volume illustrates that nuclear resistance can come in many forms"--

Home in the Islands addresses changes in housing in the Pacific, considers how these changes came about, and explores their consequences. Architecture intersects with critical anthropology and geography as contributors examine how social, political, religious, economic, demographic, and environmental influences coverage in the nexus of housing. Building on recent interdisciplinary literature, the essays explore the meanings that are spatially negotiated as Pacific Islanders build and dwell in places that have always been home, are homes away from home, and are homelands without homes. Although detailed written and photographic documentation is not available for most case studies of housing in the Pacific, the stories are there for those who learn to read the evidence. They draw attention to colonial and missionary agendas, local and global economies, environmental disasters, cultural identities, social connections, and family continuity, as well as personal choices. And, as the chapter on homeless Hawaiians shows, even those without houses have stories to tell. Anthropologists, architects, environmental designers, geographers, and historians will welcome this diverse volume on a neglected yet important aspect of change in the lives of Pacific Islanders.
