L'article traite des cinq seules peintures connues de I Madé Matjong, un peintre balinais de la fin de l'époque coloniale, sur lequel on sait assez peu de choses. Il vécut dans le village de Pangkung Karung, près de la petite ville de Kerambitan, ce qui explique que deux de ses peintures soient conservées dans les deux principaux palais de cette ville: le Puri Agung et le Puri Anyar. L'auteur analyse lesdites peintures ainsi que leurs sources d'inspiration, à savoir: le Arjunawijaya, le Ramayana et le Malat, et les replace dans le contexte de la peinture balinaise traditionnelle.

Deux grandes peintures balinaises traditionnelles sont décrites, que le Wereldmuseum de Rotterdam reçut en 1928 d'un legs de G.P. Rouffaer. Leur provenance, ainsi que leur style très particulier, que partage un grand nombre de peintures de la collection Van der Tuuk, permettent d'en attribuer la facture à I Ketut Gedé de Singaraja, dans le nord de Bali. Cet artiste produisit de nombreuses peintures pour H.N. van der Tuuk dans les années 1880 et 1890 et reçut également, après 1905, des commandes de W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, qui le tenait pour le meilleur peintre classique de son temps.

International audience ; Consacré à l'étude des sources institutionnelles du droit sabaudo-sarde ce dernier chapitre de l'ouvrage collectif "Le Sénat de Savoie : archives, historiographies, perspectives XVIe-XIXe siècles" (sous la direction de Françoise Briegel et et Sylvain Milbach), s'efforce de retracer la lente construction au sein du Duché de Savoie d'un corpus normatif spécifique dans la vaste aire européenne méridionale du droit dit "écrit" — droit sabaudo-piémontais, puis sabaudo-sarde — dont la loi du prince commune à toutes les provinces continentales des Etats de Savoie représente la norme suprême, à l'amont d'une loi romaine adaptée localement par la jurisprudence du Sénat de Savoie devenue, depuis la fin de Moyen-Age, la base du droit commun ordinaire au sein de ce même complexe politique transalpin. Tandis que jusqu'à la promulgation du Code Civil de 1837 et la consécration définitive d'un système législatif unitaire de type napoléonien, le champ d'application de coutumes locales ancestrales pourtant revendiquées dans chaque localité par des justiciables unanimes, au titre de privilèges provinciaux ancestraux, ne cesse en réalité de se réduire inexorablement tout au long des Temps Modernes. Au delà de l'érudition gratuite le rappel de la genèse de ce système normatif désormais évanoui permet en effet l'évocation de l'un des éléments majeurs du patrimoine historique savoyard.

Heroines from Greek Tragedy deserve a special status in the figured world of the Darius Painter. Medea and Creusa (Ion's mother), for instance, are granted real "epiphanies" by the Apulian céramographe. Why? And what links together two apparently so different heroines? The A. proceeds to a critical re-examination of some well-known iconographies, stressing the importance of some often neglected details, the interpretation of which is fundamental. The Darius Painter conceives the links between his heroines on the ground of his knowledge of the Athenian Authors of Tragedies of the Vth century B. C., particularly of Euripides. How and why, now, the problems faced by Medea and Creusa, influenced by the political and social context of classical Athens might concern the Apulian artist's public, composed with Italiotes (mainly citizens from Taranto) and non-Greek people (mainly communities from Daunia or Peucetia)? The A. outlines what might give an answer to the question and explain the intent of the Darius Painter when he transposes and re-actualizes Athenian debates of the Vth century in the political, geo-political and social context of Magna Graecia in the IV century B.C. ; Les héroïnes de tragédies ont un statut spécial dans le monde figuré du Peintre de Darius. C'est le cas de Médée et de Créuse (mère d'Ion) auxquelles le céramographe apulien réserve de véritables « épiphanies ». Pour quels motifs et quel est le lien entre deux héroïnes apparemment bien différentes ?L' A. procède à un réexamen critique d'iconographies célèbres, valorisant certains détails, souvent négligés, dont la compréhension est essentielle.Le P. de Darius conçoit le lien entre ses héroïnes à travers sa connaissance des auteurs tragiques athéniens du Ve siècle, principalement d'Euripide. Or, comment et pourquoi les problèmes affrontés par Médée et Créuse, reflétant le contexte politique et social de l'Athènes classique, sont-ils susceptibles d'intéresser le public de l'artiste apulien, formé de citoyens de poleis italiotes (notamment Tarente) ou par des représentants de communautés non grecques (notamment dauniennes ou peucétiennes) ?L'A. esquisse aussi une réponse à ces questions en examinant les motifs guidant le Peintre de Darius lorsqu'il transpose et réactualise les débats de la polis athénienne du Ve siècle dans le contexte politique, géo-politique et social de la Grande Grèce du IVe siècle.

International audience ; In September 1728, the Scottish portrait painter John Smibert boarded a ship bound for North America. With John James, Richard Dalton and Thomas Moffat, Smibert had accepted to accompany George Berkeley in order to take part in his project to establish a college in the British colony of Bermuda. This institution was to be set up to train missionaries in charge of propagating the Anglican faith among the native population. In 1725, Berkeley had already exposed his plan in his pamphlet entitled A Proposal for the better supplying of churches in our foreign plantations, and for converting the Savage Americans to Christianity by a college to be erected in the Summer Islands, otherwise called the Isles of Bermuda. However, it was not before 1728 that Berkeley was able to leave Great Britain for the British colonies, after having obtained a promise for a grant of £20,000 from the Parliament and found teachers for his future college. Smibert had been chosen to teach the fine arts.Berkeley never got the grant from the British Parliament and in 1731 he decided to return to Great Britain. As for Smibert, he settled permanently in Boston where he worked as a portraitist. Of this aborted project there remain several paintings executed by Smibert, the most famous being the portrait known as The Bermuda Group, which represents Berkeley with his family and the men who had accepted to accompany him to the British colonies.This article aims at assessing the role of Smibert in Berkeley's project as well as Smibert's influence on the eighteenth-century pictorial art of the British colonies of North America. Nowadays, art historians still consider that Smibert contributed to the development of American painting. De ce projet avorté il reste plusieurs tableaux peints par Smibert, dont le célèbre portrait connu sous le nom de Bermuda Group, représentant Berkeley en compagnie de sa famille et des hommes ayant accepté de le suivre dans les colonies britanniques.Cet article se propose de revenir sur le projet de Berkeley ; nous nous intéresserons plus précisément au rôle de Smibert au sein de cette entreprise et à l'influence qu'il exerça sur l'art pictural dans les colonies britanniques d'Amérique du Nord au dix-huitième siècle. Aujourd'hui encore les historiens de l'art estiment que Smibert a contribué au développement de la peinture américaine. L'étude de quelques tableaux nous permettra de constater que, par l'intermédiaire de Smibert, la peinture écossaise marqua profondément plusieurs peintres américains de la seconde moitié du dix-huitième siècle.
