Imran Khan could have settled for the carefree, idle life of an international jet-setter. Although his glorious sporting career made him rich and famous (he captained the Pakistani cricket team in the 1980s and cricket is the king of sports in Pakistan), he nevertheless chose to put his wealth and popularity to work for his fellow citizens, first by involving himself in various works of philanthropy and then, in 1996, by entering politics as the leader of a party specially founded for the purpose, the Movement for Justice. A fringe party to begin with, it has gone from strength to strength over the years and is now a credible alternative to the two main forces on the Pakistani political stage, the Pakistan People's Party and the Pakistan Muslim League. In this exclusive interview, Mr. Khan, who might well spring a surprise in the general election of early 2013, describes his agenda with strength and conviction. One thing is certain: the former star athlete is a force to be reckoned with. Adapted from the source document.

Regional Challenges around Pakistan, by Isabelle Cordonnier
There are several regional challenges around Pakistan closely dépendent on domestic conditions. Through Pakistan's bilateral relations with two of its main neighbours - India and Afghanistan -, two major challenges appear: the nature or regional power in Southern Asia, and the settlement of territorial conflicts inherited from colonisation. The stability of the Indo-Pakistani relation is a critical challenge, not only at a regional level, but also at a global one. Because both countries have an open nuclear capacity and ballistic arsenals reaching the other's territory, South Asia emerges as the region where the nuclear and ballistic capacity to prevent the escalation of conflicts to the extremes is actually tested.
