On surface, Nigeria and Mali share fairly similar territorial configurations and historical trajectories. Recurring rebellions supported by mainly nomadic groups raise the question of relations between the centre and peripheries in these states. The purpose of this study is to analyse how these states try "peacemaking", in the absence of "peacebuilding", resulting in short-term hybrid arrangements that are cobbled together. The study integrates ways to make peace and wage war within a common analytical context.

National audience The reference to the involvement of North American mennonist and evangelical groups in peace building in southern countries makes it possible to nuance the apparent obvious commitment to peace-building. It is for different reasons, such as the activism for peace, the group's defence, the exploration of a theological corpus or the creation of professional opportunities for the group elite, that the groups have come to specialise in peace work 'from the bottom', seeking to develop dialogue between 'ordinary people'. The techniques they have developed in turn have the scope of a policy of pacification that puts the individual as the main driver of change and promotes informal ways of conflict resolution. ; Spiritual peace makers Notes on anabaptist and evangelical groups in America The distinctive way Mennonites and certain evangelical groups have involved themselves in peacemaking in countries of the southern hemisphere enables us to specify the character of what may seem their predictable involvement in peace making processes. The reason why these groups have became specialised in peacemaking "from below", through establishing dialogue between "ordinary people", are varied, ranging from peace activism, group maintenance, theological exploration, and creating jobs for elite members. Thus Mennonites and evangelicals have developed techniques of peacemaking that value informal conflict resolution and view the individual as the source of social change. ; National audience The reference to the involvement of North American mennonist and evangelical groups in peace building in southern countries makes it possible to nuance the apparent obvious commitment to peace-building. Peace-building between Palestinians and Israelis has failed so far because of dis-synergetic international efforts as focus has shifted away from the political issues laying at the heart of the conflict to "security issues". Building conceptually on "human security" approaches, this article will contend that no sustainable peace is possible if political "root causes" are not addressed and if "security" is only attached to Israelis.
