Das Buch nähert sich dem Zeitalter der hellenistischen Imperien durch eine Regionalstudie zur Herrschaft der Dynastie der Ptolemäer, deren Imperium sich in seinen Glanzzeiten im 3. Jh. v. Chr. auf weite Teile des östlichen Mittelmeers erstreckte. Exemplarisch erforscht es den ptolemäischen Imperialismus damit von seinen Rändern her, indem das periphere Gebiet Syrien-Palästinas in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Es war traditionelles Verbindungstor zwischen der mediterranen, asiatischen und nordafrikanischen Welt, Schauplatz einer Reihe von Kriegen und ein stets umstrittener imperialer Raum in direkter Nachbarschaft zum Seleukidenreich. Die Studie entwirft ein dichtes Bild der ptolemäischen Herrschaft, das die tragende Rolle und den prägenden Einfluss lokaler Eliten auf imperiale Praktiken ebenso diskutiert wie die Wechselwirkungen zwischen lokaler und zentraler Ebene und die Verflechtung des ptolemäischen Imperialismus in einem hochkompetitiven Umfeld konkurrierender Reichsbildungen
