Recent readings of Hegel by significant American philosophers have insisted on the link between recognition & rationality. In these readings, autonomy is defined as the capacity to give the reasons behind one's actions. This paper takes a critical distance towards these Kantian interpretations & returns to earlier German readings of Hegel, culminating in Axel Honneth's ethics of recognition, which placed stronger emphasis on the genetic dimension of recognition. The paper argues that this shift in perspective allows us to take recognition in a more substantive sense & make fuller use of the concept's critical potential. In particular, it allows us to use recognition as a diagnostic tool to identify more precisely the social & cultural obstacles to the realization of autonomy. Adapted from the source document.

De récentes lectures de Hegel par d'importants philosophes américains ont insisté avant tout sur le lien entre reconnaissance et rationalité, et défini l'autonomie comme capacité à donner les raisons de ses actions. Prenant une distance critique envers ces lectures d'inspiration kantienne, l'article s'inspire de lectures allemandes de Hegel, culminant dans l'éthique de la reconnaissance d'Axel Honneth, qui insistent davantage sur la dimension génétique de la reconnaissance. Un tel changement de perspective permet de prendre la reconnaissance en un sens plus roboratif et d'affiner son potentiel critique, notamment d'identifier de manière plus précise les obstacles sociaux et culturels à la réalisation de l'autonomie.

En quoi consiste le présent renouveau de la philosophie politique ? Il faudrait distinguer entre un banal retour à ce qui est perçu comme une discipline académique et un retour des « choses politiques ». Pour penser le retour des choses politiques, une interrogation s'impose sur les rapports entre la théorie critique (Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse) et la philosophie politique. Si la théorie critique tend au catastrophisme, c'est-à-dire à une association entre la domination et la politique, la philosophie politique, à l'inverse, tend parfois à effacer le phénomène de la domination au profit d'un espace politique conçu sur le modèle d'un échange entre participants égaux. Une philosophie politique critique devrait tenir compte, à la suite de La Boétie, notamment de ce que la domination tend à naître au sein du politique.

What is the meaning of the return of political philosophy? One must distinguish between what is merely a return to an academic discipline & a return of political matters. To have a correct idea of what is at stake in the return of political matters, one may question the relationship between critical theory (Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse) & political philosophy. If critical theory tends toward catastrophism, ie, to equate politics & domination, political philosophy, on the contrary, tends to forget domination, ie, to conceive politics as a space inhabited by citizens who equally participate in political exchanges. Nous étudions la volonté d'un certain nombre d'auteurs, au premier rang desquels H. Varian dans les années 1970, d'inscrire une théorie de la justice dans le cadre standard de la théorie de l'équilibre général dans la version canonique qu'en propose Pareto. Nous montrons, via une incursion dans les travaux de certains socialistes de marché des années 1930, que tout l'édifice normatif de la théorie parétienne repose sur le jugement de valeur dit de la souveraineté du consommateur, ce qui nous permet de mettre en relief et de discuter la contribution originale de Varian qui introduit le critère d'équité comme absence d'envie, parvenant ainsi à inscrire une théorie de la justice – très particulière – au cœur du modèle orthodoxe, qui respecte, autant que possible, ce jugement de valeur. Les querelles entre sociologie et philosophie politique ne sont pas infondées mais elles ont souvent entravé la productivité de chacun de ces deux registres de connaissance. En partant de ce postulat, cette note de lecture examine cinq récentes contributions épistémologiques qui ont tenté, chacune à leur manière, d'articuler l'approche sociologique et la philosophie politique : science sociale philosophique (Frédéric Lordon), science sociale générale (Philippe Chanial), analyse grammaticale de l'action (Cyril Lemieux), philosophie sociale (Franck Fischbach) et dialogues transfrontaliers (Philippe Corcuff).

The social sciences and philosophy.
By taking philosophy and its history as its object, sociology can make a contribution to the efforts of philosophy to free itself from the constraints which determine it. Philosophy tends to resolve the antinomy of historicity and truth by updating past works through commentary. This presupposes a more or less total denial of historicity. This refusal is common to the three ways of explicitly dealing with this antinomy : revelation of the primal revelation (Heidegger), retrospective construction of past philosophies as theoretical possibles (Kant), and the dialectic which transcends and conserves (Hegel). A genuine social history which would relocate philosophy in the field of cultural production and in the social field as a whole would make it possible to understand philosophies and their succession as something other than the «philosophizing philosophy of history» and would at the same time enable present-day philosophers to break free of the established «un-thought» written into their heritage.
