Que les Anglais, même philosophes, ne soient pas les Français, c'est une vérité qu'il ne faut pas sous-estimer. On vient de traduire chez Gallimard et d'installer dans la « Bibliothèque des Idées » de la maison une Histoire de la philosophie occidentale en relation avec les événements politiques et sociaux de l'Antiquité jusqu'à nos jours (ouf !), fort convenablement traduite par Hélène Kern de l'anglais de Bertrand Russell. — Ce nom n'est pas négligeable. Les échos du prix Nobel, en 1950, l'ont fait retentir de par le monde. On l'accueille donc avec un préjugé de sympathie, Mais quelle déconvenue !…« En relation avec les événements politiques et sociaux »…. Hélas ! Si le titre ne portait pas cette annonce prestigieuse, je reprocherais d'abord à l'ouvrage de n'être qu'une suite d'études sur la pensée de quelques philosophes arbitrairement choisis comme « techniquement qualifiés » et considérés, en dépit de quelques clauses de style, comme de purs esprits enclos dans leurs cabinets de travail.
