The essay corrects the somewhat distorted view of Kurt Eisner's personality which, to some extent, is based on bias. The article shows that Eisner's ideas and actions albeit idealistic were not unrealistic. Results of recent research reveal that the unsigned cover essays in "Vorwärts" (1899-1905) and in the "Fränkische Tagespost" (1907-1910) were written by Eisner. Also, the evaluation of other heretofore unknown writings show Eisner's influence on the socialist movement. Thus, by 1918/19 when Eisner became Bavarian head of government, his political concept was already formed. Recognizing capitalism's inherently destructive potential early on, Eisner, whose justification of socialism was primarily based on ethics, tried to find a third way between capitalism and communism. What becomes obvious is that Eisner overestimated the readiness of people to follow his sophisticated and complex middle position. (Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte / FUB)
