Based on a variety of Chinese material about love and marriage this article focuses on women's role in family and business. It deals with the specific problems women encounter in finding a way to combine two tasks, being wife and mother as well as working member of society. In traditional Chinese thinking the female is associated with weakness, passiveness and acting in the interior. Because of this evaluation genuine Chinese gender and women studies start only in the second half of our century, being influenced by Western, especially American standards. Their most prominent advocate is Li Xiaojiang, a scientist fighting for the extension of women studies embracing history, economy, politics, philosophy and psychology. Today the achievements of communism, liberation from the restricted role that women had, are again endangered by the drift of the Chinese economy to free entreprise.

; The subject of this dissertation is the development of Tengchong (former Tengyue) in the western border area of Yunnan province into a regular unit of the chinese regional administration. The history of Tengchong shows the continuing efforts of the chinese governments to establish the political, social, and cultural structures of the core region in the periphery of the empire and to shape the border area according to them. After a city-wall was built in the middle of the 15th century, the Han-chinese population of Tengchong rose quickly. With the construction of administrative buildings, schools, temples etc. on the model of the core region, the "first town at the far frontier" evolved and consequently became the centre of a sub-prefecture of the regular civil administration. The frame was thus set for the Han-chinese population to easily accomodate themselves within these established administrative and social structures and Tengchong was firmly connected with Chinas core region. This process of integration is discussed in this study under the topics of regional administration, construction, confucian schools, trade and official relations to the Shan-States and Burma, covering the period from Chinas early connections with Western Yunnan during the Han Dynasty until the end of the 19th century, focusing on the development during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Chinese frontier politics in Western Yunnan concentrated on the protection of the sub-prefecture of Tengchong. Despite nominal declarations of suzerainty, the chinese empire has since the end of the 16th century drawn a clear dividing line between its actual sphere of influence and the areas beyond under governance by the Shan or the Burmese. Thus an elaborate system of spheres of control was maintained, which finally turned into the modern administrative units and todays linear frontier. One important aspect of the relations between China and its neighbours in the region is discussed in the 2nd part of the dissertation. In a case study the problem of oral and written communication between China and the states of the Shan and Burma is discussed and an analysis of the bilingual (Chinese-Shan; Chinese-Burmese) lists of words from the local gazetteers of Tengchong is given. With the analysis of the historical development of Tengchong and the surrounding border area this study wants to contribute to a better understanding of the continuing process of integration of Western Yunnan into the chinese core region.

; Zhao Tingyang is one of the most influential thinkers of contemporary Chinese philosophy. In his work, he revisits the classical idea of Tianxia ("all under heaven"). In it, Zhao proposes a change of perspective, according to which the world is to be seen as a radically integrated whole. The following book discussion takes up Zhaos thought-provoking proposal. Philippe Brunozzi and Henning Hahn will begin by elaborating the books basic ideas. Zhao conceives of the world itself as a political subject, contrasts the Western conception of rationality with the notion of a relational rationality and designs a global order beyond. This is followed by critical commentaries by Stefan Gosepath, Walter Pfannkuche, Luise Müller, Christian Neuhäuser, Hans Feger and Robin Celikates, to which Zhao Tingyang finally responds. ; (VLID)5236594

In Taiwan, the Confucian revival was always defined by the search for a synthesis between Western and traditional Confucian thought. Taiwanese Modern Confucians aimed to create a system of ideas and values capable of resolving modern, globalised societies' social and political problems. Mou Zongsan, the best-known member of the second generation of Modern New Confucianism, aimed to revive the Chinese philosophical tradition through a dialogue with Modern European philosophy, especially with the works of Immanuel Kant. His follower Lee Ming-huei is arguably the most renowned expert on Kantian philosophy in the entire Sinitic region. The present paper aims to compare their respective approaches and evaluate them in a broader context of modern Chinese thought. I will first introduce Mou Zongsan's elaborations on Kant. In the following, I will present the main aspects of Lee Ming-huei's development of Mou's theories and provide in later sections a critical assessment of Lee's philosophical innovation, focusing upon the evaluation of his conceptualisation of immanent transcendence and Confucian deontology. Zongsan Mou, najpoznatiji član druge generacije suvremenog novog konfucijanizma, smjerao je oživjeti kinesku filozofijsku tradiciju kroz dijalog s modernom europskom filozofijom, naročito s radovima Immanuela Kanta.

In 2004 China has adopted a new provision on the constitutional protection of property, followed by several implementing laws and regulations. From this and from a stated increasing development of capitalist structures and corresponding legislative activity one may infer that China endorses the principle of rule of law. Yet, how does "China" perceive these notions of rule of law and protection of property? In this dissertation, the author addresses these issues by comparing the distinct Chinese and German legal regimes of property. He emphasises the significance of cultural contexts and underlying socio-political structures that coin the property system and legal thinking of an entity by elucidating the respective historical underpinnings as well as aspects of legal philosophy and constitutional doctrine. The author goes beyond a mere legal comparison and assessment of the status quo, in that he evaluates whether specific notions of the German constitution may pave the way for a sound development of Chinese property law.
In February 2007 Helmut Schmidt, the former German Chancellor, received an honorary doctorate at Marburg University. To mark the occasion he gave a lecture entitled "The Responsibility and Conscience of the Politician" in which he emphasized the importance of a system of morals and values based only on rational insights, and not on religious faith. Schmidt argues that Confucianism is a kind of philosophy which is grounded, not in religion, but in rational deliberations, and that it is therefore nowadays of high interest in a world of growing religious conflicts. The present article shows that this reception of Confucianism has a long tradition in the European, and especially the German history of philosophy. It started with Mateo Ricci, a Jesuit missionary to China at the end of the 16 th century, and reached its peak during the early Enlightenment movement with Leibniz and Wolf. After a long period of decreasing interest in Confucianism, the formation of the science of religions, sinology and sociology as academic disciplines led to a new interest in research on Confucianism and its religious roots. Max Weber's studies on Daoism and Confucianism were more sophisticated, and open to the complexity of Chinese traditions. Schmidt's interpretation of Confucianism as a practical philosophy represents a tradition which has not come to its end. It is the critical view of religions in general which lies behind the image of Confucianism as a rational philosophy without any religious basis, and taken in this way, it is a very Eurocentric view of an important Asian tradition.

The public culture of the receiving society and the dominant understanding of belonging and political membership can influence the social participation of immigrants as much as immigration law. However, current discussions of integration focus primarily on the distribution of rights and neglect the role of tacit knowledge. Through a systematical and philosophical analysis of identity's role in policy-making, governance and social practice, Bodi Wang shows how a one-sided understanding of integration resembles »assimilation« and why integration should be expected from locals as well. Weaving together extensive findings in sociology, history, critical race theory and Chinese philosophy with ethics and migration studies, this book provides a compelling argument for adopting the concept of »mutual integration« to overcome injustice and to enhance social solidarity.
; The whole world is talking about China. On the one hand, there is a great deal of admiration for the country's speedy economic growth and participation in economic globalisation. On the other hand, China is often criticized for its abuses of human rights and simple freedoms, like the freedom of speech and freedom of the press. But the western philosophy that trade will lead to change for the better (which implies that increasing prosperity will lead to concrete democratic political reforms) has yet to be proven true. Hiding behind the curtain of censorship-controlled printed media, radio, TV and especially internet are a number of profit crazed international companies. Private US companies use their technical knowhow to create programs for mass censorship, which are then sold to the Chinese government. Elites in the Chinese IT world employ these programs in the vast infrastructure of censorship. Administrative structures and responsibilities are allocated based on encompassing in--depth knowledge of and cooperation with the media. Though Chinese mass media are subject to strict regulations, the growing media sector is profiting greatly from China's sweeping economic boom. Government controlled media are expanding and setting up shop around the world on assignments from Beijing to polish up China's image. Though a number of Chinese endeavours to make financial investments in renowned foreign media companies have fallen through, Chinese companies have now become owners of a handful of radio and TV stations outside of China. Foreign journalistic stories are filtered out at China's borders and do not reach the public. The government and the party control the masses by manipulating the information available to them. Chinese citizens who wish to be informed have realized this and rely on independent information from foreign countries to deliver objective, unbiased and unfiltered stories.

This study is based primarily on information obtained by the author in interviews with Chinese scientists and science administrators, but also on some material recently published in specialised Chinese joumals on research and technology management and on the history, philosophy and sociology of science. In the first section it shows that inside China conflicting views of the relationship between science, politics and the economy exist. Politicians argue for a subordination of all research to the aims of central economic planning. Scientists, on the other hand, plead for greater autonomy of research institutes and of individual scientists and complain about excessive interference with their work. The paper then goes on to examine the actual performance and role of the leading organ in Chinese science and technology policy, the "State Science and Technology Commission". The organisational structure of scientific research and the decision-making processes on the provincial level are then analysed. Finally, a few instances of actual research are presented, concentrating on the development and problems of biological research in the southern province of Yunnan. One of the conclusions drawn from the material is that the organisation of scientific research in China today is structured in a way which, instead of facilitating central control and direction of research, tends to prevent it. This is due primarily to two facts: firstly, the state organs responsible for coordination and planning do not dispose of the necessary basic data and information, and secondly, they are powerless to impose their strategic aims on other institutions or to effectively control their work. State and Party organs then tend to make up for this structural deficiency by influencing research through other, more informal, channels. This kind of external influence, however, seems to be dictated less by considerations of technological and economic rationality, but rather by personal, institutional, sectoral, regional or other group interests.
