Ausgangspunkt und Modell dieses Aufsatzes ist "Projekt Migration", eine Ausstellung zur Geschichte der Arbeitsmigration nach Deutschland und zum europäischen Grenzregime, die Alltagsgegenstände und Kunstwerke umfasste. Dieser Aufsatz konzentriert sich auf die Materialität von Ausstellungsobjekten und stellt gegenwartshistorische Ausstellungsansätze innerhalb und außerhalb etablierter öffentlicher Institutionen infrage, die sich hauptsächlich auf Artefakte wie Dokumente und Objekte des täglichen Gebrauchs stützen, wenn sie Migrationsprozesse und das Leben eingewanderter Familien repräsentieren. Die Geschichten, die mit diesen Objekten verbunden sind, beziehen sich besonders auf den Alltag von Männern und Frauen während ihrer ersten Jahre als Arbeitskräfte in Deutschland. Indem sie die Immigranten und Immigrantinnen so zu "ewigen Migrant/innen" machen, neigen Migrationsausstellungen zu einer Fiktionalisierung der Einwanderer und Einwanderinnen, die dann als realistische und neutrale Darstellung erscheint. Im Gegensatz zu Historiker/innen übernehmen Künstler/innen, die ihre Arbeiten signieren, auf eine direktere Weise Verantwortung für die Geschichten und Anspielungen, die bei den Betrachtenden Emotionen evozieren. Sie schaffen so eine kritische Distanz zwischen der betrachtenden Person und dem Objekt und machen die cultural spaces (LIPPARD 2003) zwischen ihnen und der Autorin oder dem Autor wahrnehmbar. Die grundsätzliche Präsentation der Immigranten und Immigrantinnen als "die Anderen" und die damit verbundene voyeuristische Haltung kann so vermieden werden. Künstlerische Arbeiten in Ausstellungen zur Migrationsgeschichte machen es möglich und nötig, dass die Zuschauer und Zuschauerinnen mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund selbst Position beziehen. Dieser Aufsatz spricht für künstlerischer Interventionen in migrationsgeschichtlichen Ausstellungen.

In den letzten Jahren ist das Interesse der Sozialwissenschaften am "Visuellen" stetig gewachsen, und es wurden in diesem Zusammenhang zahlreiche Methoden konzipiert und genutzt. Mittlerweile ist eine kritische Masse auch mit Blick auf die Reflexion der Verwendung visueller Verfahren im Rahmen je spezifischer Themenstellungen erreicht. FQS 11(2) beschäftigt sich mit Arbeiten, die aus den Sozialwissenschaften und den Visual Arts hervorgegangen sind und sich mit Migration und sozialer Abgrenzung befassen.
In diesem Einleitungsbeitrag wird zunächst ein Überblick über die Schwerpunktausgabe und die ihr zugehörigen Artikel gegeben. Danach diskutieren wir, in welcher besonderen Weise visuelle Verfahren zu Forschung über Migration und soziale Abgrenzung beitragen können.

Die Exhumierungen von Opfern der repressiven Franco-Politik sind kulturelle Praktiken von großem heuristischem Wert, die eine Analyse des öffentlichen Auftretens, der Verbreitung und der Aneignung eines traumatischen Gedächtnisses im lokalen Kontext erlauben. Der Einsatz visueller Medien zur Aufzeichnung der sozialen Aktivitäten im Umfeld der Ausgrabungen dient nicht allein als Protokollierungsinstrument, sondern ist häufig sogar der Auslöser für ein entstehendes soziales Gedächtnis. Im ersten Teil des Aufsatzes beleuchten wir die verschiedenen Formen visueller und audiovisueller Intervention vonseiten der diversen Beteiligten, welche die Exhumierungen von Massengräbern als Veranstaltungen gestalten. Im zweiten Teil fokussieren wir auf die von Sozialwissenschaftler/innen eingesetzten visuellen Methoden, insbesondere auf die Videoaufzeichnung der narrativen Zeugnisse von Überlebenden und Augenzeugen.

This article discusses the photo interview method used in a participatory inter- and transdisciplinary research setting. The photo interview has proven particularly useful for sustainability and environmental studies in which eliciting community points of view is crucial to the research effort. Based on experiences in several countries, the author describes and analyses the photo interview process and its three phases—involving, sharing and analysing—and explores potential influences on data quality. In the first phase, researchers use the photo interview method to involve community residents from different levels of society in the research process. In the second phase, the photo interview method encourages community residents and scientists to share insights and perspectives and to partner in developing a common understanding of local structures, processes, and possible solutions. In the third phase, the photo interview method allows researchers to analyse visual and textual data as a representation of a local societal context. In decoding images, researchers ground the analysis in subjective perspectives, use residents' visual codes along with other methods to further analyse community data, and explore the wider societal context in which the study is embedded.

Was bleibt vom genuin Fotografischen/Filmischen nach dem Ende des fotografischen Zeitalters? Welche grundlegenden medialen Charakteristika des Fotografischen bzw. Filmischen werden von aktuellen künstlerischen Prozessen aufgegriffen oder umgedeutet? Derartigen Fragen widmete sich das Forschungsprojekt RESET THE APPARATUS!, das als PEEK-Projekt (Arts- based Research) an der Abteilung für Medientheorie der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien realisiert wurde und mit dieser Publikation eine Mischung aus Überblickskatalog und Abschlussbericht vorlegt. Ausgehend von dem – freilich nur auf den ersten Blick – paradox wirkenden Umstand, dass die neuen digitalen Technologien ein gesteigertes Interesse an den analogen Medien hervorgerufen haben, widmet sich dieses Buch – das auch und insbesondere Materialsammlung ist – Fragen nach der Rolle des spezifisch Fotografischen (photographic) bzw. Filmischen (filmic) in der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Im Zentrum steht eine genaue Betrachtung der im Forschungsprojekt untersuchten Medien bzw. deren materieller/technischer Grundlagen, die niemals allein Mittel zum Zweck sind, sondern sich auf mannigfaltige Weise in den künstlerischen Prozess, dessen Ergebnis, Wahrnehmung und Verwertung einschreiben.Dieses konstitutive Potenzial des Apparatus ist aus den Medienwissenschaften gut bekannt, weshalb das Besondere an der vorliegenden Publikation nicht die Fragestellung per se, sondern viel mehr dessen Aufbereitung ist. Als Arts-based Research-Projekt wird hier gewissermaßen der Spieß umgedreht und sprichwörtlich in der Schraube die Maschine erkannt. Ausgehend von einer umfangreichen Materialsammlung und in Zusammenarbeit mit externen Partner*innen (aus den Bereichen der Wissenschaft als auch den Künsten, heimischer als auch internationaler Provenienz) wird ein Feld erschlossen, das man in den medienwissenschaftlichen Diskursen schon öfters betreten hat, hier aber plötzlich aus einem anderen Blickwinkel sieht. Und das ist nicht bloß als Metapher gemeint, denn zu sehen gibt es in diesem Buch/Katalog wirklich einiges: Die Publikation präsentiert sich als durch theoretische Texte angereicherter Bildband und stellt in dieser Form ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis zeitgenössischer Medienkunst vor, die das Projektteam in den vergangenen Jahren befragt hat. Das Buch ist folgendermaßen aufgebaut: Ein einleitender Aufsatz der drei Projektleiter*innen, Gabriele Lutz, Edgar Lissel und Nina Jukić – der sich selbst explizit als "Gebrauchsanweisung" ("User's Manual") versteht – erörtert nicht nur die wesentlichen Fragestellungen und Perspektiven, sondern zieht zugleich Resümee über den aktuellen Stand von Kunstproduktionen, die Analoges und Digitales zusammendenken, beziehungsweise der theoretischen Debatten, die dieses Verhältnis begleiten. Hervorzuheben ist, dass sich die hier angestellten Betrachtungen niemals in einer Gegenüberstellung oder Aufrechnung eines Verfahrens gegenüber dem anderen erschöpfen, sondern darauf angelegt sind, die tradierten Grenzen der als überkommen (vor)verurteilten medialen Technologien aufzubrechen und deren Einfluss auf aktuelle künstlerische Verfahren zu bewerten. Die Aussage "For a contemporary understanding of medium specificity, it is necessary to give up 'the old fiction of the purity of media' and to consider their 'interpenetration and contamination'" wird unter Bezug auf die Filmwissenschaftlerin Erika Balsom als ein Hauptanliegen des Projekts formuliert. Bei dem thematischen Streifzug durch die maßgebende Film- und Medientheorie gerät denn gemäß der Stoßrichtung des Projekts insbesondere die Perspektive der Künstler*innen in den Blick, die den zweiten Teil des Buches bildet. Dabei geht es etwa um künstlerische Entscheidungen für die Arbeit mit speziellen medialen Technologien, ausgehend von dem simplen – auch wenn für die Betrachter*innen des fertigen Werkes oft nicht maßgebenden – Umstand der direkten Arbeit am künstlerischen Produkt und die Anwendung künstlerischer Verfahren, die nicht notwendigerweise auf standardisierten Wegen erfolgen muss; man denke an das breite Feld des experimentellen Films und der experimentellen Fotografie und seiner Tradition des physischen Zugriffs auf das Trägermaterial. Bezugnahmen zu jener filmischen Praxis, die unter dem Label expanded cinema ausgehend von avantgardistischen Kunstproduktionen seit den 1960er-Jahren unterschiedliche Zuschreibungen erfahren hat, prägen dann auch stark die vorliegende Analyse, wobei der hier angelegte Begriff der "Erweiterung" (im Sinne eines 'to expand') auch auf das Feld der Fotografie, oder besser: des Fotografischen, übertragen wird. Etwa wenn unter Bezug auf das erst später geprägte und weniger bekannte Schlagwort der expanded photography argumentiert wird, dass die hier verwendeten Begriffe photographic bzw. filmic darauf hinweisen würden, dass sich solcherart bezeichnete Praktiken, auch wenn sie ihre medialen Grenzen überschreiten, dennoch stets genuine Medienspezifika bewahren. Der dritte und vierte Teil des Buches stellt die Kooperationen mit verschiedenen Medienkünstler*innen bzw. "Partner Collaborations" sowie die Arbeiten von Studierenden aus Wien und Essen vor. In dieser heterogenen Werkcollage werden theoretische Mythen des Digitalen, wie etwa der Tod des Kinos und Videos in Zeiten von digitalen Medien aufgegriffen und dekonstruiert (etwa in den Beiträgen von Jonathan Walley über Gibson+Recorder und Andy Birtwistle über die Arbeiten von Gebhard Sengmüller), Bezugnahmen zu historischen Vorläufern des kinematografischen Dispositivs, etwa zur Phantasmagorie, gezogen (Beitrag von Hubertus Amelunxen) und schließlich mit den Arbeiten der Studierenden die Frage nach dem Verbleib des Analogen ins Zeitalter der "Digital Natives" transferiert. Der letzte Teil des Buches bindet über drei theoretische Texte und ein Essay die künstlerischen Arbeiten wieder an den Apparatus-Begriff zurück. Der im Titel des Projekts angelegte Terminus des Apparatus hatte seinen Ursprung bekanntermaßen in der französischen psychoanalytischen Filmtheorie der 1970er-Jahre, die stark mit dem Namen Jean-Louis Baudry verbunden ist, den Film seines Objektcharakters enthebt und seine Analyse in ein weiter gefasstes architektonisches wie diskursives Setting einbindet, das zahlreiche zusätzliche Aspekte – vor allem jenen der Rezeption – berücksichtigt. Die Autor*innen halten fest, dass die Apparatus-Theorie der Rolle der Produktion keine herausragende Aufmerksamkeit beikommen hat lassen – ein Missstand, den das vorliegende Werk kompensieren soll. Dieser letzte Teil steht dabei in direkter Verbindung zum sogenannten "Corpus", ein von Lissel, Jutz und Jukić zusammengetragener Katalog künstlerischer Arbeiten, die allesamt die Fragestellungen des Projektes von unterschiedlichen Perspektiven ausgehend illustrieren und kommentieren. Dieser wird von TAGS strukturiert, die jeweils einen spezifischen, medialen Aspekt im Nachdenken über den Apparatus adressieren. Damit wird quasi eine nonlineare Lektüre des Buches – ähnlich dem Blättern in einem Ausstellungskatalog – nahegelegt und so nicht nur das Verhältnis von Theorie und Medienkunst, sondern auch dessen Erfassungsprozesse als ein vernetztes Bedeutungsfeld dargestellt.Diese von den Autor*innen in der Einleitung festgelegten TAGS werden damit nicht als unverrückbare Zuschreibungen, sondern als Ausgangspunkte zur Erkundung eines heterogenen Korpus von Medienkunst konzipiert, der so von verschiedenen Seiten aus durchwandert werden kann. Am besten funktioniert das auf der Homepage des Projektes (http://www.resettheapparatus.net), die mit präzisen Beschreibungen, Informationen und weiterführenden Links zu allen 140 versammelten Arbeiten aufwartet. Die ausgewählten Arbeiten selbst fokussieren – gemäß der Themensetzung des Projekts – die letzten zehn Jahre, reichen aber da und dort bis in die 1960er-Jahre zurück. Versammelt sind sowohl bekannte Projekte, als auch solche, die weniger bekannt sind. So reicht etwa der TAG "Body Involvement", der auf ein Miteinbeziehen des gesamten Körpers in den medialen Prozess abzielt, von Alfons Schillings Sehmaschinen (mehrere Arbeiten ab den 1960er-Jahren) über Gustav Deutschs Taschenkino (1995), bis hin zu einer aus den frühen 2000er-Jahren stammenden Arbeit von Olena Newkryta (Absolventin der Universität für Angewandte Kunst Wien), die Proband*innen dazu aufforderte, unbelichteten Negativfilm ein Monat lang am Körper zu tragen, um diesen anschließend zu entwickeln und in Fotografien überzuführen. One month on skin (2013 – 2014) treibt so den indexikalischen Charakter der analogen Fotografie – und damit eines der zentralen Merkmale des Mediums – auf die Spitze.Der TAG "Still / Moving" wiederum erkundet das Verhältnis zwischen Einzelbild und Laufbild, wodurch auf die ganz grundsätzliche materielle Verbindung zwischen analoger Fotografie und analogem Film fokussiert wird. Die unter diesem TAG versammelten Arbeiten bieten einen geradezu lehrbuchartigen Überblick über experimentelles Filmschaffen, das dieses Verhältnis auf unterschiedlichste Weise hinterfragt und in der Arbeit Motion Picture (1984) von Peter Tscherkassky, die auf einem Frame von Arbeiter verlassen die Fabrik (1895) der Brüder Lumière basiert, bis in die Geburtsstunde des Films zurückreicht. Weitere TAGS, wie "Darkroom Exposed", "Fleeting Images", "Live Acts", "Lost & Found", "Material Agency", "Relics", "Repurposing the Hardware", "Scale & Format", "Site Specifity" und "Transplanar Images", illustrieren dabei nicht nur die strukturierte Weise, mit der sich das Forschungsprojekt den Gegenständen genähert hat, sondern auch die beeindruckende politische Tragweite der Verflechtung von Film und Fotografie. Sie zeigen so die vielen Kernbereiche der Gesellschaft auf, die von Medien schon immer durchzogen sind bzw. waren. Dass dabei etwa Themenfelder wie das Anthropozän und der materielle Überfluss, die Energieballung in städtischen Räumen und der stete Zerfall von Bildträgern wie Zelluloid als konstitutiver Bestandteil unserer Erinnerungspraxis thematisiert werden, erweist, wie vielfältig anschlussfähig die hier aufgeführten theoretischen wie künstlerischen Impulse sind. Die englischsprachige Publikation ist – auch das soll gesagt werden – ein schön gemachtes, wertiges und preiswertes Buch, das so einige Verlage über Buchdesign und Preisgestaltung nachdenken lassen sollte. Am bemerkenswertesten ist dabei sicher die Funktion, die es – in Verbindung mit den Beiträgen der Projektpartner*innen – als überraschend übersichtliches Nachschlagwerk und gleichsam Dokumentationsversuch einer heterogenen Medienkunst-Medientheorieszene erfüllt. Der einleitende Text des Projektteams ist in seiner Klarheit und Übersichtlichkeit zudem eine Lektüre, die sich sämtlichen Leser*innen empfiehlt, die sich mit Film, Fotografie und Medienkunst beschäftigen – und zwar unabhängig davon, ob dies auf einem akademischen Niveau geschieht oder auf einem ganz "allgemeinen" Interesse an Kunst und Medien fußt. We can observe signs of development of civilization processes in Ukraine everywhere on a daily basis. Such achievements of mankind as computers, smart phones, digital photography, tablets, etc. are becoming common and natural. Along with the positive signs of the development of civilization, we see many achievements that are difficult to grasp by the mind of an ordinary person. In particular, along with the positive achievements of mankind, we must learn to recognize and counter the new inventions used by some states to wage aggression in time.The article highlights the visible aspects of a new type of modern war, which the state of Russia, is waging against its neighbors, including Ukraine, whenever it is convenient to them. These are the so-called «hybrid wars», which Russia is testing on the neighboring countries.In the article it is pointed out, that Russia never starts aggression openly; it always covers its intentions with «peaceful» rhetoric. As usual, Russia's victims are those neighboring countries that are unable to show power and information confrontation. It has become a tendency that when the time comes, the Russian leaders begin aggression, and their armed forces act according to a motto deduced by Machiavelli and later applied by the Bolsheviks in the 1920s: «You're either with us, or against us». Starting aggression, Russia continues to declare tales about friendship and peace to the whole world.In the main part of the article, the author emphasizes that all the wars that Russia is embarking on with neighboring countries have a common feature - the geographic location of these states, easily accessible to the Russian armed forces. The author of the article implicitly emphasizes the aggressive features of the historical path of Russia, in particular, the period when it began to transform from Muscovy to Russia. In the article, the author emphasizes that Russia by its behavior, in fact, convinces many prescient people that it is the heir to the robbery mind, which it adopted back in the XIII century from the Golden Horde. Actually, the Russian leadership inherited the habit of stealing another's living space and another's territory from Batu Khan's Horde. This habit gradually gained importance of the national feature of the Russians.One of the most dangerous methods that precedes Russia's use of firearms is intensification of the war in the information space. As usual, Russia's aggression against the nations it has sacrificed is a sign of interference with the humanitarian sphere of these peoples' lives. In other words, in the Russian version, information war is a mandatory prelude to the start of an actual war.An example of one of the anti-Ukrainian special operations of information war against Ukraine is given in an article by a famous historian from Ukraine, Serhii Terno, in which he reveals the purpose of an information war, which became quite evident after analyzing the content of a class book for fifth grade students recently published in Ukraine. Serhiy Terno convincingly, by demonstrating examples and evidence, proves that the information war that Russia is imposing on Ukraine has a final goal - the complete assimilation of the Ukrainian ethnos and the transformation of the Ukrainian living space into a «Russian dimension». Usually, such behavior in Russia precedes an armed attack, and it always happens if the victim of Russian aggression refuses to obey Russia's orders.In the article, the author indirectly helps the reader to recognize that there are new and improved old methods of waging war in the modern evolutionary development of world civilization processes.Experts specializing in the study of the development of interethnic relations, only after the open military aggression of Russia, which began in 2014, acknowledged that Russia is waging an aggressive war against Ukraine, which political scientists called «hybrid». One of the aspects of "hybrid" war is the war in the information space, and the battle for historical memory is at the forefront of information battles. Revealing this aspect, it would be appropriate to clarify the explanation of the term «historical memory» with an expanded explanation of the right to interpret national history, which we understand with the help of historical knowledge.By way of conclusion, the author cites vivid examples of participation in the information war of the representatives of the aggressor state to emphasize the importance of so called «battles» in the information space. The Ukrainian intellectuals' struggle for the right of young people for historical memory and justice is described in a convincing and successful way. Much attention is given to the Ukrainian historians' assessment of the value of research and study of historical memory. The article provides incontrovertible evidence that historical knowledge is a type of information weapon, which in many cases is more effective than a firearm. If we treat «historical memory» as one of the modern information weapons, the article covers examples of the use of these weapons in the context of the information war.Finally, quotes of influential scholars on how they assessed the importance of informational influence on the well-known historical figures are stated in the article: the queen of the Russian Empire, Catherine II and the German propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels.

Aula de Gestión e Investigación del Patrimonio Arquitectónico e Industrial G+ I PAI ; [Resumen] A principios de los años sesenta, Jesús de la Sota Martínez (1924-1980) recibió por parte de su hermano Alejandro el encargo de amueblar el edificio del Gobierno Civil de Tarragona, una de las aportaciones más originales a la arquitectura española del siglo XX. El resultado fueron sillas y mesas vanguardistas, con un acabado industrial que no admitía rastros de manualidad. Consciente de la facilidad de la reproducción en serie de sus prototipos, Jesús de la Sota se lanzó a una aventura empresarial que no fue del todo comprendida en su momento, y que tenía como objetivo dar respuesta a la imposibilidad de encontrar piezas que se ajustaran a las demandas de la arquitectura moderna. Este interés por los procesos industriales, y su posible aplicación al diseño de mobiliario e interiores, cristalizó en la creación de una sociedad con José Ramón Cores Uría que surtió de muebles, lámparas y otros objetos a aquellos sectores de la sociedad madrileña más permeables a unas propuestas que estaban conectadas con el espíritu de la Bauhaus. La imagen del local donde se pusieron a la venta dichas propuestas era una verdadera declaración de intenciones: amplios planos blancos que resaltaban aún más el rigor geométrico, la unidad y la búsqueda de lo esencial. En este sentido, la experiencia en el diseño de mobiliario de Jesús de la Sota constituye un caso singular y atípico dentro del panorama español: su respuesta a las dinámicas del mercado y de la producción en serie pone de manifiesto los problemas a los que se enfrentó la arquitectura moderna del momento, pero también la habilidad y el oficio con el que se supieron resolver. Sin embargo, y a pesar de todos los esfuerzos, la empresa –concebida como un proyecto integral de interiorismo– no tuvo el éxito esperado, en parte, por resultar demasiado adelantada para la España de la época, frustrando la posibilidad de una producción continua y generalizada de su trabajo en el campo del diseño industrial. En 1974 se dio por clausurada la experiencia y Jesús de la Sota se refugió en la pintura, trasladando sus esquemas anteriores a la fotografía, al dibujo y a los óleos, a los que se entregó con pasión hasta 1980, año en el que falleció en Berlín. Pero lo más singular es que este innovador, heterodoxo y transgresor creador, que sorprendía con sus monumentos a la solidez y a la simplicidad, era un hombre angustiado por alcanzar la perfección, para lo que no dudó en idear alianzas interdisciplinares y en formar a un equipo de operarios que pudiese materializar sus proyectos, los cuales aunaban arquitectura, interiorismo, industria y fabricación en serie. Ahí radica su utopía, así como los fundamentos que explican el hecho de que sus piezas de mobiliario hayan podido resistir tan magníficamente el paso del tiempo. [Abstract] In the early sixties, Jesús de la Sota Martínez (1924-1980) was required by his famous brother Alejandro to furnish the Civil Government of Tarragona, one of the most original Spanish examples of architecture of the XXth century. The result was avant-garde industrial chairs and tables, without traces of craft. Realizing the real possibility of mass reproduction of his prototypes, Jesús de la Sota launched a business that was not well understood at the time. However, he was trying to offer solutions in order to solve the impossibility of finding furniture that suited the demands of modern architecture. His interest in industrial processes, and their possible application to the design of furniture and interiors, was crystallized in the creation of a partnership with José Ramón Cores which provide chairs, tables, lamps and other objects to those sectors of Madrid´s society more receptive to proposals well connected with the spirit of the Bauhaus. The image of the shop showed their intentions quite clearly: large white panels evinced geometric rigor, unity and essentiality in design. Therefore, Jesus de la Sota was a unique and atypical designer in the industrial Spanish panorama: its response to the market dynamics and the mass production highlighted the problems of the modern architecture in Spain, but also the skills he employed to face the challenges. Nevertheless, despite all efforts, the company —a global interior design project— was not as successful as expected, partly because it was too advanced, frustrating the possibility of a continuous production and ending up his work in the field of industrial design. In 1974 the adventure ceased and Jesús de la Sota took refuge in painting, moving his previous schemes to photography, drawing and oil on canvas, to which he was dedicated with passion until 1980, when he died in Berlin. But the most singular thing is that this innovative, unorthodox and visionary creator, author of genuinely strong and simple pieces, was a man anxious for perfection. In this regard, he established interdisciplinary alliances and even trained a team who could implement projects ranging from architecture to interiors and industrial production. Therein lays his utopia, and the basis that explain the fact that his pieces of furniture have been able to resist so magnificently over time.

Der heutige Einsatz von UAVs findet in vielen Bereichen statt. Deren Spektrum erstreckt sich von der zivilen Nutzung wie zum Beispiel bei Such- und Rettungsmissionen, Luftbildfotografie, industriellen Überwachungsaufgaben im Bereich Sicherheitsmanagement bis hin zu militärischen Einsätzen, wie Aufklärung, Überwachung, aber ebenso Kampfeinsätze. Im Rahmen des Forschungsvorhabens ALUSTRA MOEWE wird ein funktionsfähiges autonomes mit Helium befülltes Luftschiff aufgebaut, das als Kamera-Plattform für die 3DModellierung von Gebäuden und der Erdoberfläche zum Einsatz gelangen soll. Dazu werden Flugführungs- und Regelungstheorien zu einem durchgängigen Gesamtkonzept zusammengeführt, die es erlauben, unter Berücksichtigung der entsprechenden Gebäude beziehungsweise über die Landschaften fliegen und mittels einer digitalen Kamera Aufnahmen zu erstellen. Diese Aufnahmen sollen dann im Post-Processing für die Generierung der virtuellen Modelle herangezogen werden. Dieses Projektziel erfordert eine sehr geringe Trajektoriendynamik, damit die Aufnahmen keine Bewegungsunschärfe enthalten. Zudem ist die Anforderung an die Genauigkeit der geflogenen Trajektorie sehr hoch. Das dazu entwickelte Führungskonzept ist für diesen automatischen Abflug von Wegpunkten des eingesetzten Luftschiffs entwickelt worden. Bei dem hier ausgewählten Ansatz geht man vom Aufbau klar abgegrenzter funktioneller Prozesse und Abläufe aus. Der daraus resultierende, hierarchische, funktionsorientierte Architekturansatz ist in Form eines Drei-Ebenen-Architekturmodells realisiert. Die Modellbildung des Luftschiffes erfolgt als starrer Körper mit konstanter Masse sowie Trägheit. Das von Kämpf [15] übernommene Modell, mit modifiziertem Leitwerk auf ein Lambda Leitwerk, berücksichtigt in der Impulsbilanz keine internen Massenflüsse in den Differentialgleichungen. Vor der Reglerimplementierung wird die Dynamik des ungeregelten Luftschiffes eingehend untersucht. Dabei werden die erzielbaren Leistungen des Fluggerätes ebenso beachtet wie die Stabilitäts- und Steuereigenschaften, da diese die Grundlage für den Regelungsentwurf bilden und bereits a priori die maximal erreichbare Manöverleistung des Gesamtsystems definieren. Für den Reglerentwurf ist es notwendig, Anforderungen aus Sicht des Missionsauftrages zu definieren. Das Ziel ist, sich über die Regelungsziele und die Qualität des gewünschten und geforderten Systems Gedanken zu machen. Diese Wünsche und Anforderungen sowie deren physikalische und technische Einschränkungen und Grenzen müssen aus Sicht des Anwenders so ausführlich formuliert werden, dass sich daraus konkrete, regelungstechnische Beziehungen herleiten lassen. Nach der ausführlichen Beschreibung der Reglersynthese der einzelnen Regelungen und deren regelungstechnischen Analyse wird die Tauglichkeit durch Untersuchung des Verhaltens des geregelten Systems im Nominalfall, mit Modellunsicherheiten und unter Windeinfluss überprüft. Zusätzlich wird zu einem ein sogenannter "Iron-Bird" als Systemprüfstand aufgebaut, welcher bei Entwicklung, Anpassung und Tests der Flugmissionen und der Systeme des Luftschiffes eingesetzt wird, um damit abschließend den Funktionsnachweis beim Einsatz auf dem realen Versuchsträger ALUSTRA I bei sehr geringer Trajektoriendynamik zu erbringen. Zum Schluss konnte mit einem autonomen Flug des Versuchsträgers ALUSTRA I gezeigt werden, dass das Flugführungskonzept die Anforderungen, die vorgegebene Trajektorie mit hoher Bandbreite und guter Führungsgenauigkeit, erfüllen kann. Die durchgeführte Mission sowohl in der HIL-Umgebung als auch auf dem Versuchsfeld besteht in Anlehnung an die Örtlichkeiten des Versuchsfeldes in Gauting im Freistaat Bayern. ; The use of UAVs nowadays expands to numerous application areas. The range of applications extends from civilian use, such as search and rescue missions, aerial photography, and industrial monitoring tasks in security management, to military missions, such as reconnaissance, surveillance and combat deployment. As part of the research project ALUSTRA MOEWE, a functional autonomous airship filled with helium has been constructed in order to be employed as a camera platform for 3D modelling of buildings and ground surface. In that scope, flight guidance and control theories were brought together into a comprehensive holistic concept, capable of flying around and over the buildings or landscape respectively, and of delivering images using a digital camera with the image recordings being successively used in post-processing for the generation of virtual models. The project objectives require a flight trajectory of low order dynamics, in order for the recordings to contain no motion blur. Additionally, the requirements in terms of accuracy of the flown trajectory are very high. The guidance concept for this purpose has been based on the automatic deviation of the airship with respect to waypoints. The approach selected here results from structuring based on well-defined functional processes and procedures. The resulting hierarchical, function-oriented architecture approach is realized in the form of a three-level architecture model. The airship is modelled as a rigid body with constant mass and inertia. The model adopted by Kämpf [15], albeit with modified fin based on a lambda fin, takes into account no internal mass flow in the differential equations of the momentum balance. Before the controller implementation, the dynamics of the uncontrolled airship are thoroughly investigated. Herein the attainable performance as well as the stability and control characteristics of the aircraft are considered, as these form the basis for the controller design and a priori define the maximum achievable manoeuvre performance of the overall system. For the controller design, it is necessary to define requirements from the perspective of the Mission objectives. The target is to hence go about the control objectives and the quality of the desired and required system attributes. These desired deliverables and prerequisites as well as their physical and technical constraints and limitations need to be so elaborately formulated, from the user's point of view, on order to deduce concrete control engineering relations. After the detailed description and the respective control engineering analysis for the control synthesis of the various schemes, follows the suitability check through studying of the controlled system's behaviour in the nominal case, taking into account model uncertainties as well as wind influence. Supplementary to the aforementioned investigations, a so-called "Iron Bird" is built as a system test-rig. The "Iron Bird" is utilised in the development, implementation and testing of the flight missions and the employed systems of the airship, in order to provide conclusive proof of function under very low trajectory dynamics for the prototype ALUSTRA I. Finally, through an autonomous flight of the test vehicle ALUSTRA I, it has been showcased that the flight control concept can satisfy the requirements of the predetermined trajectory with high control-bandwidth and good guidance accuracy. The mission has been executed in both the HIL environment as well as on the proving ground located in the area of the Gauting test field in Bavaria.

Esta investigación se centra en el análisis de la evolución morfológica de la ciudad de Braga, situada en la Región Norte de Portugal. La elección de este estudio de caso se vio influenciada por el importante carácter histórico y patrimonial que posee la ciudad tradicional, es decir, su Centro Histórico, reflejo material de las distintas épocas y contextos que contribuyeron a la formación de su tejido urbano. Además, los cambios producidos en las últimas décadas, sobre todo después de la instauración del régimen democrático de 1974, han supuesto una notable transformación en su forma urbana y, en consecuencia, provocando importantes diferencias morfológicas entre centro y periferia. El interés general de esta Disertación recae en la transformación de la forma urbana de Braga, abordando el análisis mediante una lectura diacrónica de los sucesivos cambios morfológicos. Los objetivos planteados se centraron en indicar los principales factores y elementos urbanos que estructuraron el tejido urbano de la ciudad, permitiendo determinar posteriormente la morfología resultante que hoy en día la caracteriza, además de identificar sus permanencias y variables morfológicas. Los resultados obtenidos formarán la base que permitirá dar respuesta al último objetivo, en el que se definen varios indicadores con la intención de mejorar la articulación y relación entre las diversas partes y escalas de Braga. La metodología aplicada se basó en la del estudio de caso, recurriendo al uso de la técnica del análisis documental con la finalidad de recoger los datos necesarios para la realización de la investigación analítica, utilizando de forma secundaria, las técnicas de observación y fotografía. Los resultados obtenidos serán interpretados de forma crítica y, posteriormente, correlacionados con las teorías y conceptos del urbanismo, dando lugar a las consideraciones finales. Para la estructuración de la investigación pueden considerarse tres bloques, respectivamente, el primero introduce el tema y presenta el marco teórico centrado en el urbanismo que ayudará a la concretización del análisis, además de exponer el contexto actual de Braga; el segundo bloque, dividido a su vez en dos franjas temporales, trataría la evolución de la ciudad antes y después de 1974 y; finalmente, se presentarían las conclusiones, mediante la sistematización de los resultados obtenidos, la respuesta a los objetivos y las consideraciones finales. En conclusión, se han verificado grandes transformaciones en la estructura urbana de Braga, consecuencia de las infraestructuras viarias que potenciaron la extensión descontrolada de la mancha construida, apoyadas por cambios económicos que aumentaron el ritmo de crecimiento y, beneficiadas por la inoperancia de los principales planes de ordenación del territorio y el camino que seguían las Políticas Urbanas hasta hace muy poco. Proponiendo como camino a seguir, la aceptación de la realidad urbana actual, reforzando sus puntos positivos y reduciendo los negativos a través de la intervención sobre los mismos. ; Abstract: This research focuses on the analysis of the morphological evolution of the city of Braga, located in the Northern region of Portugal. The choice of this case study was influenced by the important historical and heritage character that has the traditional city, namely, its historic center, the material reflection of the different periods and contexts that contributed to the formation of its urban tissue. In addition, changes in recent decades, especially after the establishment of the democratic regime in 1974, have made a remarkable transformation in its urban form and, consequently causing important morphological differences between the center and the periphery. The interest of this dissertation relapses in the transformation of the urban form of Braga, approaching a diachronic analysis by reading successive morphological changes. The objectives focused on indicate the main factors and urban elements that structured the urban tissue of the city, allowing then determine the resulting morphology that characterizes it today, and identify their permanence and morphological variables. The results form the basis to enable a response to the ultimate objective, in which various flags are defined with the intention of improving the articulation and relationship between the various parts and scales of Braga. The methodology was based on the case study, resorting to the use of documentary analysis technique in order to collect the necessary facts to perform the analytical research, using secondarily, observation techniques and photography. The results will be interpreted critically and, subsequently, correlated with the theories and concepts of town planning, leading to the final considerations. For structuring this research can be considered three blocks, respectively, the first introduces the topic and presents the theoretical framework centered in town planning to help the realization of the analysis, furthermore to display the current context of Braga; the second block, divided into two periods, explain the evolution of the city before and after 1974; finally, conclusions are presented through the systematization of the results obtained, the response to the objectives and final considerations. In conclusion, great changes have occurred in the urban structure of Braga, as a result of road infrastructure that maximize the stain sprawl built, supported by economic changes that increased the rate of growth and, benefited from the failure of the main plans and planning and the way that Urban Policies had follow until nowadays. Its proposed as a way forward, the acceptance of the current urban reality, reinforcing the positive factors and reducing the negative points through it intervention.

El objeto de estudio de la presente disertación es la forma urbana de Vigo, una ciudad situada al suroeste de la provincia de Pontevedra que ha experimentado cambios notables en su fisionomía a lo largo de las últimas décadas, viendo alterada la relación tradicional entre ciudad y periferia al adquirir la última facetas urbanas, resultando en una morfología en la que se entremezclan estructuras compactas y dispersas. El principal atractivo de la investigación reside en su abordaje territorial, al ser englobada en una lectura evolutiva la totalidad del término municipal, permitiendo la identificación de las transformaciones que han tenido lugar en el área, contribuyendo con la misma, a través de una interpretación reflexiva, a la mejor compresión del caso en cuestión y la indicación de posibles actuaciones. Para llevar a cabo dicha finalidad se han establecido una serie de objetivos los cuales se centran en la identificación de sus diversidades formales, relacionadas con las características de la ciudad compacta y de la ciudad fragmentada, deduciendo a través de las modificaciones acaecidas en el lugar los principales procesos de transformación y el papel adquirido por los elementos contenidos en la misma. Los resultados extraídos serán la base utilizada para dar respuesta al último objetivo en el que se establecen posibles vías de intervención para mejorar la articulación de las diversas partes de la forma urbana. La metodología seguida en su elaboración está basada en la de un estudio de caso, haciendo uso de la técnica de análisis documental en el área del urbanismo y del propio local para la recogida de los datos, siendo la observación y la fotografía utilizada de forma complementaria. Las informaciones resultantes han servido de base para el desarrollo analítico, a través del cual tiene lugar una interpretación crítica, que cotejada posteriormente con las teorías iniciales, resultará en las conclusiones finales. La estructura de la disertación se puede dividir en tres bloques, englobando una primera parte la introducción al tema, las teorías que giran en torno al mismo y la contextualización del local, seguido por el análisis interpretativo, dividido a su vez en tres etapas referentes a los años 1960, 1985 y 2010, y por último las determinaciones finales a través de la síntesis de los contenidos, la respuesta a los objetivos y las conclusiones. Entre las principales conclusiones destacan en los factores influyentes los elementos físicos, principalmente la red de comunicaciones de carácter tradicional, los aspectos económicos propiciadores de rápidos ritmos de crecimientos y los aspectos políticos y sociales protagonistas de actuaciones fragmentarias, resultando en una realidad diferente a la ciudad tradicional, llena de particularidades y rica en potencialidades, siendo el camino propuesto a seguir el de la aceptación de una nueva condición urbana necesitada de formas de actuación que resalten sus aspectos positivos y que minimicen sus carencias. ; Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is the urban form of Vigo, a city located in the southeast of the province of Pontevedra with great structural changes during the last decades. Because of that the time-honoured relationship between the core city and the outskirts has been shattered. The result is a morphology with intermingled compact and scattered structures. The main appeal of this kind of research remains in their territorial approach, the whole municipal area seen trough an evolutive rendering. That research identifies the changes of the area and contributes, throughout an reflexive interpretation, to the best comprehension of this particular case and hint of further actions. In order to achieve that goal some points has been established. Identification of formal diversities attached to compact and scattered city patterns. Detection of chiefs transformation processes throughout an analysis of changes in situ and the part played by elements embbeded into that frame. Results shall be crucial in order to answer to the last goal in which potential ways of intervention are established to improve the articulation of distinctive parts of urban form. Methodologic approach is based on case studies. We make use of techniques in documental analysis on the urbanism department and recollect of data on their facilities. Observation and aerial photography are other sources of information. Resulting data supports the analytical development. A critical interpretation collated with initial approaches will take form into final conclusions. This dissertation could be divided into three parts. Part one offers an introduction, expositions over theories and context. Part two evolves the analytical interpretation in three phases around key years, 1960, 1985 and 2010. Part three exposes final determinations through synthesis of contents, answer to objectives and conclusions. Among the main conclusions stands out as key factors the physical elements, namely the traditional communication network, economic aspects propitiating fast development rhythms and political and social aspects, being part of fragmentary interventions. As a result a new city is born, not alike the traditional one. That city is full of particularities and rich in possibilities. The proposed way accepts a new urban condition in need of a set of actions highlighting the positives and playing down the shortages.

Full Text As this edition of Undercurrents is poised to print, an online CBC article reports the top ten things visitors will not see in Beijing during the Olympic Games. The government is in the midst of a crackdown to manufacture what they believe is a more acceptable China, or perhaps more precisely, a more acceptable China to Western eyes. Number one is rain.1 After "rowdy fans" and "pushing and shoving" is "dog meat." Not only will dog meat not appear on restaurant menus, but regular patrons will also be actively discouraged from ordering any canine-related cuisine during the Games.Of the CBC list, the dog meat entry has prompted the greatest deluge of website feedback. A brief sampling: "Say what you will about culture, I still don't like the idea of dogs for food. At least in North America, our animals are killed somewhat humanely…"; "It is ridiculous for us to judge the Chinese harshly for eating dogs as food when we slaughter thousands of animals every year to fill our bellies in North America"; "People rarely eat dog here. It is actually a Korean thing"; "As for dog. a little gamey but delicious! Don't knock it 'til you've tried it!" and finally, "Ace work fact-checking, CBC - that [accompanying] photo of [the] 'dog meat' [protest] was taken in Korea." There are many important queries to pose about the CBC story, featured picture, and resultant commentary. We might immediately raise questions related to nationalism, colonialism, xenophobia, food politics, racism, technology, spectatorship, and animal welfare, among others. Perhaps the more challenging exercise is to consider how these discourses might intersect in complex and layered ways. Even that is not enough, though, as the discourses we use to analyze phenomena are rife with their own suppositions. For example, how does one become a food animal? In which ways do dominant discourses of nationalism preclude the possibility of animal nations? How does "animal welfare" assume the property status of animals and an orientation toward "humane" care rather than industry abolition? In the Academy and society more broadly, we are learning to ask better questions, to question the discourses themselves, and to call out the unmarked categories as the tenuous and contradictory constructions they are. Chief among these pursuits for Animal Studies scholars are efforts to de-center the human subject (e.g., Baker, 1993), that is, to both reveal the human subject as a historically and culturally-mediated construction, and to simultaneously reposition animals as subjects. For many, such a shift is paired with the desire to realize what Sallie McFague (1997) describes as "subject-subjects relations." In her article, "Becoming (more-than) human, Nicole Bonner addresses this notion as part of her inquiry into the the colonial and gendered roots of the concept of "human," suggesting that a continual interrogation of how we understand that category opens up a more ethical position from which to act. In relation, a great deal is missed (and many negative consequences reaped) when our analyses fail to acknowledge animals beyond their metaphorical uses, or when we treat them simply as blank canvasses to splash own desires and fears against These are not minor topics. As Jody Emel and Jennifer Wolch (1998) contend, "As the frontier between civility and barbarity, culture and nature increasingly drifts, animal bodies flank the moving line. It is upon animal bodies that the struggles for naming what is human, what lies within the grasp of human agency, what is possible are taking place" (p. 19). Consider, for example, Akira Mizuta Lippit's contention (this issue) that Western human subjectivity is, as of the late 1950s, haunted subjectivity. That is, the human subject is haunted by animals and all excluded Others. The self-assuring phrase, "It's only an animal," does not hold. Animals return our gaze; they assert their presence and their subjectivity. Following Donna Haraway (1991, 2003), an appreciation of specificity and partial perspective is crucial. As more critical understandings of dominant Western human subjectivity are generated, there must be a simultaneous acknowledgement of the multiplicity of subjectivities and cultures, both human and nonhuman, which are reproduced and negotiated in particular places, at particular times. For example, Gavan Watson shows this in his attention to the interlaced multiple meanings of "the Barn Owl", specifically as related to a controversial photo that appeared in an Ontario birding community one fated winter. Adjacently, Rachel Forbes, in her investigation of the possible place of animals within Aboriginal legal systems, contrasts such renderings against those of traditional Western jurisprudence. Without such engaged orientation, we are prone to regard Others as abstractions, comfortable in the false sense of security that these categories can afford; we potentially elide meaningful differences and remain starkly ignorant of past and present lived experiences, while leaving ourselves largely unmoved and unchanged. This issue of Undercurrents is an invitation. Like the featured photography of Jo-Anne McArthur, which draws us deeper into its subjects, these pieces offer entry points into future discussions. In these offerings, UnderCurrents invites readers to open more spaces where "the question of the animal", and its various human and nonhuman interlocutors, may flourish.

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 254-269). ; Terrence Malick is a unique director in contemporary film, an enigmatic and resolutely independent filmmaker who operates successfully within the studio system of Hollywood. His unusual career - which includes a twenty-year 'sabbatical' during which he appeared to have dropped out of the industry altogether - has produced comparatively little in the way of academic research, though there has been increased activity since the release of The Thin Red Line in 1998. The title - 'Seeking the Other Shore' - provides a thematic approach to the central exploration of the thesis: myth and history in Malick's films. As I argue in the introduction, Malick's characters constantly seek new shores within historical realities, but in so doing they imagine returns to mythic spaces that are either in the past or unattainable in the present. The films themselves provoke us to reconsider particular myths and their historical context. The Introduction includes a brief synopsis of Malick's career and a critical overview of both journalistic and academic writing. A major feature of his films - their intertextuality, from poetry and novels to visual art and music - is also introduced as it plays an important part in all the subsequent chapters. With the release of The New World (2005), I argue that the two recent films should be seen not only as continuing the major themes of historical reality and mythic quest in his 1970s films (Badlands, 1973, and Days of Heaven, 1978), but also as expanding those themes to include colonial encounters with strangeness which underpin the emergence of America as a modem cultural and political entity. Chapter One sets out the historical and mythic terrain upon which all of Malick's films are built, particularly America's nineteenth-century, post-independence character, the idea that America is a nation constantly seeking to renew itself but is never able to outrun the terrors of its previous incarnation, the sins of its fathers. In the section, 'Manufacturing Myth' I use definitions by Claude Levi-Strauss and Richard Slotkin to begin the conversation between history and myth, finding that myth is constructed, laid claim to, and used continuously, and whose claims and uses are inevitably contested. Myths based in history, are, in Richard White's words, "historical creations", and it is this ideological tension between myth and history that one finds in Malick's films. History provides the context for explorations of America's mythic character, myths of innocence, renewal, ambition, and robust individualism. Chapters Two through Five examine the feature films in chronological order. Badlands is discussed in terms of its hybrid genre (drawing on the western and the road movie), before I investigate Holly and Kit's "competing fantasies"- their different views of their adventure and the land through which they travel. Days of Heaven represents a complex examination of the Turnerian myth of the frontier and its transformation at the turn of the twentieth century. Malick's use of period photography is observed as is the influence of American literary naturalism. However, a more significant discussion emerges around the art of Edward Hopper and his modernist interpretation of America coming to terms with its twentieth-century character. The analysis in this section includes Badlands, and illuminates the influence of Hopper on both early films. The Thin Red Line poses something of a problem as it appears to depart from the first two films and The New World, which follows eight years later. As a combat film, it is part of a fairly well-defined and fiercely debated genre, while it's largely male cast and multiple voiceovers differ from the single adolescent female voiceovers of Holly and Linda. However, it challenges the norms of the combat genre in significant ways, particularly in its balancing of personal experience (Malick's screenplay is a subtle adaptation of James Jones's war novels) with historical context (the viewer is alerted, as one rarely is in this genre, to the world outside of the battle). In The New World, Captain John Smith literally seeks the other shore and, like Private Witt in the previous film, encounters a division within himself. In reaffirming the mythic romance between Smith and Pocahontas, Malick opposes the ambition of Enlightenment discovery (m the turbulent heart of Smith) with the sure sense of humanity's relationship with nature (m the calm spirit of Pocahontas). Once again, the film's historical context is the bedrock for its examination of myth, though as the revelatory conclusion, shows, Malick reaches for more spiritual meaning than affirming or revising the historical record. The four feature films that constitute Malick's directorial career thus far are all concerned with fundamental American myths; however, they are also unusual interpretations these myths. Young girls narrate the stories of violent men possessed by the possibilities of a frontier that has passed while young men struggle to come to terms with the extreme violence of battle and the overwhelming strangeness of their surroundings, no matter how 'right' the cause. These are myths born out of history and rendered as cinematic revelations by Terrence Malick.

In this thesis I explore the links and co-production between science and politics in Namaqualand through answering three research questions: 1. To what extent have landscapes in Namaqualand changed during the last 66 years (1939-2005), and how have different land uses contributed to the state of present landscapes? 2. How have science and policy influenced each other in the formation of local planning initiatives during the land reform process in Namaqualand? 3. In what ways do politics and land tenure models influence ecological science concerning communal land management in southern African dryland areas? Land degradation has been a recurrent theme in environmental research. Widespread erosion, overgrazing and desertification presumably caused by African smallholders have been a key concern by policymakers and development agencies for more than a century. This degradation orthodoxy is partly based on equilibrium models in ecological science and partly on modernization theories of land tenure and commercialization of agriculture. Both the equilibrium model and the focus on private land tenure have met considerable critique in Southern Africa and in Africa in general. Critics argue that dryland areas are ecologically unstable and unpredictable and therefore do not fit the equilibrium model. Further, they argue that privatization of land and limitations of grazing animals will marginalize the poorer farmers and lead to more poverty in rural areas, without contributing to more sustainable grazing areas. Still however, equilibriumbased thinking continues to influence African land and environmental policies. This project was carried out in Namaqualand, South Africa where, like in the rest of South Africa, apartheid policy brought about segregation between colored and white farmers, creating a dual agricultural system. The colored population was enclosed in small reserves, while white farmers gradually formed large farms that were later fenced. This unequal distribution of land and resources has continued until today and forms the background for the land reform process that started in 1994. The thesis is a case study of the development of knowledge about environmental change in Namaqualand. It discusses the politicized production and application of science and in doing so the thesis combines the approaches of Political Ecology and Science and Technology Studies. This thesis contributes to the existing body of literature in the following ways: The first paper combines data on land cover changes in Concordia (a communal area in Namaqualand), in a neighboring private farm and in a neighboring nature reserve, with data on the history of land use in the area. The article combines repeat photography covering a period of 66 years with interviews with local farmers on land use history and the authors find that vegetation has changed negligibly in the communal area studied over the 66-year period. While cultivation in the communal areas probably changed the landscape considerably, this change happened prior to the time period studied. In the neighboring private farm, as well as in the nature reserve, vegetation cover and species composition have recovered considerably since 1939. Thus rather than a degradation process in the communal area, we uncover a regeneration in the private farm and the nature reserve, following destocking subsidies and subsequent conservation. The second paper documents how the notion of carrying capacity was employed in a management plan developed as part of the land reform policy process in Concordia. Initially, the notion of carrying capacity was used by communal farmers to challenge the current distribution of land and the dominating idea that communal farming inherently led to degradation. Eventually, however, the concept contributed to depoliticize rangeland policy by rendering the relationship between land and livestock a question of numbers and not a question of how much land communal farmers have access to. The third paper discusses the use of photography in fenceline contrast studies within ecological science. Fence-line contrast study is a methodology used in ecology to compare to areas (divided by a fence). This way one may assume that other conditions are equal and that difference in management practice can explain visible differences found. Based on two cases from Namibia and Southern Africa, the article substantiates that fenceline contrast photographs are more than an objective representation of landscape difference. Rather, they function as models that relate ecological dynamics to presumptions of land tenure and management. The message implied in using such photographs is that communal tenure inherently leads to overgrazing and, hence, to the degradation of pastures, while private tenure results in healthy rangelands. This is a message that echoes the degradation orthodoxy, and the fenceline contrast photographs thus contribute to the current pressure on communal land tenure, even thought the data as such do not support such a pessimistic view. The overall argument of this thesis is that science and politics are intrinsically linked and coproduced, both in political processes and in the production of scientific knowledge. While the findings of the first article questions general assumptions of the validity of the degradation orthodoxy in Namaqualand, the second and the third articles show how degradation orthodoxy still influences both policy processes and science production. Thus, in order to open up for other influences and new and more fitting ecological models in policy and science, change must happen at different levels of the process of knowledge production and policy formation. ; I denne avhandlingen undersøker jeg forbindelsen og samproduksjonen mellom politikk og vitenskap i Namaqualand i Sør Afrika. Avhandlingen tar utgangspunkt i tre forskningsspørsmål: 1) I hvilken grad har landskapet i Namaqualand endret seg fra 1939 til 2005, og hvordan har ulik bruk av påvirket landskapet? 2) Hvordan påvirker vitenskap og politikk hverandre når lokale plandokumenter for beiteallmenninger skal utformes i forbindelse med jordreformprosessen i Namaqualand? 3) På hvilke måter påvirker politiske modeller for organisering av eiendom den økologiske forskningen i beiteallmenninger i det sørlige Afrika? Jordforringelse har vært et tilbakevendende tema i miljøforskningen i Afrika. Politikere, byråkrater, forskere og utviklingsorganisasjoner har trukket en sammenheng mellom fattige bønders praksis og det de har tolket som utbredt erosjon, overbeite og forørkning. I Sør-Afrika er denne oppfatningen delvis basert på likevektsmodeller innen økologien og delvis på moderniseringsteorier innen samfunnsvitenskapene. Både likevektsmodellene og fokuset på privat eierskap har møtt betydelig motstand blant forskere de siste tiårene. Kritikerne hevder at tørrlandsområder har en ustabil og uforutsigbar økologisk dynamikk, og at likevektsmodellene ikke gjenspeiler det som skjer på bakken. Følgelig mener forskere at privatisering og begrensninger i dyretall marginaliserer fattige bønder og fører til mer fattigdom på landsbygda, uten at man vet om det vil føre til en mer bærekraftig utnyttelse av beiteområdene. På tross av disse advarslene dominerer likevektstankegangen afrikansk miljø- og landbrukspolitikk. Avhandlingen bygger på et feltarbeid i Namaqualand i Sør Afrika. Dette området er i likhet med resten av Sør-Afrika merket av kolonitiden og senere av apartheidtiden. Skillet mellom fargede og hvite har ført til en todeling i landbruket. Gjennom 1800 og 1900-tallet tok settlerbøndene kontroll over mer og mer av jorda til lokale gjetere og beitefolk. De fargede bøndene ble henvist til små reservater, mens hvite settlerbønder gradvis dannet større farmer som seinere ble gjerdet inn. Denne ujevne fordelingen av jord og ressurser har fortsatt fram til i dag, og er bakgrunnen for jordreformprosessen som startet i 1994. Denne avhandlingen er en case-studie av samproduksjonen mellom politikk og økologisk vitenskap i Namaqualand. Avhandlingen diskuterer den politiserte bruken og produksjonen av vitenskap og kombinerer dermed innsikter fra politisk økologi med vitenskaps- og teknologistudier. Avhandlingen er et bidrag til den eksisterende litteraturen på følgende måter: Den første artikkelen tar utgangspunkt i data om endringer i vegetasjonsdekket i allmenningen Concordia, på en tilgrensende privat farm og på et naturreservat. Disse dataene sammenliknes med data på tidligere bruk av området. I artikkelen bruker vi gamle og nye landskapsfotografier fra en periode på 66 år. De vi finner i fotografiene analyserer vi sammen med intervjuer med lokale allmenningsbønder og farmere om den historiske bruken av området. I studien fant vi en tendens som er helt motsatt av den myndighetene har advart mot. Myndighetene har fryktet at hard bruk av allmenningen vil føre til uopprettelige skader. Men på den tilgrensende farmen og i naturreservatet viser det seg at vegetasjonen er fortettet og at artssammensetningen er gjenvunnet i løpet av disse 66 årene. Dette har skjedd som følge av apartheidstatens subsidier for å kutte dyretall på farmen på 1970-tallet og det påfølgende vernet av naturreservatet. Dermed kan ikke forskjellen i vegetasjonsdekket i beiteallmenningen på den ene siden og den private farmen og naturreservatet på den andre tilskrives forringelse i allmenningen, men en regenerering og fortetting av vegetasjonen på farmen og i naturreservatet. Dette viser for det første at en slik regenerering er mulig, og for det andre at vegetasjonen i allmenningen holder seg stabil. Den andre artikkelen dokumenterer hvordan begrepet 'bæreevne' ble brukt i en planleggingsprosess i Concordia som var en del av jordreformprosessen i Sør-Afrika. Til å begynne med ble begrepet bæreevne brukt av organisasjonen som organiserte jordreformen i Namaqualand (Surplus People Project) til å vise myndighetene at den skeive fordelingen av jord hverken var økologisk eller økonomisk bærekraftig. Begrepet ble innarbeidet i forvaltningsplanene og i beiteforskriftene, og etter at omfordelingen av jorda var avsluttet fikk bæreevnebegrepet en ny funksjon. Nå bidro 'bæreevne'-begrepet til å avpolitisere beitepolitikken ved at god forvaltning ble redusert til et spørsmål om hvor mange dyr man har på beitet og at diskusjonen om hvor mye land de fattige bøndene burde ha tilgang til ble dysset ned. Den tredje artikkelen diskuterer bruken av fotografier i gjerdekontrast-studier i økologiske akademiske tidsskrifter. Gjerdekontrast-studier er en metode brukt i økologi for å sammenlikne to områder (delt med et gjerde). Basert på to caser, en studie fra Namibia og en fra Sør-Afrika, hevder jeg at gjerdekontrast-fotografier er mer enn en objektiv representasjon av forskjeller i landskap. Like viktig er at de fungerer som modeller som relaterer økologisk dynamikk til forestillinger om at privat eierskap er det mest fordelaktige for enkeltbønders økonomi og for miljøet. Disse modellene er ikke uttalt i artiklene som er studert, men budskapet som bildene uttrykker er at felleseie av beiter i seg selv fører til overbeite og dermed til beiteforringelse, mens privat eierskap medfører en mer bærekraftig bruk. Dette er et budskap som har klangbunn i de store fortellingene om degradering og allmenning som myndighetene i Sør-Afrika og Namibia har forfektet i over hundre år. Dermed bidrar bildebruken og fortolkningen av bildene til et politisk press på allmenningen som organisasjonsform, selv om dataene i artiklene ikke tegner et så dystert bilde. Det overordnede argumentet i denne avhandlingen er at vitenskap og politikk er nøye sammenvevd, både i politiske prosesser og i produksjon av vitenskap. Funnene i den første artikkelen stiller spørsmål ved den generelle oppfatningen av forringelse av beitelandet i Namaqualand. Den andre artikkelen viser at den gamle forestillingen om degradering av almenningsområdene fortsatt påvirker politikk og vitenskap. Den tredje artikkelen viser at oppfatningene om at allmenningsbeite er skadelig lever videre gjennom bruk og fortolkning av gjerdekontrastfotografier. For å åpne opp for økologiske ikke-likevektsmodeller i politikk, og for nye tanker om hva som er bærekraftig organisering av eiendom, må dermed forandringer skje på forskjellige nivåer i politikkutforming og vitenskapsproduksjon. ; Nansenfondet : Nordiska Afrikainstitutet
