A critique of an article by John H. Kessel, SA 0925/C0320. Kessel concluded that 'the higher a person ranked on any of the 4 cognitive dimensions, the greater the likelihood that he was an opinion leader.' This conclusion was based on a number of Chi-square tests for independence computed for several contingency tables, in which one variable was opinion leadership & the other variable was 1 of the 4 cognitive dimensions. It is the purpose of this critique to demonstrate that the inferences drawn from Chi-square calculations are misleading &, perhaps, unwarranted. A test statistic was designed for the calculation of association between categorical variables, in order to indicate the % reduction in the probability of error in predicting a dependent variable from an independent variable. It is concluded from this test that signif relationships are weak relationships. Kessel's findings are viewed with considerable skepticism & it is held that they do not seem to represent a meaningful contribution to the understanding of pol'al behavior. I. Langnas.

When on November 29th, 1947 the General Assembly of the United Nations endorsed the UNSCOP's majority recommendation and voted for the partition of Palestine into an Arab and a Jewish state, the Arab community in Palestine and its leadership were totally unprepared to cope with the political and military challenges that were introduced by that resolution. The article examines the reasons for that state of affairs: the internal development within Arab society in Palestine its inter-relations with the neighbouring Arab countries and its attitude towards the Jewish community. Is also studies the scope of the Palestine Arab political and military effort and the way it had functioned in 1947/48 in spite of the lack of preparation. (DÜI-Asd)

Examines the role of extracurricular activities in predicting adult political behavior, controlling for personality characteristics & political attitudes that potentially select people into both extracurricular & political participation, using data from the senior cohort of the High School & Beyond Survey (begun in 1980). Logistic regression models are employed to predict voting (N = 6,353 respondents [Rs]), working for a political campaign (N = 6,342 Rs), donating money to a campaign (N = 6,339 Rs), & attending a political gathering (N = 6,346 Rs). Also explored is the issue of measurement error in the indicators for personality characteristics & political attitudes. Instrumental extracurricular activities, eg, student government, positively predict political involvement in early adulthood, net of self-efficacy, sociability, political interest, political awareness, & community leadership attitudes. Personality traits & political attitudes only partially account for the association between extracurricular activities & some forms of political participation in adulthood, indicating that extracurricular participation does play a role in developing political engagement. 1 Table, 20 References.
