This article argues that proliferation of prefixes like 'neo' and 'post' that adorn conventional 'isms' have cast a long shadow on the contemporary relevance of traditional political ideologies. Suggesting that there is, indeed, something new about today's political belief systems, the essay draws on the concept of 'social imaginaries' to make sense of the changing nature of the contemporary ideological landscape. The core thesis presented here is that today's ideologies are increasingly translating the rising global imaginary into competing political programs and agendas. But these subjective dynamics of denationalization at the heart of globalization have not yet dispensed with the declining national imaginary. The twenty-first century promises to be an ideational interregnum in which both the global and national stimulate people's deep-seated understandings of community. Suggesting a new classification scheme dividing contemporary political ideologies into 'market globalism', 'justice globalism', and 'jihadist globalism', the article ends with a brief assessment of the main ideological features of justice globalism.

Almost 40 years ago, evidence from large studies of adult twins and their relatives suggested that between 30 and 60 % of the variance in social and political attitudes could be explained by genetic influences. However, these findings have not been widely accepted or incorporated into the dominant paradigms that explain the etiology of political ideology. This has been attributed in part to measurement and sample limitations, as well the relative absence of molecular genetic studies. Here we present results from original analyses of a combined sample of over 12,000 twins pairs, ascertained from nine different studies conducted in five democracies, sampled over the course of four decades. We provide evidence that genetic factors play a role in the formation of political ideology, regardless of how ideology is measured, the era, or the population sampled. The only exception is a question that explicitly uses the phrase "Left–Right". We then present results from one of the first genome-wide association studies on political ideology using data from three samples: a 1990 Australian sample involving 6,894 individuals from 3,516 families; a 2008 Australian sample of 1,160 related individuals from 635 families and a 2010 Swedish sample involving 3,334 individuals from 2,607 families. No polymorphisms reached genome-wide significance in the meta-analysis. The combined evidence suggests that political ideology constitutes a fundamental aspect of one's genetically informed psychological disposition, but as Fisher proposed long ago, genetic influences on complex traits will be composed of thousands of markers of very small effects and it will require extremely large samples to have enough power in order to identify specific polymorphisms related to complex social traits. ; Nature, nurture, and political orientations

On September 11th ; 2001 the world changed when the USA were attacked by Islamist terrorists who killed more than 3000 people and destroyed several symbols of US-American power. These events demonstrated how substantive the threat of Islamist terrorism really was ; consequently causing fear and terror among millions of people in the Western World. A decade later ; also due to repeated terror attacks and attempts around the world ; this perception of threat is still present. My dissertation therefore deals with the consequences of this perceived terrorist threat ; two studies focus on consequences for Muslims in the Western World while another study analyzes the effect on political ideologies of individuals.

El artículo analiza los vínculos entre el cambio social y la comunicación pública en el pensamiento de John Arbuthnot, Thomas Jefferson y Karl Marx, autores que se encuentran en el origen de las tres ideologías políticas características de la modernidad: conservadora, reformista y revolucionaria, respectivamente. Se pone de relieve su posición frente al cambio, su proyecto de sociedad y los actores sociales protagonistas, todo ello en relación con el papel que otorgan a la comunicación en dichos procesos. ; This article analyses the links between social change and public communication in the thought of John Arbuthnot, Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, authors who are at the origin of the three political ideologies characteristic of modernity: conservative, reformist and revolutionary, respectively. It highlights their stance on change, their social project and the leading social actors they identify, all in relation to the role granted to communication in these processes.
