In this essay I revisit and expand upon George Smith's landmark article, "Political Activist as Ethnographer" (1990). Political activist ethnography (PAE) is a specialized form of institutional ethnography (IE) that has not received nearly enough attention in the twenty years since the original publication of Smith's article. In an effort to revisit and bolster this research approach, I provide an overview of IE/PAE and critically engage with three recent commentaries on PAE, and along the way I offer a novel interpretation of this approach as well as an example of its application from my own ongoing research.

The focus is on the interaction between exposure to daily radio & TV newscasts & the pol'al att's of members of the John Birch Society (JBS) & the Amer's for Democratic Action (ADA). A 'newscast avoidance' hypothesis is presented: pol'al activists' attentiveness to daily newscasts is directly related to their degree of satisfaction with the pol'al developments reported there. A 2nd hypothesis is that TV news coverage is more likely to be avoided than radio newscasts. The levels of attentiveness of 647 John Birchers to TV & 645 of them to radio, & those of 767 ADA to TV & 764 of them to radio were surveyed during the height of the 1964 presidential campaign. Among both groups, daily attentiveness to TV newscasts declined dramatically as dissatisfaction with federal policy increased. Attentiveness to radio newscasts declined less regularly with decreasing satisfaction, & with the more ambivalent R's (those in the middle satisfaction categories), it actually rose. The hyp's were supported by rank orders Y's between 7 levels of satisfaction & 4 levels of attentiveness. The hyp'ed r was strongest among JBS TV watchers (p(.001), declined in strength among ADA TV viewers (p(.01) & radio listeners (p(.05), & trailed off to non-signif among the JBS radio audience, indicating the ameliorative effects of right-wing interpretations of radio news on JBS, but not on ADA, members. These Y's are weaker among women, the middle-aged, & leaders in both org's. The effects of educ & occup are less clear. The degree of pol'al activity among both memberships was also found inversely related to rate of newscast attentiveness, with the exception of the JBS radio newscast audience, where activity & attentiveness were directly related. This suggests that network TV newscasts serve to moderate the att's & activity of both memberships. 2 Tables. M. Maxfield.

The nature of policy differences between political strata are examined with survey data from 1952 to 1976. In identifying policy biases, one must consider the interaction between issue area, time period, and partisan grouping. Prior to 1966, a conservative bias on do mestic economic issues existed among the more active, due to the conservative bias of the higher SES and hyperactivity among conservative Republicans. After 1966, no consistent bias on domestic economic issues existed among the more active, due to hyperactivity among liberal Democrats as well as conservative Republicans. After 1966 a definite liberal bias existed among activists on black rights and social-cultural issues, because of the greater liberalism of the more educated, and hyperactivity among Democratic liberals. Foreign affairs patterns are more complex, though there is usually an inter nationalist bias among activists, due to the greater internationalism of the more educated.

Ernesto Laclau was the philosopher whose theoretical intervention made a difference: it opened a whole path to a new kind of emancipationist thought that reoriented the political leftist position. His text, written together with Chantal Mouffe –Hegemony and Socialist Strategy. Towards a Radical Democratic Politics first published in English in 1985–, gave birth to what has been known as Post-Marxism. Hegemony was crucial for the left because it was against the overwhelming conservative current which was delighted celebrating the failure of the socialist project and with it the unsuccessfulness of the Marxist theory. In an enormous gesture –that could be interpreted as a work over their Marxist heritage– they deconstruted Marxist theory in such a vast way that they ended up disintegrating its foundations. However, they persisted in the idea of social change and antagonism but this time without any possibility of reaching a dialectical resolution. ; Fil: Biglieri, Paula Andrea.
