Die Literatur zur wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Reformpolitik hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten ausgiebig mit der Frage beschäftigt, welche Parteien sozialstaatliche Kürzungspolitik betreiben. Während Paul Piersons Pionierstudie zu den "New Politics of the Welfare State" nahelegt, dass die Unterschiede zwischen den Parteien verschwinden, haben andere Arbeiten Anzeichen für die Persistenz von "old politics" gefunden – also den traditionellen Befund, wonach sozialdemokratische Regierungen den Sozialstaat ausbauen, oder zumindest weniger stark zurückbauen als konservative Parteien. "The literature on interest group politics in the European Union has come of age. The last ten years we have seen a remarkable shift from a literature consisting of mainly empirics driven studies that remained detached from sophisticated conceptual reflection, to a firmly theory-informed field of empirical political science. The study of EU interest group politics has become more professionalised, as researchers have moved away from studies that had their merits on their own but often suffered from theoretical grandstanding or idiosyncratic topics and/or sui generis explanations, to studies that link theoretical and conceptual development with sound empirical hypothesis testing. The reason for this transformation is to be sought in changes in the discipline of political science and adjacent disciplines, but certainly just as well in the transformation of European politics with its decline of electoral party politics and the migration of the 'authoritative allocation of values' into policy networks and negotiation systems in which interest groups and civil society organisations assume prominent positions." "Homosexuality Under Socialism in the German Democratic Republic" published on by Oxford University Press.

The "perennial problem of recruitment" of women candidates for public office is examined in this chapter. The author argues for increased attention to the relationship between involvement in electoral politics, & involvement in social & political organizations. Three types of political recruitment are developed & compared with the literature on women's participation in social movements & civic organizations. This comparison suggests that research should re-conceptualize recruitment as an ongoing process. Further analysis examines the role of identity politics, opportunity structures & the social construction of reality, & gender norms on the recruitment of women into politics. The author concludes that research has only portrayed a partial picture of women's political recruitment, & proposes four research strategies that would recognize the multidimensional role of women in politics. Sanabel Abdelrahman holds a Ph.D. in Arabic Studies, focusing on magical realism in Palestinian literature, from Philipps-Universität Marburg. She completed her BA and MA at the University of Toronto's Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. She is a Postdoctoral Fellow at EUME at the Forum Transregionale Studien 2023/2024 in Berlin. Sanabel co-founded the Berlin-based Nidalat initiative for teaching about Palestine and is co-editor of the FUNNY POLITICS publication. She is a bilingual writer of essays critiquing art and literature as well as fiction. She is interested in contemporary art and film.

If there is one thing the right and left seem to agree on it's that money distorts our politics. It allows the rich to shape policy, choose who gets elected, and escape consequences. But what if this common belief isn't as true as you think?

On our second live episode, we look back to famous paper in the political science literature, "Why Is There so Little Money in U.S. Politics?" by Stephen Ansolabehere, John Figueiredo and James Snyder. Their provocative paper asks an often-overlooked question: if political money is so effective, why isn't there more of it?

The chapter defines & distinguishes foreign policy analysis & international politics, & discusses their origins & development as subfields. Next, the impact of constructivism on the areas, while not always acknowledged as such, is examined. Constructivism contributes to theoretical dimensions of structure, agency, rationality, institutions, & identity. Tables illustrate the application of key concepts. Examines the role of the media in the global era of international politics & its impact on international relations from two directions: (1) the limitations of current international understanding of the mass media & (2) empirical research findings on the role of the media from two events in 1991 -- the Gulf War & the Kurdish refugee crises. This approach is then applied to the 1999 conflict in Kosovo to point out issues of war & peace in the new circumstances of state relations. Five main issues are considered to overcome the limitations of the literature on the media in the Gulf War: (1) Domestic & interstate politics within global politics are increasing connections; (2) Global politics are mediated in a somewhat common framework; (3) Global media spaces are contested by many social actors & by journalists of differing ideologies; (4) Media is a location of civil society on both national & global levels; & (5) The dynamics of film, commentary & text generate political impact. Media coverage was instrumental in gaining Western intervention in the Kurdish revolt after the Gulf War & in speeding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization liberation of Kosovar refugees. L. A. It is argued that changes in the definitions & manifestations of masculinity in contemporary gender relations must be analyzed from a global perspective to understand transnational business & political relations. A survey of the management literature, business journalism, & corporate self-promotion materials reveals the perpetuation of a hegemonic form of masculinity in the current world order, called here a "transnational business masculinity," that continues to dominate international trade, investment, & communication relations. Contributions of this masculinity to global masculinity politics are described. The potential for small-scale movements at the national, regional, & local levels to create international linkages designed to analyze & challenge this masculine-dominated world order & implement a greater plurality of gender forms in business & politics is deemed promising. 20 References. Alessia Carnevale holds a PhD in Civilizations of Asia and Africa from Sapienza University of Rome. Her doctoral thesis deals with Tunisian counter-culture and the 'committed song' of the 1970s-1980s. She previously graduated in Comparative Literatures and Cultures from the University of Naples l'Orientale. Her research explores the relations between culture and politics, issues of collective memories and (counter)narratives, and grassroots/top-down interventions in the cultural field.

Das Verhältnis Medien und Politik wird unter dem Aspekt der Interaktion von Politikern, Journalisten und Öffentlichkeitsarbeitern diskutiert. Um einen Überblick über den Stand der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema zu erhalten, wird die einschlägige Literatur vorgestellt. Die systematische Bestandsaufnahme basiert auf einem differenzierten Politikbegriff, mit dem der politische Stellenwert von Medien auf drei Dimensionen bestimmt werden kann: (1) die polity-Ebene, d.h. die institutionelle Verankerung von Medien (u.a. Meinungs- und Informationsfreiheit), (2) die politics-Ebene, u.a. die Rolle der Medien im politischen Kräfteverhältnis (u.a. Parteien, Medien und Wahlkampf) und (3) die policy-Ebene. Die dritte Dimension wird an Einzelfallstudien wie der politischen Kommunikation in den USA und einer Expertenbefragung ("Hamburg-Studie") von Politikern, Journalisten und Öffentlichkeitsarbeitern beschrieben.(BM)

The recent crisis in the Israel and Palestine conflict has added fuel to the already heated debate over free speech in our politics and on college campuses. Does the scientific literature having anything to tell us about the health of public discourse in these domains?

A recent paper by Harvard Ph.D. candidate Yihong Huang titled "Breaking the Spiral of Silence" holds some answers. It looks at how the attention we pay, or don't pay, to who stays silent in a debate can exacerbate self-censorship.
