Abstract: Armenia and Europe: Foreign Aid and Environmental Politics in the Post-Soviet Caucasus Lene Wetteland (Norwegian Helsinki Committee) reviews Armenia and Europe: Foreign Aid and Environmental Politics in the Post-Soviet Caucasus by Dr. Pål Wilter Skedsmo. The book is a revised version of his 2017 PhD thesis in Social Anthropology. Skedsmo uses his personal experience from a project on environmental rights in Armenia in the early 2010s and Armenian civil society's application of the Aarhus Convention as case studies to discuss the issue of Europeanization of Armenia in this context.
Abstract: Post Post-Soviet, style and rebellion: Symbolism and subversive nationalism in Gosha Rubchinskiy's 'new Russia'This article explores the resonance enjoyed by streetwear designer Gosha Rubchinskiy among young Russians, and the extensive network that has emerged under his wings and refers to itself as 'the new Russia'. Analysis of Rubchinskiy's work, with Dick Hebdige's semiotic approach as the epistemological context, supplemented by insights from Simon Reynolds, Michel Foucault and Michel Maffesoli, reveals a continuous deconstruction of the Russian regime's hegemonic narrative of Russianness – so-called 'Putinism'. At the same time, Rubchinskiy constructs a countercultural form of Russian national belonging, one with room to accommodate those who feel alienated by mainstream Russian nationalism. From a social science perspective, a countercultural inclusive nation-building project is in itself a paradox – so how are we to understand Gosha Rubchinskiy's 'new Russia'?

Guter Rath an die Völker Europens bei der Nothwendigkeit, die Regierungsgrundsätze überall zu verändern (Londyn, 1792) - niemieckojezyczny przekład pierwszej części eseju politycznego Advice to the Privileged Orders in the Several States of Europe Resulting from the Necessity and Propriety of a General Revolution in the Principle of Government, którego autorem jest amerykański pisarz, poeta, publicysta, prawnik, dyplomata i myśliciel Joel Barlow (1754-1812). Joel Barlow to jeden z twórców amerykańskiej poezji. Już w roku ukończenia Yale opublikował swój pierwszy poemat "The Prospect of Peace", w którym piętnował niewolnictwo. Z kolei w wydanym w 1787 roku dziewięciotomowym poemacie alegorycznym "The Vision of Columbus" wieszczył wizję przyszłej wielkiej Ameryki i ogólnoludzkiego braterstwa. W 1788 roku wybrał się do Francji, gdzie żywo zainteresował się ideami republikańskimi, by w rezultacie wziąć udział w Rewolucji Francuskiej. W 1791, za pośrednictwem Louisa Littepage'a, skierował list do Stanisława Augusta Poniatowskiego. W korespondencji tej chwalił dzieło Konstytucji 3 maja i wspominał udział Tadeusza Kościuszki w wojnie o niepodległość Stanów Zjednoczonych. W 1792 roku, z inspiracji swojego przyjaciela Thomasa Paine'a, napisał i opublikował w Anglii niniejszy, radykalny traktat polityczny Advice to the Privileged Orders in the Several States of Europe…( Przestroga ku rozwadze stanom uprzywilejowanym w różnych krajach europejskich…), w którym rozwija tezę, że zadaniem państwa jest strzeżenie dobra wspólnego wszystkich klas społecznych, a nie jedynie klas uprzywilejowanych. W 1793 roku ukazał się w New York Magazine utwór The Hasty-Pudding. A poem in three cantos, do dzisiaj jeden z najbardziej znanych utworów wczesnej poezji amerykańskiej. Abstract: Democratic Innovations in Central and Eastern EuropeAccording to Elisabeth Bakke's (University of Olso) review of Democratic Innovations in Central and Eastern Europe, Sergiu Gherghina, Joakim Ekman and Olena Podolian have edited a book on 'democratic innovations' in more or less democratic countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Bakke finds that, while several of the contributions are well written and interesting, 'democratic' may not be a particularly precise label in a context where, as it turns out, the 'innovations' do not contribute much to increasing either participation or democracy.
Political Dissent and Democratic Remittances:The Activities of Russian Migrants in Europe, et nyt kvalitativt, etnografisk studie undersøger aktiviteterne hos dem, der udøver systemkritik efter at have forladt Rusland.
Over the past decade, political freedoms in Russia have severely restricted. Faced with the choice between leaving the country or being left without a voice, more and more civil society actors are choosing to conduct their activities abroad. Political Dissent and Democratic Remittances:The Activities of Russian Migrants in Europe is a new qualitative ethnographic study that explores the activities of those who have Russia in order to be able to voice their political dissent.
Reforming Child Welfare in the Post-Soviet Space: Institutional Change in Russia focuses on the efforts of the Russian state in recent years to replace the notorious orphanages with a system for foster care. The anthology examines the practical implementation of the reform from various perspectives: those of the local authorities and NGOs as well as foster parents and foster children, focusing both on the negative side-effects caused by institutional inertia and path dependency, and on more successful aspects of the reform.

Journalists easily find adjectives to describe environmental catastrophes; it is more difficult, however, to ascertain and convey their causes. Why, for example, didn't Soviet, and later Russian, authorities collaborate with Nordic neighbors and manage to put a stop to the sulphur clouds emanating from the eastern side of the Pasvik River? Lars Rowe looks at this question in a systematic and admirably well-documented way and provides answers in his book, Pollution and Atmosphere in Post-Soviet Russia: The Arctic and the Environment.
