This Ph.D. dissertation studies corporate finance and consists of three chapters. The first chapter examines the value of a firm's board political capital by identifying professional and social ties of top executive branch officials and corporate directors in the United States. Using the close 2008 Democratic presidential primaries between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as repeated shocks to board political capital, I find that director network ties to politicians significantly enhance shareholder value. Firms connected to the winning candidate experience a 1.4% higher abnormal return relative to non-winner-connected firms. Further, I show that one channel of value creation is through an improved likelihood of merger completions and higher merger returns. Overall, my study shows that less visible political ties can allow firms to extract significant rents even in a low corruption environment.The second chapter studies how the existence of an important production contract affects the choice of CEO compensation contract. We hypothesize that having major customers raises the costs associated with CEO risk-taking incentives, leading to lower option-based compensation. Using import tariff cuts as exogenous shocks to customer relationships, we find firms with major customers significantly reduce CEO option-based compensation following tariff reductions. We also document that following tariff cuts, the value of these relationships as well as the firm itself significantly decline in response to higher option compensation. Our study provides new insights into how important stakeholders shape executive compensation decisions.The last chapter examines whether shareholder attention improves director incentives. Using exogenous industry shocks to institutional investor portfolios, we find that institutional investor distraction weakens board oversight. Distracted institutions are less likely to discipline ineffective directors using their votes, while directors with poor proxy voting outcomes are less likely to depart. Consequently, independent directors face weaker monitoring incentives and exhibit poor performance. Also, ineffective independent directors are more frequently appointed. Such firms exhibit more earnings management, high unexplained CEO pay, and lower valuation. Overall, our findings suggest that institutional investor attention significantly strengthens director monitoring incentives and board governance.

Background: Mexican law permits syringe purchase and possession without prescription. Nonetheless, people who inject drugs (PWID) frequently report arrest for syringe possession. Extrajudicial arrests not only violate human rights, but also significantly increase the risk of blood-borne infection transmission and other health harms among PWID and police personnel. To better understand how police practices contribute to the PWID risk environment, prior research has primarily examined drug user perspectives and experiences. This study focuses on municipal police officers (MPOs) in Tijuana, Mexico to identify factors associated with self-reported arrests for syringe possession. Methods: Participants were active police officers aged ≥18 years, who completed a self-administered questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to occupational safety, drug laws, and harm reduction strategies. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression was used to identify correlates of recent syringe possession arrest. Results: Among 1044 MPOs, nearly half (47.9%) reported always/sometimes making arrests for syringe possession (previous 6mo). Factors independently associated with more frequent arrest included being male (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 1.62; 95% Confidence Interval [95% CI] =1.04–2.52; working in a district along Tijuana River Canal (where PWID congregate) (AOR = 2.85; 95%CI = 2.16–3.77); having recently experienced a physical altercation with PWID (AOR = 2.83; 95% CI = 2.15–3.74); and having recently referred PWID to social and health services (AOR = 1.97; 95% CI = 1.48–2.61). Conversely, odds were significantly lower among officers reporting knowing that syringe possession is legal (AOR = 0.61; 95% CI = 0.46–0.82). Conclusions: Police and related criminal justice stakeholders (e.g., municipal judges, prosecutors) play a key role in shaping PWID risk environment. Findings highlight the urgent need for structural interventions to reduce extra-judicial syringe possession arrests. Police training, increasing gender and other forms of diversity, and policy reforms at various governmental and institutional levels are necessary to reduce police occupational risks, improve knowledge of drug laws, and facilitate harm reduction strategies that promote human rights and community health. ; Other UBC ; Non UBC ; Reviewed ; Faculty

A recent series of changes in Higher Education in general, and legal education, in particular, are altering the environment in which law teachers in the UK are used to work. This paper will mention two particular initiatives: on the one hand, the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) a Government and market focussed scheme to drive up the standard of teaching and to provide information to students about the best provision of teaching. On the other hand, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) new proposed Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE). The SQE is also entangled in market forces, employability and consumer choices, it pretends to end with the inconsistencies in law degrees and trainings offered at the moment; and to help social mobility in the profession. Both initiatives have been received with opposition by many parties that contend their reasons and data are flawed. In any case, both initiatives are affecting law teachers that as a consequence have lately being faced with new demands by students, employers and university managers. We conclude with the assertion that nowadays in the UK many law teachers are confronted with many pressures, numerous unanswered questions and no space to voice their concerns on a rapidly changing legal education landscape. ; El entorno habitual de los profesores de derecho en el Reino Unido se ha visto afectado recientemente por una serie de cambios. Delirious New Zealand proposes an alternative parliament, one that uses walls and boundaries to navigate authority and architecture. Walls are complex, they can range from a simple form of protection against elemental conditions, through to the reinforcement of borders between two countries with emphasis and polarising effect. Whilst variable, each instance is committed to division, and both are boundaries facilitated by architecture in the form of walls. Through design led research, three phases of investigation are developed across successive scales. Presented as 'Installing Boundaries', 'Housing Politics' and 'Political Infrastructure', each design outcome forms a larger body of work referred to as the design. Shape, Threshold, and Montage are the architectural principles that determine a given walls significance investigated at each scale. These three speculative propositions are not final outcomes for what an alternative parliament should be. Instead, Delirious New Zealand explores architectural boundaries as the material interface between those who govern and those governed. Koolhaas's observations of the Berlin Wall – pre-demise – and his publication 'Delirious New York' highlight the significance of the authority of an architect, and habitational authority in the realisation and reality of architecture. The significance of a given boundary wall must then consider two things. One, the architectural elements that make up the wall itself. Two, the context within which a wall operates - be that social, political, economic etc. This thesis not only examines the design outcomes as being 'about architecture' in the form of the design, but also uses this as a platform to discuss 'concepts of architecture' more broadly. Accordingly, the concept of authority and architecture is discussed throughout the production and presentation of the three scales of investigation. A final critique in the form of a design discussion concludes this thesis, at which point the final act of installing boundaries is undertaken. 'Delirious New Zealand' considers parliament as a programmatic and contextual provocation for the design of architectural boundaries. In doing so, the segregated inhabitants are defined as the politicians and the people. Although political in programme, this thesis is not politically motivated nor intent on acting politically.

Abstract There is no other subject matter at present that has gained critical and universal appeal like sexism and gender issues. The reason for this is obvious. In different parts of the world before now, there were laws and edicts barring women from macro and micro schemes and programmes that had direct and indirect impact on them. Women suffered disenfranchisement, occupational segregation and other forms of marginalization. However, this ideological battle has been fought and won by men and women, who recognise the inherent potential in men and women. At present, there is hardly any position in the world, whether social, political or religious that the female has not occupied. The concern of this paper therefore is that whereas the afore stated may be true, some writers, especially those who claim to defend the interest of the female still go all out to bend historical facts in their narratives in such a manner as to show disaffection with the male gender or totally undermine it. This has given rise to some kind of gender chauvinism where, instead of attacking the system that fails to entrench gender equity, the male is at the centre of their assault. This paper anchors on womanism-Africa"s version of feminism-which recognizes the complementary roles of men and women in the society to analyze Tess Onwueme"s Then She Said it and The Missing Face. It discovers that, much as Onwueme tries to discourage anti female cultures using drama, she deliberately distorts cultural order and historical facts as a result of gender bigotry. This thesis consists of three essays that analyze the impact of public policies on individual labor supply and health outcomes in China. The policies considered in this thesis include migration, public health insurance, and pension policies. Modern microeconometric techniques are applied to study a range of outcomes including female labor supply, informal care provision, and elderly health status. The essays share two key themes: (i) rapid population aging in China is one of the main motivations for the research and (ii) each essay accounts for the strong intergenerational relations in Chinese families and models the impact on several generations.The first essay investigates the effect of adult children's labor migration on the health of their elderly parents in rural China. An instrumental variable strategy is used to account for the potential endogeneity in children's migration decisions. The results show a positive effect of children's migration on elderly parents' health. Children's migration increases their parents' ability to perform activities of daily living and increases their mental health scores.The second essay studies the impact of a new public health insurance policy on women's informal caregiving to older parents and their labor supply. The New Cooperative Medical Scheme has significantly decreased demand for informal care by the elderly, resulting in an increase in the working hours of working-age adult daughters/in-law.The third essay analyzes the effects of parental retirement on women's time allocation, fertility timing, and labor supply through intergenerational time transfer. China's mandatory retirement eligibility age is used as an exogenous variation for retirement. The results show that maternal retirement increases the employment rate of women with children. Women are also more likely to give birth when they anticipate their mother's retirement.Overall, the findings of the thesis provide important directions for further policy reforms in China. The Chinese government should continue to reform the household registration (hukou) system and improve social security programs for rural-urban migrants. Public health care and pensions systems for the rural population should also be improved. Furthermore, childcare services need to be developed if the government wants to increase female labor force participation.

Reform era has generated significant changes that occur in social life, economy, politics and even included in the world of education. Pancasila began to shift during a crisis that resulted in slump in almost all areas of life. Pancasila values that need to be relayed from generation to generation can be through education about Pancasila in college. Pancasila Education in the curriculum is now a course of Pancasila Education in universities. Pancasila education is one way to inculcate a moral person and broad-minded in the life of nation and state. The problem raised in this article is how much the level of knowledge and understanding of Ideology Pancasila among students how the solution to reinforce the Ideology of Pancasila among students. In this study, the primary data obtained by researchers through a list of questions or questionnaire. A list of questions or questionnaire used is based on answering closed a list of questions or questionnaire. From the research obtained the results show that almost all respondents practice value of Pancasila significantly. Permasalahan yang diangkat dalam artikel ini adalah seberapa besar tingkat pengetahuan dan pemahaman Ideologi Pancasila di kalangan mahasiswa bagaimana solusi untuk menguatkan kembali Ideologi Pancasila di kalangan mahasiswa. Dalam penelitian ini, data primer diperoleh peneliti melalui angket atau kuesioner. Angket atau kuesioner yang digunakan adalah berdasarkan cara menjawab yaitu angket atau kuesioner tertutup. Dari penilitian didapatkan hasil yang menunjukan kan bahwa hampir seluruh responden pengamalan nilai nilai Pancasila secara signifikan.

The article was prepared as a part of the A. Mytko's project realized in the Department of Central European Studies of the Institute of Sociology, University of Rzeszów, XII 2017 – V 2018 (The general research topic: PB/SH/IS.VI "Cultural and social changes in the countries of Central Europe in the context of globalization and European integration"). ; The article analyzes the legal and regulatory framework of Ukraine, which confirms the existence in the state of a number of legislative and other normative legal acts aimed at the regulation, protection and development of the domestic information space. At the same time, it is noted that some unsystematic domestic legal policy in the information sphere remains as an important problem, in particular, in view of the fact that some legislative acts are adopted in order to solve tactical tasks, without taking into account strategic orientations and objective Ukrainian conditions. The information sovereignty and security of Ukraine as an internal state aspect of the country's development are analyzed. It has been explored how the use of manipulative technologies, such as spin doctoring, threatens information security and prompts the protection of the information space from interference by foreign countries and the distortion of information. The factors that hinder the development of the information space are distinguished and characterized and the recommendations for the improvement of the information society in condition of information democracy formation are provided. ; W artykule dokonano analizy przestrzeni prawnej Ukrainy w zakresie prawodawczych i innych normatywno-prawnych aktów regulujących obronę i rozwój ojczystego obszaru informacyjnego. Jednocześnie zaznaczono, że ważnym problemem jest pewna chaotyczność ukraińskiej polityki prawnej w informacyjnym polu, w szczególności ze względu na to, że częściowo prawodawcze akty uchwalane są dla rozwiązania taktycznych zadań, bez uwzględnienia strategicznych orientacyjnych punktów i obiektywnych ukraińskich warunków. Przeanalizowano informacyjną suwerenność i bezpieczeństwo Ukrainy, jak i wewnątrzkrajowy aspekt rozwoju kraju. Zbadano, w jaki sposób użycie manipulacyjnych technologii, takich jak spindoktoring, zagraża informacyjnemu bezpieczeństwu i pobudza do obrony informacyjnego obszaru przed ingerencją obcych państw i aberracji informacji. Nazwano i scharakteryzowano czynniki, które przeszkadzają rozwojowi informacyjnego obszaru, i wskazano rekomendacje dla udoskonalenia informacyjnego społeczeństwa pod warunkiem kształtowania się informacyjnej demokracji.

The research objective is to find out the phenomenon, impacts, efforts of the community and thegovernment in dealing with tidal flooding in the city of Semarang, and organizing the material ofthe tidal flood phenomenon in the city of Semarang as a learning resource. The sample area wastaken using a purposive technique, namely the Genuk District, North Semarang, and Tugu. Thesample of the community and the school to test the feasibility of the non-textbook using purposivesampling technique. Data analysis techniques using qualitative descriptive. The results of this studyindicate (1) the total area of Semarang City is 37,370 ha while the total area of threat, vulnerability,capacity, and risk of rob flood is 5,000, 72 ha (2) The impact of rob on the worst built environmentalaspects is the environment becomes 100% dirty, social aspects of population namely material lossesas much as 100%, built environmental aspects that damage road networks and damage to privatevehicles as much as 100% (3) Government efforts to control rob are divided into 3 regions, namelyWest Semarang, Central Semarang, and East Semarang, while , community efforts to deal with robvary according to household economic conditions. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui fenomena, dampak, upaya masyarakat danpemerintah dalam menghadapi banjir rob di Kota Semarang. Sampel wilayah diambilmenggunakan teknik purposive yaitu wilayah Kecamatan Genuk, Semarang Utara, danTugu. Sampel masyarakat dan sekolah untuk menguji kelayakan buku nonteksmenggunakan teknik sampling purposive. Teknik analisis data menggunakan deskriptifkualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan (1) Total luas wilayah Kota Semarang37.370 ha sedangkan total luas ancaman, kerentanan, kapasitas, dan risiko banjir robyaitu 5.000, 72 ha (2) Dampak rob pada aspek lingkungan terbangun terparah yaitulingkungan menjadi kotor sebanyak 100%, aspek sosial kependudukan yaitu kerugianmaterial sebanyak 100%, aspek lingkungan terbangun yaitu merusak jaringan jalan danrusaknya kendaraan milik pribadi sebanyak 100% (3) Upaya pemerintah sebagai upayapengendalian rob dibagi menjadi 3 wilayah yaitu Wilayah Semarang Barat, SemarangTengah, dan Semarang Timur sedangkan, upaya masyarakat menghadapi rob beragamdisesuaikan keadaan perekonomian rumah tangga.

Technological breakthroughs and the interplay of a number of fields, including advanced robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, neurotech, data analytics, blockchain, cloud technology, biotechnology, Internet of Things (IOT), and 3D printing, have ushered in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRe). These various FIRe technologies are already being adopted by Philippine industries, although in varying degrees of diffusion. The extent to which all the potential benefits will be realized from these technologies depends on the country's ability to overcome its capacity to aptly adapt to the global disruptions that are expected to come along with the FIRe. The country needs to focus on establishing a solid basic foundation for sustained learning and on accumulating various types of capital, while progressively and systematically closing the existing technological and knowledge gaps. Both the public and private sectors need to pay attention to the miniscule investment it has been putting in R&D; concomitantly, the Government must have an informed view on how to improve the efficiency of its deployment. Other interrelated measures needed to be able to catch up technologically and benefit from FIRe include: (i) openness to international trade and investment, which can be useful vehicles for faster transfer of innovative ideas and technology; (ii) reduced anti-competition practices and more competition in key industries like ICT; (iii) better educated and more trainable workers and more flexible and less costly labor market regulatory environment; (iv) development of the education and training systems, including both Government and private sectors, that can efficiently and equitably produce malleable human capital; (v) accumulation of other types of complementary capital like institutional, organizational and physical capital; (vi) progressive establishment of a universal social protection system to keep the people secure, especially the poor and vulnerable, in the face expected unprecedented business and employment disruptions; and (vii) more investment in data collection, monitoring, testing and evaluation. The opportunities and challenges are multifaceted and complex. To harness the FIRe, Government as a whole should systematically review and adapt its policies, institutions and development efforts in light of upcoming revolutionary changes.

The economy of the Republic of Srpska is burdened by inherited (structural) issues and a sluggish adjustment of the current economic policy to the contemporary global trends. According to the standards of the WB, IMF and Kuznets, the Republic of Srpska is classified as a small economy. Just like Bosnia and Herzegovina or any other countries of Western Balkans, it too is finalising the transition to a market economy. The Republic of Srpska features insufficient GDP growth rates. Under such circumstances, there is a need for enticement of GDP growth. Consumption (both final and public) as well as all forms of investment affect economic growth, with FDIs having a particularly important role. In most countries, there is a positive correlation between investment and GDP growth. Likewise, there is a positive correlation between GDP growth and final consumption. Therefore, the Republic of Srpska, as well as any other small economy, resorts to attracting investments and increasing final consumption. However, the issue is that public debt maintains its growing trend in most of such transitional economies. This paper contains the quantification of the impact of investments and consumption onto the GDP of the Republic of Srpska. It has been proven that the final consumption and investments affect GDP growth in the Republic of Srpska. Correlation-regression analysis confirmed a positive correlation between the mentioned variables. This development policy affects the continuous growth of public debt and brings the increase in the share of government (public) consumption in total consumption. In addition, it also affects the insufficient efficiency of investments. As a consequence, low productivity and insufficient competitiveness emerge, followed by the occurrence of other economic and social problems. Therefore, the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina need to complete the initiated reforms and expedite their EU integration, modernize and restructure their industry as per the requirements of the global market, reduce the costs of public institutions and increase their overall competitiveness.

The emergence of the discourse of business ethics thought was encouraged by business reality who ignore moral or moral values. From some parts, business is human economic activity that looking for profit only. Therefore, anything methods may be used to achieve that goal. The moral aspect of business competition, is considered an obstacle to success. In other side, business activity intended to seek the biggest profit, while the moral principles "limiting" business activity. Competition in the business world is capital strength competiton. Businessmen with big capital try to enlarge the reach of his business, so that small businessmen (small financier) are getting dragged. Similarly collusion practice, corruption, and nepotism (KKN) have played an important role in theat process. A prolonged monetary crisis in Indonesia, in fact can't be released from the process of such economic activity, namely the depletion of moral values in its activitiess. Contrast with first group, the second group argues that business can be united with ethics. These circles reasoned that ethics are rational reasons for all human actions in all aspects of life, business aspects are no exception. U svom djelu Zatvorena trgovačka država iz 1800. godine, njemački filozof Johann Gottlieb Fichte zagovara ekonomsku autarkiju kao radikalan oblik protekcionizma, dok 1840. njemačko-američki ekonomist Friedrich List izdaje »bibliju protekcionizma«, djelo Nacionalni sustav političke ekonomije u kojem se suprotstavlja učenju Adama Smitha o važnosti slobodne trgovine i međunarodne razmjene. Pitanje otvorene ili zatvorene privrede iznimno je aktualno s obzirom na to da su globalizacijski procesi rezultirali rastućim nejednakostima i drugim anomalijama te se, kao reakcija, ponovno javljaju, ako su ikad i nestale, snažne protekcionističke prakse. U radu će se pokušati odgovoriti na pitanje je li globalni kapitalizam nužno suprotstavljen ekonomskom nacionalizmu te koju poziciju u toj opreci danas zauzimaju lijeve i desne političke opcije. Naime, umjesto lijeva ili desna, sve češće može se čuti da je neka stranka sistemska ili prosvjedna, pri čemu se tzv. sistemskima predbacuje da žele zadržati status quo u provođenju neoliberalne agende, dok prosvjedne često klize u populizme i nacionalizme. ; Johann Gottlieb Fichte in his work The Closed Commercial State (1800) argued for economic autarky as the next reform of protectionism. German-American economist Friedrich List published The National System of Political Economy (1840) which is considered to be the "Bible of protectionism". List was the opponent of Adam Smith's theses on the importance of free trade and international market. The advocate in a shift from open to closed economy is actual in the globalized world, which is determined by growing inequality and other social and political anomalies. Protectionism is imposed as a possible response to the discontents of globalization. The paper attempts to answer if there is a link between global capitalism and economic nationalism, and how are left and right political parties related to that possible link. Recently, in the days of political dissatisfaction, the alternative between left and right positions is replaced by the opposition between system and anti-system or protest parties. While system parties are criticized for keeping a status quo of neoliberal agenda, protest parties slide into nationalism and populism.

The development of modern thought in Islam, is a distinct dynamism in the intellectual space, which is never discussed, because the development of this thought is the intellectual muddle of the earlier Islamic thinkers, which is then passed on to the next generation, as the times and the times progress. So when discussing of contemporary Islamic thinkers, it would seem odd to forget the figure of Abdullah Ahmed Al-Na'im, who allegedly included a rare thinker and a scholarly dedication to be reckoned with in the contemporary world of contemplation. Which not only fathers on the matter of worship mahdhoh, ethics, etc. However, he is an activist who possesses a high degree of popular loyalty without prejudice to his criticism of political, legal and governmental matters. This is proven through affilia-tion in human rights institutions, although the figure of Ahmed Al-Na'im is also a brilliant academic figure. Sharia always has a bright future in the public life of Islamic soci-ety because it can play a role in preparing the generations for the life of society, fostering institutions and social relations and so forth. Sharia will continue to play an important role in shaping and developing ethical norms and values that can be reflected in public legislation and policies through a democratic political process. Muslims everywhere, whether as majority or minority, are required to practice Islamic sharia as part of their religious obligations. But according to the author the principles or rules of sharia cannot be applied and applied formally by the state as law and public policy only for the reason that the principles and rules are part of sharia. In addition, the main target of this book is Muslims everywhere, but not monolithic, remarkable, or static categories of readers. Intellectual and professional Muslims, who tend to be the ruling elite and opinion-maker in their society, are largely shaped by the European style of education, which allows them to appreciate philosophical concepts and terms that may be unknown to those educated in traditional Islamic schools (madrasah).

AbstractThe amount of land that remains is not proportional to the needs of the physical development of land for growing along with the increasing population. This condition resulted in the incidence of social conflict. Communities tend to be unwilling to let go of land that it owns for infrastructure development under the pretext of price set by the Government is too low. Land Bank can be one alternative procurement ground nirkonflik that can be applied to overcome the crisis in infrastructure development. By using the methods of normative legal research, this research aims to analyze the concept of a land bank with the statute approach, a conceptual approach, and comparative approach. With the summary that the construction of the law setting the land bank as an attempt to realize the asset management within State land can be achieved by establishing rules concerning the level land bank legislation. The values of Justice, legal certainty and legal expediency in organizing land bank should be included in the basis and legal norms on the charge of draft legislation that will be compiled. AbstrakJumlah tanah yang tetap tidak sebanding dengan kebutuhan tanah untuk pembangunan fisik yang terus meningkat seiring dengan bertambahnya jumlah penduduk. Kondisi ini mengakibatkan timbulnya konflik sosial. Masyarakat cenderung tidak mau melepaskan tanah yang dimilikinya untuk pembangunan infrastruktur dengan dalih harga yang ditetapkan oleh pemerintah terlalu rendah. Bank tanah dapat menjadi salah satu alternatif pengadaan tanah nirkonflik yang dapat diterapkan untuk mengatasi krisis tanah dalam pembangunan infrastruktur. Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian hukum normatif, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konsep bank tanah dengan pendekatan peraturan perundang-undangan (statute approach), pendekatan konseptual (conceptual approach), dan pendekatan perbandingan (comparative approach). Dengan simpulan bahwa konstruksi hukum pengaturan bank tanah sebagai upaya untuk mewujudkan pengelolaan aset tanah negara berkeadilan dapat tercapai dengan membentuk aturan mengenai bank tanah yang setingkat undang-undang. Nilai-nilai keadilan, kepastian hukum dan kemanfaatan hukum dalam penyelenggaraan bank tanah harus dimasukkan dalam asas dan norma hukum pada muatan rancangan undang-undang yang akan disusun.
