Francisco Fernández de la Cueva Enríquez (1666-1733) noble de origen español, Virrey número treinta y cuatro de la Nueva España (1702-1710), heredero de la casa de Albuquerque, nieto de Francisco Fernández de la Cueva (1619-1676) quien cuarenta años antes también había ostentado el cargo de Virrey de la Nueva España durante el periodo de 1653 a 1660. En 1684 se casó con Juana de la Cerda y Aragón, en 1690 desempeñó el cargo de General de Granada y de las costas de Andalucía. Toma el cargo de Virrey de la Nueva España y capitán general en 1702 en medio de la guerra de sucesión española 1701-1713, cuestión que le sumaría la tarea de conservar la lealtad del reino. Así, Cueva pudo negociar donativos y contribuciones para la causa del rey quien, agradecido, le otorgó el Toisón de Oro. El presente sermón se inscribe como parte de los festejos y recibimiento del nuevo virrey hechos en la ciudad de Puebla de los Ángeles en un tono público y político. A lo largo del documento se encuentran pormenores de su vida, se exaltan sus virtudes, se alude a la nobleza de su estirpe y a la tradición militar de su familia. La celebración se consagró en nombre de la Virgen de la Purísima Concepción. El predicador advierte que el argumento y cuerpo del texto, al que llama oración prosphonema, se divide en tres partes: Dedica la primera en alabanza y agradecimiento al Rey, pues fue quien designó a Francisco Fernández de la Cueva a su nuevo puesto. Durante la segunda exalta las virtudes del virrey entrante comenzando con su noble estirpe, las victorias de su familia y lo justo de su persona, dirigiéndose a él como "heroyco Príncipe" o "Príncipe con rectitud de justo". La tercera parte sigue la línea de la exhortación al nuevo gobernante para la correcta ejecución de su cargo conforme a los designios del Rey. Entre ellos destaca el desempeñarse con justicia y bajo la veneración de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. El epílogo cierra la prédica con esperanza y deseos de gloria, felicidad y gracia.
