At least 5 million people die each year from injuries, and about half the deaths in the 10-24 age group are accountable to them. This is a major health problem for which a number of strategies for prevention and control can be developed. This book presents a series of the plenary and state-of-the-art presentations from the 5th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Control. There is a focus on transportation, workplace, sport and leisure, and domestic sectors, and an exploration of the legal, medical, environmental, safety and governmental issues which play a part in the subject.Practitioner

Scientific motivation to publish this book comes from the increased interest in the study of toxoplasmosis, showed all over the world. Though the Toxoplasma gondii infection was first discovered in 1908, toxoplasmosis remains a today's research topic, a realm of questions and dilemmas that interest both the veterinarians and the human doctors. Studies in the field are directed to the epidemiology of the disease, the sources of infection, epidemiological chains, being underlined the important feature in the transmission of this parasite: the ability to pass from one intermediate host to another intermediate host without passing through the final host - felids. An increased prevalence of toxoplasmosis in humans and animals, as well as the difficulty of coproscopic diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in cats, expensive serological examinations in both animals and humans, lack of diagnostic methods accessible to veterinarians in slaughterhouses, cultural and culinary differences of human patients, which can influence the prevalence of the disease, motivate the scientific and practical importance of the proposed book and reveal the importance of this topic for animal and human health. So, the proposed book will contain informations regarding the etiology and history of Toxoplasma gondii infection and also the parasite's morphology and biology. This work will contain a very detailed epidemiology of the toxoplasmosis from all over the world and for all species of animals. This chapter will include also personal findings of the authors about the Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in domestic animals from Romania. In the last part of the book we will present the main methods for toxoplasma diagnosis. At the end of the book we will synthesize the main routes for T. gondii infection and the recommendations for reducing toxoplasmosis seroprevalence.

Surveillance for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Japan started in September 1984 and in February 1987 was extended to seropositive carriers of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibodies. A total of 2,000 hospitals and clinics throughout the country have actively participated in the surveillance. An educational program for health care workers, including physicians, was initiated in July 1985 by issuing a series of government memoranda and distributing pamphlets and posters. Counseling programs for people concerned about AIDS and laboratory support to provide screening services have been developed. Laboratories that can also perform confirmatory tests will be established shortly. The screening of all donated blood was established in November 1986.

Infectious diseases are our business. We have to be vigilant, efficient and effective, because a lot depends on us. European governments understand that as infectious diseases know no borders, there is a constant need for surveillance and assessment of risks to provide a strong and reliable line of defence for all Europeans. Our scientific work is closely linked with that of Health Ministries, national public health institutes, public health researchers, managers and practitioners in every country in Europe, with whom we are in daily contact, exchanging information, providing analysis, guidance and technical support. Protecting Europe from infectious diseases is not a chance benefit. ECDC has been built on well-coordinated public health alert and response systems, rigorous independent scientific evidence and analysis, the capacity to take quick and decisive action and communication expertise to deliver reliable information rapidly to those who need it. All ECDC's central and field operations are organised to support and strengthen these vital public health functions, aiming to add value to country-led responses, particularly in times of financial constraint, and thus help save lives. ECDC is a scientific and technical agency, not a political body. It is our role to let the European Commission, the European Parliament and national health policy-makers have the advice and evidence they need to make decisions and take action to protect health. Working here is very special. Not only because we are on the front line of prevention and control of infectious diseases in Europe, but because of the enthusiasm, diversity and professionalism of our team. ECDC is unique. We are proud to be at the hub of Europe's vast network of dedicated public health specialists, scientists, microbiologists and epidemiologists – over 10 000 in number – who work with us and other partners, like WHO, to protect people from infectious disease threats. We work hard to fine-tune these efforts so as to be worthy of Europe's continued trust and support. With this brochure I invite you to learn more about how we work, what we do and what we offer. ; N/A
