A variational principle for hydromagnetic flows
In: Bulletin de la Classe des sciences, Band 53, Heft 1, S. 851-860
A variational principle is developed for hydromagnetic flows using the concept of local potential introduced by Glansdorff and Prigogine. As an example, the problem of flow of a viscous incompressible conducting fluid between two parallel plates with a transverse applied magnetic field is considered. A comparison between the exact and the approximate solutions is made.

Law has hardly influenced the language problem in Switzerland; it merely recognized an existing situation when the gov admitted French, German & Italian as nat'l languages; in 1938, romansch was added, though it was not an official language. But plurilingualism is valid only on the federal level. In the cantons, the regional language prevails. Jurisprudence has decreed that all 3 languages are official; federal authorities speak in their own language, though only French & German are used in Assembly debates. Similarly, in the admin, bilingualism prevails. In differentiating nat'l from official languages, Switzerland wished to recognize the romansch community as an essential element of the state, having a certain autonomy, & which participates in federal life & respects certain rules in the linguistic relations among cantons. A state-area principle for (magnetic) condensation processes
In: Bulletin de la Classe des sciences, Band 53, Heft 1, S. 1019-1042
Phase transitions involving metastable states can be considered as branching processes in phase space. This point of view has led to the development of a state-area principle which permits the direct calculation of the relative probabilities of populating the metastable states. Auxiliary parameters such as fictive or effective temperatures are not required in this approach. A simple bistable model exhibiting both ferro and antiferromagnetic features has been used to check the application of the state-area principle.
An interesting byproduct of this work is a simple theoretical demonstration of the origin of symmetry-breaking magnetic interactions.
