Je mehr über den Umfang bekannt wird, in dem die National Security Agency und ihre Partner die Kommunikation und das Internetverhalten von Menschen überwachen, desto deutlicher wird auch in den USA die Kritik an den amerikanischen Nachrichtendiensten. Dennoch können die Europäer nicht darauf setzen, dass die USA ihre Überwachungspraxis korrigieren. Vielmehr sollten sie selbst aktiv werden. Wer von den USA Aufklärung fordert und den Datenschutz stärken möchte, sollte einen europäischen Ansatz verfolgen. Denn die Erfolgsaussichten für nationalstaatliches Handeln sind schlecht. Voraussetzung ist jedoch ein offener Umgang der Europäer mit der Rolle der Datenüberwachung ihrer eigenen Nachrichtendienste. (Autorenreferat)
'Der Artikel vertritt die These, dass die Nahrungszubereitung durch ihre aktuelle extensive Veröffentlichung in Kochsendungen ihren Charakter als Arbeit zur Befriedigung von Bedürfnissen in Privathaushalten und der Gastronomie verliert und andere Momente in den Vordergrund treten, wie z.B. Unterhaltung, Wettbewerb, voyeuristisches Ereignis etc. Während der feministische wissenschaftliche Diskurs erreicht hat, dass Haushaltsarbeit in den Sozialwissenschaften auf breiter Ebene als 'Arbeit' anerkannt wird und auch politische Diskussionen die wesentliche gesellschaftliche und volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung von Haus- und Familienarbeit hervorheben, klaffen wissenschaftliche sowie politische Diskurse und Realität der Beköstigungsarbeit einerseits und öffentlich-mediale Konstruktionen andererseits erheblich auseinander. Ein überwiegend von Frauen geleisteter Arbeitsbereich wird auf diese Weise marginalisiert.' (Autorenreferat)
<p>本研究目的為探討運用線上學習與反思寫作於大學生性教育的學習,對其經驗與感受。以方便取樣方式選取某科技大學101位學生為研究對象,</p> <p>以國衛院提供之性教育影片進行線上學習,觀看後每人完成反思寫作一篇。以主題分析法進行檢視反思寫作內容。</p> <p>多數大學生對於運用線上學習與反思寫作方式學習性教育採取正向態度,認為對於親密關係之建立有很大幫助。此外,採用線上學習方式可自由選擇較有興趣的影片,可以保有隱私,且能配合自己的作息,還能克服疫情的限制,是非常合適的安排。針對大學生學習後的經驗與感受,文本中出現五個主要的主題包括:安全性行為的重要性、對親密情感的渴求、愛也需要學習、性應該平等與互相尊重、體認與包容性/性別的多樣性。</p> <p>線上學習輔以反思寫作方式對大學生在性教育的學習經驗與感受確實有所助益。建議線上學習影片需適時更新,並搭配最新及時事信息,以符合年輕人的想法。</p> <p> </p><p>The purpose of this study is to explore the use of online learning and reflective writing on the study of sexuality education for college students and their corresponding learning experience and feelings.</p> <p>A total of 101 students from one of the universities of Science and Technology in Taiwan were selected as the research subjects by convenience sampling. The sexuality education videos provided by the National Health Institute were used for online learning. Each participant completed a reflective writing after the online learning. Thematic analysis was used to examine the content and meaning of the reflective writing.</p> <p>Most of the students showed positive attitude toward sexuality education using online learning and reflective writing methods and thought that it was very helpful to the establishment of intimate relationship. Moreover, they expressed that online learning was a very suitable arrangement because they could freely choose videos which were interesting to them, maintain privacy, follow their own time schedules, and at the same time overcome the restrictions of the pandemic of COVID-19. Regarding the students’ learning experience and feelings, five main themes emerge in this paper: the importance of safe sex, the need of intimacy, the necessity to learn love, sex equality and mutual respect, and the recognition and inclusiveness of gender diversity.</p> <p>Online learning supplemented by reflective writing is indeed helpful to college student’s learning experience and feelings in sexuality education. It is recommended that online learning videos need to be updated in a timely manner and matched with the latest current affairs to meet the thinking of young people.</p> <p> </p>
In seinem Essay zum Authentitätsgebot im Big Brother geht der Autor zunächst der historischen Entwicklung der Grenzen zwischen Privatheit und Öffentlichkeit nach. In seinem historischen Rückblick bezieht er sich auf medienhistorische Literatur und insbesondere auf die 1983 erschienene Studie "Verfall und Ende des öffentlichen Lebens. Die Tyrannei der Intimität" des amerikanischen Kulturkritikers R. Sennet. In einem zweiten historischen Exkurs faßt der Autor die Entwicklung der gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung von Authentizität und Aufrichtigkeit als Modi der Selbstdarstellung. Von Typisierungen, ohne die eine Selbstdarstellung nicht möglich ist, werden die Theatralisierungen unterschieden, die sich gleichzeitig an zwei Adressaten richten, den Menschen gegenüber und das Publikum. Betrachtet man die angeforderten Authentizitätsdarstellungen der Container-Bewohner in Big Brother, werden die medial verbreiteten Masken der Authentizität offensichtlich. Wie der von Sennet beschriebene "Public Man" in den wachsenden Großstädten im 18. Jh. durch Masken und Zeichen des Theaters seine Identität den Fremden gegenüber bekundete, sind die Container-Bewohner hinter medialen Masken verborgen. Die Masken ermöglichen ihnen das öffentliche Sprechen über Emotionen, ohne daß das Innerste preisgegeben wird. Von der Tyrannei der Intimität schützen die Masken. (PT)
In dieser Studie wird, ausgehend von Interviews mit Juristinnen und Wirtschaftsprüferinnen, das Konzept der Risikovermeidung genutzt, um zu verstehen, warum und in welcher Weise einige der Frauen sich für eine Tätigkeit in einem staatlichen Arbeitsumfeld entschieden haben: Zusammengefasst spielten für diese Entscheidungen insbesondere wahrgenommene Konflikte zwischen Berufs- und Privatleben, ökonomische Unsicherheiten und der geringere Schutz vor willkürlichen Arbeitgeberentscheidungen im nicht-öffentlichen Sektor als potenzielle Risikofaktoren eine herausgehobene Rolle. Die Studie leistet einen Beitrag zum bisherigen Forschungsstand, indem sie das Konzept der Risikovermeidung bei Arbeitsentscheidungen vor dem Hintergrund des Konfliktes zwischen Berufs- und Privatleben und mit Blick auf spezifische Klassenlagen entfaltet und nachvollziehbar macht, wie Frauen eine solche Präferenz im Falle privilegierter White-Collar-Berufe vollziehen.
Der Essay beschäftigt sich mit der Gattung Autobiografie als Teil von Erinnerungskulturen in Ost- und Westdeutschland. Die literarische Gattung Autobiografie wird aus einer soziologischen Perspektive betrachtet. Während sich für die Literaturwissenschaften die Gattungsfrage aufzulösen scheint, kann festgehalten werden, dass diese nach wie vor in öffentlichen Diskursen funktioniert. Aus diesem Grund sind Autobiografien in politischen und zeitgeschichtlichen Kontexten wirksam und werden als solche wahrgenommen. Der vorgeschlagene Ansatz geht daher davon aus, dass Autobiografien einerseits eine intentionale Form der Sozialkommunikation darstellen, die gerahmt und beeinflusst wird von öffentlichen Erinnerungskulturen, andererseits aber auch auf diese aus einer subjektiven Perspektive einwirkt. Aus dieser Sicht sind Autobiografien keine individuellen oder autonomen, sondern an eine Öffentlichkeit adressierte Lebensgeschichten. Durch diese Öffentlichkeitsadressierungen sind Lebens- und Zeitgeschichte in Autobiografien politisch aufgeladen. Mit anderen Worten: "Das Private wird politisch".
Welcome to the IASSIST Quarterly first issue of 2021 and of volume 45 (IQ 45(1) 2021).
I always find it interesting to learn more about other research areas. Often, I find approaches in less well-known areas can be transformed and transferred to my own areas, or make me aware of problems unwisely ignored hitherto and becoming potentials. In the case of the first article, you will become aware of the connection with linguistics from a data viewpoint. As a search for datasets requires using words of a language it is obvious that linguistic knowledge can be of benefit. However, most is obvious when you think of it - afterwards. Often, it is because you did not think it through - beforehand - that new information surprises you. And this also gives you a good opportunity to thank people who are working in areas you had not thought of - before. The benefits of combining and merging types of data such as linking survey data and social media data are obvious - again! Before you start the journey of joining these types of data, the second article will provide you with valuable information gained from the experience of several projects and exemplified through cases using Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
The first article shows the support for diversity in research areas already in the title: 'A recommendation to the SSH community: take a linguist on board' authored by Jeannine Beeken of UK Data Service at University of Essex (UK). Theories and methods of linguistics are obviously relevant for data services where the search for and retrieval of data collections from vast data archives is an important step in the process towards analysis and findings in data. Beeken starts by introducing us to areas of this important retrieval step that are supported by Natural Language Processing (NLP) that increases findability, with the result that relevant descriptions of data collections are identified through online search. A simple example is that when searching for survey questions concerning 'war' the results will also include those from a search for 'armed conflict'. The development and upkeep of thesauri and language relationships is a huge and valuable task that is itself supported by linguistics and computers, for example by intelligent creation of metadata for studies. Linguistic knowledge is not only relevant for finding data but also valuable for the production of data. Computer linguistics have made great progress for the growing number of studies based on texts and data in the form of interviews. In the article, speech recognition and speech-to-text transcription is mentioned and the resulting interview transcription text can again become the subject of further computer and linguistic analysis.
The second article 'Informed consent for linking survey and social media data - differences between platforms and data types' will prepare you for benefits and obstacles when joining data from surveys and social media. The article is a part of the outcomes of several projects with participation of the authors Johannes Breuer, Tarek Al Baghal, Luke Sloan, Libby Bishop, Dimitra Kondyli, and Apostolos Linardis. The authors are based at GESIS in Germany, Essex University and Cardiff University in the UK, and EKKE in Greece. The article draws on their own projects as well as on specific other projects delivering the examples in the article.
When using self-reporting in research surveys - in this case for the study of social media - the data can prove to be unreliable. On the other hand, when research obtains data directly from the social media platforms the background, attitude, and behaviour variables for individuals are sparse compared to surveys. The obvious solution is to link such data collections. However, the linking requires informed consent. The 'joining of data' and 'informed consent' implies awareness of legal regulations - like GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in Europe - as well as ethical standards and guidelines of relevant institutions. The article discusses these issues and demonstrates them through three studies that used data from Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Furthermore, the regulations and setups for the social platforms have to be well scrutinized. For example, if respondents share their private data, these may also affect the privacy rights of others, and data that are collected via APIs may have special restrictions with regard to data sharing. The appendices of the article contain the full text used in the various projects for explicating the use of data and the conditions in the linking of survey and social media data. In addition to raising general awareness and giving a good overview of problems when using social media data, the article will initiate you into being well prepared, as the cases discussed include many valuable references to pursue if you plan on commencing a project linking social media data with survey data.

Mobile telephony plays a central role in this transition, with adoption rates that surpass even those of the Internet. To what extent does mobile communication lead to changes in family dynamics? On the one hand, mobile communication empowers youth to carry out their social relations 'under the radar' of parental supervision. In the 'old days', kids had to share a domestic landline phone and had less privacy, or had to shut themselves up in their room when on the phone to get privacy. The mobile phone is anytime/anywhere and it a personal object (not shared), so users have much more control over their private relations. Text messaging is an especially effective way of having private communication. Because of all this, young people have more autonomy to live out their social lives as they see fit. On the other hand, the mobile phone also gives parents more control by being able to better keep tabs on their kids and their kids' whereabouts. In some respects, it can actually be considered as an 'umbilical cord' keeping kids accountable to their parents. This is an interesting dichotomy for discussion. To what extent and how does the mobile phone support 'perpetual contact' among social ties? There seems to be a continual flow of communication now, which some refer to as 'perpetual contact'. Follow‐up questions could be: how is this a good thing? Are there negative aspects of perpetual contact? How is the mobile phone used for boundary management (i.e., demarcating in‐group members from out‐group members)? This can be seen in names kept in contact lists, who people text with, whose calls they screen, and even the style or brand of a phone ... some groups of friends get the same types of phones. What are the effects of taking/placing a phone call when interacting with physically co‐present others? What are norms for doing this? How can people mitigate the intrusion? On a related note to the questions above ... to what extent does the mobile phone lead to 'absent presence?' The notion of absent presence refers to being physically present, but socially absent. To what extent is this problematic? To what extent might mobile communication lead to 'tele‐cocooning?' Some are concerned that people are getting so wrapped up in their tight little social networks now, that they are less engaged with others who are weak social ties. If this is true, then it begs the question about whether there are benefits to having weak social ties. Most feel there are benefits, like being exposed to a diversity of perspectives and ideas. With regard to the changing media landscape, where else do we see increased 'personalization' in our uses of traditional mass media? In this sense, 'personalization' can refer to personalized content, interactivity, control, etc.
Research project idea (note this approach can be taken with any of the topics recommended above)Description of the paperMobile communication technology has become a common artifact in public settings, offering a means for social connection for its users and unsolicited melodies, chirps, and half conversations for co‐present others. Because social norms for behavior around others often conflict with those for phone conversations, mobile communication can present as many challenges as it does opportunities for maintaining social order. In class, we will discuss numerous perspectives on this topic, such as absent presence, symbolic fences, front stage‐back‐stage dynamics, and cocooning through mobile media. The purpose of this paper is to conduct an original investigation of the use of mobile communication technology around others. Each student will select a particular aspect of this phenomenon to explore in depth by collecting data first‐hand, analyzing those data, and drawing conclusions to shed new light on this topic. Students may choose to examine mobile communication in a particular setting, compare mobile communication in different social contexts or across different users, examine or compare the use of certain types of mobile technologies, observe reactions of and effects on non‐users of the technology, or select some other such 'angle' for the project that sheds light on this topic.Paper guidelinesYour paper should contain the following sections: (1) An introduction that justifies the importance of your topic and provides a clear explanation of the purpose of the paper, (2) a review of relevant literature/theory/key concepts to frame your particular project followed by specific research questions, (3) a method section explaining how you collected data (observation, interviews, questionnaires, and/or otherwise) and how you analyzed your data, and (4) a discussion section that develops conclusions based on the findings. Each paper should have at least 10 scholarly citations, of which at least half should come from readings other than those assigned for class. Use American Psychological Association (5th edition) to format citations and reference list. Papers should be about 10 pages in length, double‐spaced. In addition to meeting these guidelines, the writing should be clearly organized within each section and (of course) well‐written. Students will present their papers in class at the end of the semester.
