The article discusses Islamist projects promoted by Saudi Arabia and the Qatari-Turkish Alliance to strengthen their positions in Syria. The Saudis are focused on conservative Salafi Islamism, while Qatar and Turkey adhere to the moderate ideology of Islamism Muslim Brotherhood. Since the beginning of the crisis, the struggle between the competing forces has been unfolding within the opposition structures (the Syrian National Council, the National Coalition) and in the theater of operations, where there is a support for certain military formations loyal to 'Pro-Saudi' or 'Pro-Qatari' representatives of the opposition. The struggle of the Qatari-Turkish Alliance and Saudi Arabia has led to a signifi cant weakening of the positions of Qatar and Turkey in the negotiation process, however Doha and Ankara continue to maintain control over numerous armed groups of moderate persuasion.
The article examines the energy cooperation of the South Korea and Persian Gulf oil exporters in the context of development of the military-political situation in the Middle East. The authors reveal the reasons why Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait are the most important oil suppliers for the Republic of Korea since 2011 till present.
Over the past decades, the European gas market has attracted the attention of many extra-regional actors. The geopolitical rivalry for the European gas market intensified after an increase in shale gas production in the United States, which was interested in expanding its supply to Europe. The development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector intensified the struggle for the European gas market. The U.S., Qatar and Algeria, began to take steps to squeeze Russian gas out of Europe. This exacerbated the competition for the gas market in Europe, where LNG has already occupied a certain part. Moreover, in recent years, the U.S. and Qatar have developed ambitious plans aimed at increasing LNG production, expecting in the future to radically change the balance of power on the European market. To this end, the U.S. has launched a campaign against the Russian supplies. In addition, sanctions were imposed on the Nord Stream–2 gas pipeline, which prevented the project from starting operations. Being involved in the geopolitical rivalry between Russia and the United States, the EU countries supported the U.S. course, and proclaimed the policy of reducing dependence on Russian gas. In the long term, they want to give it up completely. This goal was prioritised in the EU gas policy. However, in 2021–2022 this strategy rapidly increased prices on the gas market in Europe, which negatively impacted European economies. Despite the economic losses, the EU did not abandon its course of refusing supplies of hydrocarbon resources from Russia.
The article examines the struggle of the Qatari- Turkish alliance for regional leadership in the Federal Republic of Somalia. The analysis revealed that the foreign policy activity of Turkey and Qatar in Somalia began during the events of the Arab Spring. Ankara and Doha used diplomatic, military and fi nancial instruments to strengthen their infl uence in the country. Moreover, Qatari money played an important role in promoting pro-qatari candidates to power during the 2012 and 2017 presidential elections. However, the eff orts of the Turkish- Qatari alliance to strengthen its position in Somalia have clashed with the interests of the Saudi- Emirati bloc seeking regional dominance. On the other hand, the inability to close the main cooperation with the central government in Somalia forced the UAE to support such autonomous regions as Somaliland, thereby intensifying the destabilization processes in the country.
The following article considers the origins, external and internal factors of the modern crisis in Yemen. It is particularly noted that one of the reasons that Yemen has always been the arena for a clash of interests of the powers due to its strategic position on the sea route connecting Europe with the Indian ocean. It describes in detail how, along with the external threat, North and South Yemen in the second half of the XXth century was torn by internal contradictions. It is noted that after the integration of Yemen in 1990, opposition intensified its activities against the conditions of unification, which led to a new civil war. The article has a strong focus on the fact that in Yemen in the end of twentieth century political factor has been supplemented by religious factor, i.e., the confrontation escalated between the northerners Shia zaidis and the South Sunni. Attention is drawn to the fact that the spread of Wahhabism in Yemen as an ideological and political force, the creation of "al-Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula" has further aggravated the explosive situation in the country. The analysis of the process of transformation of the theological movement of the Houthis-zaidis into a military-political force, which managed in the Wake of the "Arab spring" and in Alliance with the supporters of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, not only to seize power in Sana'a in January 2015, but also to expand its position up to Aden. The particular emphasis has been placed on the fact that since March 2015 the conflict in Yemen has acquired an international character, when the Saudi coalition (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, Sudan and UAE, Egypt) sided with the President in the exile of Abd Rabbo Mansur Hadi and forced the Houthis to retreat from Aden and Bab El-Mandeb Strait by force of arms. It is noted what changes have occurred in the US policy towards the support of the Saudi coalition in recent years. The role of Iran in Yemen and the nature of its relations with the Houthis cause disputes between researchers. Based on the analysis of recent events, it is concluded that the military actions of the Saudi coalition can lead to the elimination of Yemen as a state. The ongoing armed conflict and the futility of attempts at a political solution make the possibility of a peaceful settlement in Yemen problematical.
The Red Sea and the Aden Gulf area, where from time immemorial ancient sailors paved trade routes, and the North-East Africa (the Horn of Africa) are rapidly turning into an important strategic region. It's about ensuring free access to the Red Sea and, therefore, to the Suez Canal, that significantly reduces the delivery time and cost of goods, including energy resources. It facilitates and cheapens the trade between Europe and Asia. However, such a strategically important region is extremely unstable and turbulent. Navigation here is carried out, including along several narrow straits, which have been named as "suffocating" and "shock points" of modern geopolitics. We note a trend towards increasing competition in this once "sleepy" region. Arab countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE are striving to secure their interests here in competition with other Middle Eastern "heavyweights" - Turkey and Iran. Qatar has recently joined the above non-Arab actors. The accelerated dynamics of events leads to changes in the balance of power, which affects politics of non-regional actors - China, the United States and others. This article aims to comprehend the prevailing political realities in the area under consideration, to identify the military-political and trade-economic factors that determine the geostrategic importance of the Red Sea and adjacent territories, to determine the features of relations between the countries of the region, as well as their interaction with non-regional players.
