International audience ; The work of J. R. R. Tolkien has been given new attention by the film versions ofThe Lord of the Rings. It has thus been brought to the notice of an even widerpublic than the novels had won for themselves, no doubt increasing the number ofTolkien readers, but with the drawback that many will remain content with havingseen the screen adaptations. This has entailed some shifts in the reception of Tolkien, which are sometimes very close to misrepresentation, mostly for lack of betterknowledge. Therefore, Tolkien's literary achievement deserves to be examined inthe context of the twentieth-century history of ideas, albeit only to fend off hastyevaluations. It is worth remembering that Tolkien, apart from being a philologist, was also a Roman Catholic author, coming from the cultural background of theOxford Movement. Many of his ideas would earn him a place among the so-called"right-wing anarchists," whose works have in common to be eloquently critical ofsome aspects of modernity. The celebrated X-ray fiber diagram obtained by Rosalind Franklin for the paracrystalline phase of B-DNA is examined at a non technical level. The most prominent features of the intensity distribution in the diagram are reviewed in relation to the corresponding structural properties of the molecule. Optical diffraction experiments (optical trans¬ forms) are performed to reproduce each of several features separately, namely the layer-lines, the maltese cross, the diamond repeats and the missing 4th layer-line. These experiments make use of a single slide (available from the authors on demand) containing a photographic film reduction of four simplified planar models of the DNA backbone which serve as diffraction gratings for the coherent red light of a He-Ne laser or a solid-state laser pointer. No special optics is required. The simulations bring out all of the crucial geometrical parameters of the Watson-Crick double helix. The paper then gives a simple derivation of the formula established by Cochran Crick and Vand (CCV) for the Fourier transform of a helical molecule such as DNA. An application of the CCV theory is made to the computer simulation of wave diffraction by the recently discovered chiral carbon nanotubes which can be described as a collection of regular carbon helices. Computer sim¬ ulated micrographs are compared to observed electron diffractograms of single nanotubes.
Summer of numéro:http://archive-edutice.ccsd.cnrs.fr/edutice-00000861 The teaching and cognitive psychology work creates a new consensus on the nature of the learner and his/her activities. According to J.-M. Albertini (1990), the learner built from his observations and experience a 'personal vision of the world', a representation device from which he gradually approached knowledge, and learned his own knowledge. This makes the pedagogical problems to be addressed more complex. As the learner does not simply need to access new knowledge, he must also integrate it into his spontaneous naïve system, which the expert probably considers to be "wrong". In this sense, our representation of the world is only an incomplete and partial view of reality. At the same time, the learner does not simply build his knowledge but also determines his own learning process. And it is only when knowledge is meaningful for it that it is appropriate and can change its system of representatives. It is in this context that we look for children's representations on new information and communication technologies.
