PurposeIn the last two decades, a proliferation of business process management (BPM) modeling languages, standards and software systems has given rise to much confusion and obstacles to adoption. Since new BPM languages and notation terminologies were not well defined, duplicate features are common. This paper seeks to make sense of the myriad BPM standards, organising them in a classification framework, and to identify key industry trends.Design/methodology/approachAn extensive literature review is conducted and relevant BPM notations, languages and standards are referenced against the proposed BPM Standards Classification Framework, which lists each standard's distinct features, strengths and weaknesses.FindingsThe paper is unaware of any classification of BPM languages. An attempt is made to classify BPM languages, standards and notations into four main groups: execution, interchange, graphical, and diagnosis standards. At the present time, there is a lack of established diagnosis standards. It is hoped that such a classification facilitates the meaningful adoption of BPM languages, standards and notations.Practical implicationsThe paper differentiates BPM standards, thereby resolving common misconceptions; establishes the need for diagnosis standards; identifies the strengths and limitations of current standards; and highlights current knowledge gaps and future trends. Researchers and practitioners may wish to position their work around this review.Originality/valueCurrently, to the best of one's knowledge, such an overview and such an analysis of BPM standards have not so far been undertaken.

10 p. ; International audience ; Cities have a crucial role in groundwater management. The urban pressure tends to cause great impacts on aquifers. This work is a legal study and aims to verify how Brazilian law about water and urban policies promote better integration of groundwater into urban management processes. The methodology used was a qualitative analysis of environment and urban legislation in São Paulo state, Brazil and urban planning legislation edited by municipalities located in the Guarani aquifer recharge area. The lack of a specific national policy which guides state and local actions is a major problem, especially considering that aquifers trespass the local scale. The state policies most of the time are insufficient and have problems in implementation. Without a regulatory model, local policies rely only on public administration's will which tend to be very susceptible to economic pressure. Despite this, watershed-based management tools starts to bring some guidance to urban director plans.

The article deals with issues relating to the resource of procedural standards in the restrictive regulation of social relations. Based on the analysis of a wide range of doctrinal sources, the authors presented their own position regarding the procedural standard essence and content, its correlation with material standards and its praxiological value.Having singled out the relations of the first, second and third orders in the social environment, the authors see an element connecting material and procedural standards i.e. management, make the conclusions about the relationship between the "process" and the "procedure", the place and the role of procedural legal acts in the system of legislation.

An exploratory pilot study identifying the perceived benefits of accreditation to an environmental management standard, BS 7750, in 13 UK companies. This paper begins by exploring the benefits of "going green", followed by a description of the different environmental management standards. Then the methodology of the study is explored, including the structure of the questionnaire and the sample breakdown. The results section follows, detailing the broad results at each of the three stages of the questionnaire. Main findings are summarised in the conclusion followed by an indication of the future direction of the work. The paper concludes by identifying that the main benefit for companies in gaining an environmental management standard would appear to be the ability to quantify and identify elements of the environmental management process in the company, allowing a company to measure, manage and audit within a structured, recognised format.

AbstractThis article contributes to our understanding of how and why developing countries would comply with international banking regulatory standards, Basel standards. The article demonstrates the interplay between opportunity structures constituted by transnationalization of public policymaking and domestic institutional setting, and how forces of compliance resonate in the domestic politics of compliance. The empirical findings are based on Turkey's compliance with Basel standards. It relies on fieldwork that involves semi-structured qualitative interviews with senior regulators and bankers, which are complemented with analysis of secondary data. The article shows that a capable and willing regulator could capitalize on the top-down policymaking style which restricts the regulatee's access to international negotiations, and sets the terms at the domestic level. Direct access to international negotiations, resource asymmetry in favor of the regulator, and superior "negotiation knowledge" helped the regulator pacify a critical, skeptical regulatee, and drive the compliance process. The article also shows that the compliance process takes place at three stages: policy formulation at the international level, an "interpretation stage" in between the international and the domestic levels, and finally the domestic policy process.

The change involved switching from ensuring consistency of Australian accounting standards with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) developed by the International Accounting Standards Board to outright adoption of IFRSs by 2005. At the time of the announcement, Australia had the most developed international harmonisation programme of any country with a well-developed financial reporting system. Events surrounding the change demonstrate how political the accounting standard-setting process can be as it continues to receive front-page media attention, and as it provides a platform in parliamentary and electoral debate. In the meantime, the US role in the global accounting standard-setting arena has moved through phases of indifference to potential active dominance, and European influences have waxed and waned. We examine whether swings in political and regulatory influences that occur when globalisation becomes a national and international goal are explained by regulatory capture theory. We also address the extent to which a subset of a single nation's regulatory system plays a key role in a series of larger national and international games. Drawing upon experiences in Australia, the United States, and the European Union, we identify political influences on initiatives to reform accounting-standard-setting environments, policies, and processes.
