This work proposes a high-speed Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) based navigation architecture that is appropriate for uncooperative relative space navigation applications. In contrast to current solutions that exploit 3D LIDAR data, our architecture transforms the odometry problem from the 3D space into multiple 2.5D ones and completes the odometry problem by utilizing a recursive filtering scheme. Trials evaluate several current state-of-the-art 2D keypoint detection and local feature description methods as well as recursive filtering techniques on a number of simulated but credible scenarios that involve a satellite model developed by Thales Alenia Space (France). Most appealing performance is attained by the 2D keypoint detector Good Features to Track (GFFT) combined with the feature descriptor KAZE, that are further combined with either the H∞ or the Kalman recursive filter. Experimental results demonstrate that compared to current algorithms, the GFTT/KAZE combination is highly appealing affording one order of magnitude more accurate odometry and a very low processing burden, which depending on the competitor method, may exceed one order of magnitude faster computation.

O conceito designado de "Performance Based Navigation (PBN)" emerge actualmente ao nível da Organização Internacional de Aviação Civil, visando o aperfeiçoamento do sistema de gestão do tráfego aéreo ao nível da eficiência, segurançae capacidade. O conceito PBN promove a modernização da infrastrutura aeronáutica com base na utilização preferencial de sistemas de navegação por satélite, designadamente mediante o recurso a sinais disponibilizados pelas constelações "Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)". Face às vulnerabilidades dos sistemas GNSS a interferências RF, "jamming" deliberado ou fenómenos solares, foi decidido manter uma infrastrutura de recurso/"backup", para mitigar falhas GNSS, baseada numa redede rádio-ajudas terrestres "Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)". Visto que estes DMEs não facultam uma boa cobertura, especialmente a baixa altitude, e tratando-se de equipamentos próximos da obsolescência tecnológica e pouco eficientes em termos de espectro rádioeléctrico, a sua racionalização requer uma tecnologia alternativa. O presente trabalho explora o recurso a novas tecnologias aeronáuticas de comunicações dados ar-solo, designadamente o futuro "data link" OFDM/TDMA de banda L (LDACS), verificando a sua adequação para suportarem as funções de navegação descritas substituindo os DMEs. Pretende-se confirmar a viabilidade com base no conceito de Navegação Relativa (RELNAV) usado em contexto militar recorrendo a filtros Kalman. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) increasingly require the capability to y autonomously in close formation including to facilitate automated aerial refueling (AAR). The availability of relative navigation measurements and navigation integrity are essential to autonomous relative navigation. Due to the potential non-availability of the global positioning system (GPS) during military operations, it is highly desirable that relative navigation can be accomplished without the use of GPS. This paper develops two algorithms designed to provide relative navigation measurements solely from a stereo image pair. These algorithms were developed and analyzed in the context of AAR using a stereo camera system modeling that of the KC-46. Algorithms were analyzed in simulation and then in flight test using two C-12C aircraft at the United States Air Force Test Pilot School. The first algorithm, the Vision and Bayesian Inference Based Integrity Monitor (V5), uses Bayesian inference and template matching to return a probability mass function (PMF) describing the position of an observed aircraft. This PMF provides a relative position estimate as well as a protection level--which characterizes the uncertainty of the relative position estimate--thus providing a degree of navigation integrity. Using both simulation and flight test data, mean V5 spherical error was less than one meter and protection levels reliably characterized algorithm uncertainty. The second algorithm, relative pose estimation with computer vision and iterative closest point (R7), uses stereo vision algorithms and the iterative closest point algorithm to return relative position and attitude estimates. Using both simulation and flight test data, mean R7 spherical error was less than 0.5 meters. Additionally, in flight test, mean R7 attitude errors were less than 3° in all axes.
International audience ; Advancements in mobile technology and computing have fostered the collection of a large number of civic datasets that capture the pulse of urban life. Furthermore, the open government and data initiative has led many local authorities to make these datasets publicly available, hoping to drive innovation that will further improve the quality of life for the city dwellers. In this paper, we develop a novel application that utilizes crime data to provide safe urban navigation. Given a model that allows us to estimate the relative probability of a crime on any road segment, we define two variants of the SafePaths problem where the goal is to find a short and low-risk path between a source and a destination locations. Since both the length and the risk of the path are equally important and they cannot be combined into a single objective, we approach the urban-navigation problemas a biobjective shortest path problem. Our algorithms aim to output a small set of paths that provide tradeoffs between distance and safety. While the solution space of such biobjective problems can be exponentially large, we design efficient algorithms that effectively exploit its structure and geometry. We enhance these algorithms with early-stopping criteria, which in practice lead to four times shorter running times with minimal sacrifices in the information content they provide to the user. In addition, using crime data from Chicago and Philadelphia we develop the required risk model for their street urban networks. Our experiments with this data demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithms and their practical applicability.
AbstractDo animals require rich internal representations, such as cognitive maps, to navigate complex environments? Some researchers believe so, as they argue that sensory information is "too poor" to account for animals' wayfinding abilities. However, this assumption is debatable, as James J. Gibson showed. Gibson proposed that wayfinding involves detecting information about environmental structure over time and used the concepts of "vistas" and "transitions" to explain terrestrial navigation. While these concepts may not apply universally to animal navigation, they highlight the importance of exploiting stable environmental structures for wayfinding. By searching for species-relative environmental structures, we may gain insight into the navigational abilities of different nonhuman animals, while recognizing the unique evolutionary histories and ecological contexts that have shaped these abilities.

Parallel zur schnell voranschreitenden Entwicklung alltäglicher Geräte, die mitgeführt werden, setzt der Übergang der bereits länger dauernden Entwicklung von Virtual-Reality-Technik in eine erweiterte und augmentierte Mixed Reality ein. In diesem Spannungsfeld untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit, inwieweit richtungsgebundene und binaural wiedergegebene Stereofonie die menschliche Bewegung im Raum beeinflussen kann und versucht zu erörtern, welche Potenziale in der Wiederentdeckung einer relativ lange bekannten Technik liegen. Der Autor hat im Rahmen dieser Arbeit eine binaurale mobile Applikation für richtungsgebundene Stereofonie entwickelt, mit der virtuelle bewegte oder statische Audio-Hotspots im Raum platziert werden können. So kann links, rechts oder 30 Meter vor einer Person ein virtueller oder tatsächlicher Klang im Raum verortet sein. Durch die in Echtzeit berechnete binaurale Wiedergabe der Klangquellen mit einem Stereo-Kopfhörer können diese räumlich verorteten Klänge mit zwei Ohren dreidimensional wahrgenommen werden, ähnlich dem räumlichen Sehen mit zwei Augen. Durch den Einsatz mehrerer lokalisierter Klangquellen als Soundscape entsteht eine augmentierte auditive Realität, die die physische Realität erweitert. Political implications in approaches to nationalism and related criticalassessments (Smith 1986, 1991, 1998, 2002 and Guibernau 2004) are touched in some studies that relate this fieldof inquiry with those of music and power, political propaganda, identity and protest (Baily & Collyer 2006, Côrte-Real 2010, Scheding & Levi 2010, Toynbee & Dueck 2011). Theoretical discussions move this field of socialresponsibility. Valuing subject-centred perceptions of moving citizens, music producers, mediators, researchers andlisteners, this paper focuses on moving processes to highlight complex dynamic structures involved in them. To doso it uses elementary knowledge from Navigation Sciences. The idea is to metaphorically point at relative relationsspecific to mobility, underestimated in Social Sciences. Challenging established sets of categories fromclassifications of music genres, nationalist perceptions and historical constructs it equates close and distant forcesneeded to locate positions in the process from previously determined ones. Information for this study was collectedin field and archival work done in the Music Departments and the Centre for Ethnomusicology at ColumbiaUniversity in New York and the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the New University of Lisbon, the Sailing School ofthe Naval Association of Lisbon and the BMW Sailing Academy of Terra Incógnita, also in Lisbon. Quad-Rotor Control develops original control methods for the navigation and hovering flight of an autonomous mini-quad-rotor robotic helicopter. These methods use an imaging system and a combination of inertial and altitude sensors to localize and guide the movement of the unmanned aerial vehicle relative to its immediate environment. The history, classification and applications of UAVs are introduced, followed by a description of modelling techniques for quad-rotors and the experimental platform itself. A control strategy for the improvement of attitude stabilization in quad-rotors is then proposed and tested in real-time experiments. The strategy, based on the use of low-cost components and with experimentally-established robustness, avoids drift in the UAV's angular position by the addition of an internal control loop to each electronic speed controller ensuring that, during hovering flight, all four motors turn at almost the same speed. The quad-rotor's Euler angles being very close to the origin, other sensors like GPS or image-sensing equipment can be incorporated to perform autonomous positioning or trajectory-tracking tasks. Two vision-based strategies, each designed to deal with a specific kind of mission, are introduced and separately tested. The first stabilizes the quad-rotor over a landing pad on the ground; it extracts the 3-dimensional position using homography estimation and derives translational velocity by optical flow calculation. The second combines colour-extraction and line-detection algorithms to control the quad-rotor's 3-dimensional position and achieves forward velocity regulation during a road-following task. In order to estimate the translational-dynamical characteristics of the quad-rotor (relative position and translational velocity) as they evolve within a building or other unstructured, GPS-deprived environment, imaging, inertial and altitude sensors are combined in a state observer. The text gives the reader a current view of the problems encountered in UAV control, specifically those relating to quad-rotor flying machines and it will interest researchers and graduate students working in that field. The vision-based control strategies presented help the reader to a better understanding of how an imaging system can be used to obtain the information required for performance of the hovering and navigation tasks ubiquitous in rotored UAV operation.
