International audience ; Insérer les deux siècles d'histoire de la science des mœurs dans une histoire plus longue, qui s'attacherait à repérer la manière dont les questions économiques se sont articulées à celles relatives aux mœurs, conduit à en privilégier deux étapes anciennes, caractérisées l'une et l'autre par la conjonction d'une perspective normative (théologique pour la première, juridique pour la seconde) et de questions économiques qui lui sont subordonnées : les années 1268 à 1272 d'abord, lorsque Thomas d'Aquin, de retour à l'Université de Paris, rédige la secunda secundae de la Somme théologique et l'essentiel de ses Commentaires sur la philosophie morale et politique d'Aristote ; les années 1622 à 1625 ensuite, lorsque Hugo Grotius, réfugié en France, y publie le Droit de la Guerre et de la Paix. L'une et l'autre montrent, à partir d'une question économique singulière – celle du prêt à intérêt – comment un savoir économique a émergé de la perspective normative à laquelle elle était subordonnée. Une telle émergence s'est cependant réalisée de manières différentes : d'abord sur le mode de l'imbrication chez Thomas d'Aquin, où les questions économiques font l'objet d'un traitement systématique, mais sans pour autant qu'il soit possible de les restituer en évitant de revenir de façon récurrente à la perspective théologique dans laquelle elles s'intègrent ; puis, sur le mode de la séparation chez Hugo Grotius où, en dépit de leur insertion dans une perspective juridique, il devient possible d'en faire abstraction afin d'en rendre compte. C'est ce mouvement initial, de l'imbrication vers la séparation entre un savoir économique émergent et la perspective normative à laquelle il est associé, qui rendra possible à partir des Lumières la cristallisation de ce savoir économique en savoir autonome, redevable désormais aux sciences de la société plutôt qu'à une continuation, aussi élaborée soit-elle, de la religion et du droit.

Stability and security as much as the indivisibility of a state depend on relations between it and religion. The relationship between state and religion is as classic as contemporary. Classical, on the one hand, because it is known that this problem has been solved in France in particular since 1905. This has witnessed the demarcation of the state from religion. On the other hand, and above all, contemporary, because in any human society it is widely accepted that either the State has a relationship of intertwining with religion (then referred to as a sectarian state), or it is still totally irrelevant (when it comes to the secular state). The Cameroonian state, for its part, opts for the latter logic. Indeed, since his very first formal constitution, he solemnly affirmed the rejection of a state religion and as a corollary the protection of this fundamental right of religious freedom and equality. The aim is then to protect religious minorities by rejecting a single religion. The constant quest for harmony, social cohesion and thus national unity is showing the rise of churches, which is also leading to the proliferation of religions, in the major cities of Cameroon. This is compounded by the disruption of public order and the violation of other fundamental rights. The study then raises the fundamental question of relations between the state and religion under Cameroonian law. In this order of concern, the Cameroonian Constitution and its subsequent texts explicitly reject the single religion, on the one hand, and implicitly adhere to the plurality of religion, on the other. On the first point, this is made possible by the assertion of the secular nature of the Republic, against the background, the separation of civil society from religious society, the impartiality and neutrality of the State with regard to religious faiths, and the rejection of a super religion. The analysis represents sociological reflection about the contemporary religion and social conflicts in their most violent form. It is based upon the tragic vicissitudes of the crisis in former Yugoslavia having exploded in a cruel war. The course of events is approached as something having been easily predictable, and deeply embedded in the modern European political and social history, and, therefore, with high symptomatic relevance, to be interpreted not primarily as a kind of tail of the world of the XIXth century but as an extreme case of some current trends of wider dimensions. The war is interpreted as the almost unavoidable consequence of political strategies pursuing the same but diametrically opposed political objectives, best described by Mazzini's political formula "Every nation a state and only one state for every nation" or Gellner's sociological one "One nation, one culture, one state". Therefore, the crucial problem becomes the problem of the role of religion and churches in an area with mixed populations but dominated by opposed nationalism. The theoretical framework for interpretation of nationalist political strategies is taken from Gellner as well as from Offe. The crucial fact is that the nationalist political strategies or the ethnicification of politics have obtained not only mass support on the part of believers and belongers to the respective religious comunities but also their specific legitimacy in religious terms. Some major consequences of such a legitimization of nationalist political strategies are traced and described on three different levels and settings: a) a general level, b) a long range historical one, and c) a transitional one. The crucial conclusions arrived at are that an expected spiritual re-awakening focused upon a restoration of personal moral consciousness and renewed interest in spirituality and spiritual tradition has been practically inundated by a tidal wave of nationalization of the sacred and sacralization of the nation. Therefore, the most extensive religious revival has occured so far alongside to nationalist movements.

L'article se propose, en tenant compte du développement des études simmeliennes, de saisir les relations entre sociologie pure du phénomène religieux et analyse de la catégorie religieuse comme cadre général de formation de la réalité. Une première partie rappelle les grands thèmes de la sociologie pure de Simmel. La seconde partie précise les étapes qui mènent à la monographie de 1906 puis commente l'idée centrale de Die Religion : la religion est la mise en forme d'une religiosité diffuse présente dans de nombreuses manifestations ou relations sociales, qui ne sont pas à strictement parler religieuses. Une approche de certains phénomènes sociaux en terme de religiosité, l'étude des conditions du passage de la religiosité diffuse à la religion, l'approche enfin des analyses par Simmel de la situation religieuse de son temps complètent le tableau et illustrent l'intérêt d'un nouveau regard critique des sociologues des religions sur une oeuvre encore trop méconnue.
