The author investigates the origin and development of the concept of liberty and its special meaning in the Republican tradition of political thought. The origin of the Western concept of liberty lies in ancient Greece, in the opposition between liberty and slavery conceived after the liberation of Athens from tyranny and the victory over the Persian empire. The author then investigates the Republican notion of liberty that originates in ancient Rome and reaches its peak with Cicero. This conception of liberty emphasizes self-government and partecipation in common deliberation and runs through Western political thought up to Rousseau, Tocqueville and the authors of the Federalist Papers.
; The PhD thesis analyses the most important biographical events of Alberico Gentili, starting from his religious etherodoxal beliefs until his flee – religionis causa – in England, where, through his relations with Philip Sidney, Walsingham and, later, the Earl of Essex, he was granted a seat as regius professor of Civil Law at Oxford. The work takes a look a the broader contest of anglo-italian cultural transition in the late Rinascimental age, focusing on the connections between Alberico Gentili, english printers and italian refugees among which Giacomo Castelvetro had a key role. In his masterpiece, De iure belli, Gentili makes obsolete the bellum iustum and replaces it with a legitimation of war which lays its foundations on the sovereignity of State. Another pivotal issue is the eulogy of Machiavelli's Discorsi that appears on De legationibus, in which Alberico draws an innovative interpretation of Machiavelli as a republicanist and a fierce enemy of tiranny. This passionate eulogy started a vivid debate about Gentili's republicanism. The thesis analize the debate putting Gentili's works on a continuum, suspended on the one hand, between simpathy for republicanism, and on the other hand, the urging necessity of an absolute power for the sake of the State. Gentili's fortune is another issue of the work, that points out to a cultural triangolation between England, Italy and Germany, where Alberico's younger brother Scipione edited several works of his eldest brother. The thesis focuses then on the reception of Gentili's juridical works on Sutcliffe, Fulbecke and Shakespeare, showing a clear influence of the italian jurist on the late Elizabethan age. The thesis shows that in Germany the reception of Gentili is much more focused, in the XVII century, about his republican reading of Machiavelli, notably this occurred in the works of Christ and Conring. In Italy a special place for the republican interpretation of Machiavelli made by Alberico, can be found in Lampredi and Galanti. A very important, and quite puzzling, case is that of the future cardinal Antonelli that uses authority of De iure belli, despite the fact that Gentili's opera omnia was at the Index of librorum prohibitorum, to legitimate Papal assertions over Parma and Piacenza during the war of Austrian Succession. ; Dottorato di ricerca in Storia dell'Europa XIV-XX secolo (XXVII ciclo)
This paper discusses Kant's dealing with a fundamental of modern politics, that is concept of sovereignty, as well as its own capacity to reshape political order. Overcoming failures and fallacies that traditionally such a concept has maintained, Kant's political philosophy focuses on the way to reach international peace institutionally. Starting from the discuss of contradiction in sovereignty, the paper points out the analogy between individuals and states; then, elements of Kant's cosmopolitan philosophy will be presented, which is assumed as a theory of a 'world republic'. Kant's project seeks to rewrite the modern state theory, defending individual rights, the rule of law and promoting republicanism, which is, according to him, a theory that shares state's powers and defends representation. Extending such a theory from domestic to the global sphere, Kant's final solution for a World Republic implies a change of paradigm (though not completely espounded), by which modern sovereignty gets reassessed into a blended institutionalized coercion that emphasizes vertical power-sharing, thanks to federalism. Accordingly, this model of supranational world republicanism seeks to realize a cosmopolitan way for the world order.

From the very first pages of the Theological-political Treatise, Spinoza deals with the issue of prophecy with a clear purpose, that is to expunge any possible relation between prophetical language and godly transcendence, in order to prevent that prophecy could become an instrument of domination in the hands of the theocratic power. Anyway, Spinoza also maintains that the prophetic message played a relevant ethical and political role among the ancient people, especially among the Hebrews, since it contributed to create a social bond, based upon the passions and the imaginations of the community. Such an ambivalent peculiarity of prophecy seems to have disappeared in Spinoza's times, insofar as «we have no prophets in our day» (TTP, chapter 1), but only preachers who make use of popular superstition to strengthen their authority. Actually, we can explain differently this TTP's statement, by considering a possible influence of the Collegiant movement in Spinoza's thought, and therefore maintaining that the free prophetic discussion represents the genesis of any process aimed both to liberate individuals from superstition and to resist to non-democratic rules.
This essay analyses the importance of the works of Machiavelli in Tommaseo's thought. The impact that the maxims and precepts of Machiavelli have on the historical, literary and Risorgimento view of Tommaseo, is brought out through a detailed study of the sources.
International audience ; This article is dedicated to the use of the English republican history (1649-1660) in France, from the fall of Robespierre to the first anniversary of the Napoleon's rise to power (1794-1800). The analysis focuses on the role played by the English precedent during the crucial junctures that have marked the existence of the French Republic, from Thermidor to end of the Directory. This part is preceded by a critical review of the recent historiographical debate on the link between Republicanism and French Revolution and it concludes with a brief reflection on the consequences induced by the revolutionary experience on the ideas of revolution and republic.
The palladium of the people's rights. Freedom of the press as a counterpower in Kant and in the revolutionary writings When, in 1793, Kant described the «freedom of the pen» as «the sole palladium of the rights of the people», he was using a widely known expression that had been circulating for almost a century. The term «palladium» had in fact been used to qualify freedom of expression and freedom of the press, in different years, countries and contexts, similarly to terms such as «bulwark», «guardian» or «sentinel». These conceptual constellations, which provided the theoretical arsenal to the American Independents and the French Revolutionaries, can been seen to be interwined with English republicanism, Lockian theory of natural rights and with the thought of Montesquieu and Rousseau. This article attempts to trace and map the circulation and reinterpretation of political theories across England, its overseas colonies and France, which identified freedom of expression and of the press with a sui generis right. Such right was placed as a guardian of all other rights, in order to protect them from the abuses of constituted power. It was a right that citizens held within, but also against the state and, as such, was a fragile yet powerful right, frowned upon by governments because of its intrinsic link with the right of resistance and its potentially subversive nature. Since 1698, Matthew Tindal's arguments in favour of freedom of the press have included the thesis of the essentially dialogical nature of knowledge (and the consequent identification of rational activity with a public process) and the insinuation that it was opposed by governments dedicated to activities that feared the light of day. The motto of revolutionary France, according to which «publicity is the safeguard of the people», also concentrated these two aspects: «publicity» could be understood as meaning both the transparency of political and governmental action, as opposed to the opacity and secrecy of despotic regimes, and freedom of ...
International audience ; This article aims to capture the specificity of the economic thinking of the Italian Revolutionary Triennio. On the one hand, the purpose is to emphasize the value attributed to the economic freedom, perceived not only as an essential factor for economic prosperity but also as a constituent element of the new democratic and republican society. On the other hand, the article intends to contextualise this adherence to the principle of economic freedom in the framework of the broader economic reflection that took shape during the revolutionary phase. This economic reflection envisages a dynamic and industrious commercial society as a whole, explicitly opposed to the model of the ancient republicanism, anchored on the work and the valorisation of material well-being.
; Remarks on several parts of Italy & c. in the years 1701, 1702, 1703, written by Joseph Addison, are the account of a Grand Tour in Italy. Remarks have often been considered as the origin of a stereotype on Italy, for the content of Addison's reflections about the land der klassik, and their impact on XVIII and XIX-century readers. Addison travelled in Italy paying attention on manners, political troubles and cultural aspects, as well. His curious glance was attracted by the artistic beauties and the unique landscapes; his acute speculations pertained to political considerations. Scholars have often underestimated his insight and potentiality as a politician, notwithstanding his background as a Secretary of State in England. This study aims to clarify the historical and cultural sense of that travel around the Italian republics, notably, Genoa, Lucca and San Marino, together with Leghorn, an important free port at that time, local seat of an important British factory. Addison's republican interest is motivated by his Oxonian classical studies, and the particular attention about these towns is justified by the fact that they seemed preserve the antique spirit of the Roman republic and he, true empiricist as he was, wanted to see it from life, on the spot, checking the practicality of this institution and the pragmatic effects of it, as well. Addison was a grand tourist and a good political observer, as well, seeking to go back over all the good of republicanism and its moral values. In Chapter one semantic and theoretical analysis of the travel, as a cognitive category of the other and the elsewhere, has been carried out; ancient and modern reflections, in order to demonstrate the complexity of travel literature as a genre, have been quoted. In Chapter two phenomenology of the Grand Tour as a European cultural experience has been analysed, together with relevant aspects of Addison's biography, in order to understand the genesis of his travel in Italy, and the cultural meaning of it in Addison's life. In Chapter three important passages of Remarks about Genoa, Lucca, San Marino and Leghorn have been examined, Addison's impressions on them can be appreciated; they have been compared and juxtaposed to contemporary and XIX-century historians' judgments. Report of the Italian towns is anticipated by a short presentation of current and past theories on republicanism. Travels in those towns have been always analysed from a historical and cultural point of view, and Addison's reflections have been compared to other important journals, written by many famous XVI to XIX-century travellers, in order to support or confute them. Dedication to Lord Somers, Preface and the whole passages on Genoa, Lucca, San Marino and Leghorn from the Remarks have been translated into Italian, and you can find all of them in the Appendix.
[English]: The volume collects the interventions held at the International Conference Beyond Republicanism. Political modernity and the origins of the State. Comparing experiences and disciplines (1350-1600), that took place in Naples during April 2018. It also includes a number of external contributions deemed in line with the spirit of the conference. The works included in the volume describe the rich variety of intersecting traditions and specialist languages that, roughly between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, cross their paths during the great junction of modernity: from the juridical tradition to that of the ars dictaminis, to the humanities of the Reinassance and post-Reinassance period, all nourished by classical thought, the book's reflection invests the conceptual and discursive structures which - amid conflicts, contradictions and adaptations - combine to form the modern idea of the State. The "case study" of Aragonese Naples (1442-1503) demonstrates how this historically determined reality has represented an avant-garde laboratory of the European ethical and socio-political modernity. The last section addresses, from a historical-critical and philosophical-political point of view, the challenges that the contemporary era poses to political modernity and doctrine, and perhaps even more so to the nature of the State itself. In the background, the volume suggests to explore a renewed approach to the conceptualization of politics and public behavior, starting with a reflection on European thought between the late Middle Ages and the early modern age.

The second tome of "La felicità è un'idea nuova in Europa" deals with a major theme: it allows the reader and the scientific community to test the latest and most important interpretations of the French Revolution through lexicologic and lexicometric data. The authors' work is based on a 'corpus' of 7,000,000 'tokens', that is currently the widest digitized 'corpus' on the French Revolution examinable by the linguistic software. In order to have digital copies, authors first scanned the original sources and then extracted text from images with a OCR application. The txt and doc files were finally compared with sources. The lexicologic and lexicometric works were assembled through the following computer software: 'Bruco', 'Concordance', 'Lexico 3', 'Treetagger'. An articulate and wide introduction leads the reader into the bibliographic references involved in the choice of any single lexia. Except for the revolutionary catechisms, at the moment the corpus cannot be published on-line, due to the bans of copyright. It contains the following bibliography: Marat's 'Œuvres politiques' (10 volumes, Bruxelles, 1989-1993) and works from his pre-revolutionary period; Robespierre's 'Œuvres' (11 volumes, Paris, 2000-2007); Saint-Just's 'Œuvres complètes' (Paris, 1984); Hébert's newspaper, 'Le Père Duchesne' (10 volumes, Paris, 1969); Lequinio's speech, 'Du Bonheur' (20 brumaire an second); 112 revolutionary catechisms (105 printed editions and 7 manuscripts). The volume suggests indexes of frequency, concordances, concurrences, diagrams, temporal flows, collocations and tag clouds of some lexias at the heart of the historiographic debate of the French Revolution. The concordance of the string dict* refers to the debates about the influence of the French Revolution on the shift from the idea of "commissarial dictatorship" of the Ancients to the modern idea of revolutionary "sovereign dictatorship". The concordances of the lexias 'bonheur' and 'félicité' integrate the results of research authors already explained in the first tome and they refers to a keyword in the lexicon of the Revolution. The concordances of 'liberté publique', 'droit(s) naturel(s)', 'droit(s) de la nature', 'nature humaine', 'ennemi(s) de l'humanité', 'ennemi(s) du peuple', 'hors (de)(-)la(-)loi' refer to the Terror and to the Republicanism issues. The concordance of 'terreur' is at the core of the historiographic debates about the French Revolution, which authors already addressed in the first volume through the specific reference to Robespierre. The concordance of the string veng* refers to the Terror issues, too. In this case, the reader can test the interpretations that identify the 'vengeance' as the explanatory element of the Terror, through the speeches of the main characters of the Revolution and in the dialectics Revolution–Counter-Revolution. The last group of lexicographic and lexicometric data of this volume concerns a central feature in the studies on the Revolution: the 'sans-culotte'. The suggested linguistic material confirms the polysemy of the noun 'sans-culotte' in the lexicon of the Revolution. It proves the gap between the political and the social use of this noun, that caused many contrasts among scholars, who meditated on the suggestions and symbolism of this republican emblem.
