Populist protest movements, groups and parties keep growing - they fuel feelings of resentment against Europe that feed on a general discomfort about politics, the government and the media. The contributions in this volume illuminate the murky terrain of nationalism, populism and extremism in Europe and ask for the reasons of the ever-increasing allure of anti-democratic fundamentalism, terrorism and environments of violence. In addition, they discuss how we can grasp the rationale of this resentment and the fascination with violence and fanaticism.
Antisemitism is a multi-layered phenomenon that in the past has always been able to adapt to new societal conditions without losing its essence as an ideology of (pseudo-)rebellion against capitalist modernity. New forms of articulation and manifestation, which are often found in anti-racist and feminist movements as resentment against Israel, require an interdisciplinary approach in order to understand antisemitism as a projective world explanation of bourgeois society and to be able to take preventive action against it. The volume sheds light on ideological continuities, new modes of communication and the diverse actors of an increasingly globally integrated antisemitic discourse.

The NoPegida protests formed in many places as a reaction to Pegida, the 'Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamicization of the Occident'. If Pegida was interpreted as an expression of resentments toward religious minorities, the 'lying press' and the 'traitors'; then NoPegida is viewed as the shining counter-example: they stand for cosmopolitanism, freedom, equality and tolerance, and as such are perceived as the guardians and expression of an inclusive and functioning civil society and as the shapers of a 'culture of welcoming'. But what is NoPegida really about? What motivates the protest? What do the concepts of freedom, equality, tolerance and cosmopolitanism mean to the protestors, and which political interpretive models and hierarchies of value inform them? After the successful volume on Pegida published in early 2015, the Göttinger Institute for Democracy Studies now provides a detailed image of the counter-protests, and investigates the extent to which NoPegida can be interpreted as a democratic counterpart to Pegida.
