Between Christian Monasticism and Islamic ribāṭ in Ifrīqiya

Ribāṭ is one of the prevalent sets of fortified constructions in the Islamic world. The North African coastal frontiers contain various fortifications, erected over earlier Christian sites and close to the ruins of earlier Christian monasteries. A "traditionalist" opinion maintains that these ribāṭs were monasteries or convents for ascetic warriors, among which Monastir (al-Munastīr) is believed to be the oldest in Ifrīqiya. A "revisionist" opinion describes these sites as fortifications with no ascetic purpose, functioning as places of refuge or as trading posts. Both positions cannot be fully accepted, because the case of the ribāṭ Monastir shows how the endowments linked to the ribāṭs in this geographic area merged both the ascetic and defensive purposes. It will be argued that one purpose does not rule out the other, because both seem to have been two distinct coexisting aspects of the same multifaceted institution.
Monedas, rebeldes y ribāṭ-s a finales del Emirato andalusí ; Coins, rebels and ribāṭ-s at the end of the emirate in al-Andalus
; During the second half of the 9th century, the Umayyad Emirate in al-Andalus faced some significant problems. As a consequence, there was a drastic decrease in the minting of coins, and mints had almost disappeared by the end of the century. Nevertheless, coins circulating at that time show that the existing mints were not directly controlled by the Umayyad Emirate, but were normally controlled by different dynasties. This paper discusses the circulation of the coins made during the period when the mints controlled by the Emirate appear to have been closed. The political and economic situation seems to have been particularly complex during the period discussed in this paper. As some coins show a close relationship with the ribāṭ-s, the relevant records have been analysed.

; At the beginning Ğihād was in Islam a militaristic spirit that articulates a defence of the religion, or what is the same, of the Muslim State, by means of arms. When in the first century of the Hegira it becomes impossible to continue the expansion of the Islamic State, the Ribāṭ was articulated as a substitute for Ğihād. It involved the internalization of the same spirituality, now understood not as a collective and official precept, but as individual command and internal fight. We revise the data from Arab sources about the Ribāṭ and its performance in the building known as rābiṭa. The function of these buildings, historiography, juridical frame, religious life and the economy related to the rābiṭa-s are explained. Toponymic traces and material vestiges of the rābiṭa-s at the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, especially those found in Guardamar del Segura are explained as well.
