The relationship between ideological identification & political protest in democracies is examined based on a comparative analysis of survey data from adults in the Federal Republic of Germany, Israel, & Peru (N = 714, 1,266, & 1,571, respectively) measuring political protest, ideological identification, party identification, public goods motivation, personal normative beliefs, & social network incentives. The traditional association of political protest with left-wing ideology was not completely supported by the results, & it is suggested that party identification partially mediates the relationship between political protest & ideological identity. Expected utility variables were the most reliable predictors of protest behavior, & it is thereby argued that ideological identification is significantly impacted by the expected utility of identity & action. The results support the theory that individuals at either extreme of the political spectrum are more likely to define themselves as agents of political protest, & to act accordingly. Although the study did not directly account for the political stance of the incumbent party, political protest was highest among groups opposing the ideological stance of the incumbent party in each country, & it is concluded that this variable should be further considered in future research. 10 Tables, 3 Figures. Introduces a collection of papers investigating the role of women in radical & nonmainstream political movements in modern US society from a variety of perspectives. Despite their diversity, contributions share several themes: (1) Gender shapes political identity & consciousness. (2) Women's radicalism is sensible only in terms of local organizational contexts & personal histories. (3) Women's militant activism is nurtured in institutions that privilege emotional issues. (4) Women's activism is directly connected to wider social & political contexts that can be supportive, hostile, or neutral. 33 References. D. Ryfe

The influence of both external & internal factors on the development of individual political consciousness & identity is explored among activists in a left-wing (Students for a Democratic Society [SDS]) & a right-wing (Young Americans for Freedom [YAF]) political movement during the 1960s. Data are drawn from a larger study by the author (1999) that has followed members of these movements through their adult lives. Karl Mannheim's (1952) theory of generations is drawn on to explain how two key external factors -- historical location & social background -- created these two widely divergent political movements among young people during this era. Two key internal factors affecting the political consciousness & identity formation of individual activists are identified -- peer relations & organizational size. It is argued that these external & internal factors were not discrete, but interacted to help frame political issues & shape movement development & commitment. K. Hyatt Stewart

(GF)
