URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0402132 ; Until now there has been a dearth of qualitative research on right-wing extremist organizations. We know little about the daily routines of "doing politics" in these specific life-worlds. There is also little research concerning the gendered substructure of right-wing extremist parties. Many of the studies that have been done focus on women's roles in such organizations, but the vast majority of its members and supporters, namely men, are seldom analyzed. In his excellent study, Oliver GEDEN explores a rather difficult field of research, examining in which way one of the most successful right-wing extremist parties in Europe, the Freedom Party of Austria, is constructing masculinity. GEDEN not only analyzes the masculinity discourse in two party periodicals, he also conducts group discussions with party officials in order to reconstruct what masculinity means to them in their everyday lives. Furthermore, he reflects about the specific conditions of doing qualitative research on right-wing extremist organizations, particularly on the handling of access restrictions and the requirements of research ethics. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0401215 ; During this workshop scholars presented new, mainly empirical studies which explored different aspects of right-wing extremism in Germany. While a number of talks focused on political strategies and modern forms of organization of local neo-Nazi scenes, political elites and the music industry, others had chosen a biographical view on the personal development of young right-wing extremists. Studies on the local context of and conditions for right-wing extremist actions were complemented by representative survey data on political attitudes of German citizens. Apart from discussions about the phenomenon of right-wing extremism itself, participants had the opportunity to exchange their experience of doing empirical qualitative research in a dangerous field. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0204488 ; Because of the strict separation between biography and politics, the research of social movements has reached its limits. The biographical perspective can introduce a productive combination of biography and politics, private and public space into the research of social movements. Individual and collective change always have to be seen in correlation with each other. The volume describes scientific flexibility and the need for this scientific approach, presenting case studies of transformation processes in Germany, Poland, Russia, China and the USA. The case studies include a variety of pressure groups such as the peace movement, women's rights, exiles, trade unions and right-wing extremists. The issues ...
; The election of Die Republikaner into the parliament of Baden-Württemberg in the year 1996 has been a novelty in the history of the Bundesrepublik. For the first time parliamentary representatives of a party considered to be extremist right-winged succeeded in getting elected into a Landtag for the second consecutive time. Does this mean, that the Republikaner have developed from an extremist right-winged party to an established, radical right-winged one? First the origins, functions and strategies of opposition are presented and the terms opposition, extremist right-winged, radical right-winged and establishing are defined. After this the Republikaner at the levels of Bund and Land, their history, their programmes, their electorate, their internal dynamics and, in the case of the nation-wide party, their work in parliaments are portrayed. The question whether the Republikaner are a extremist right-winged party is discussed and provisionally affirmed. The analysis of the work of the parliamentary party in the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg makes use of a qualitative analysis of the parliamentary initiatives, the communiqués issued to the press and the public relations of the parliamentary party, the speeches of their members during the plenary sessions and the work in the committees of the parliament between 1992 and 1997. A content analysis is followed by a numerical description. In addition the results of a survey on the self-perception of the members of the parliament party of the Republikaner are included. Because of low participation rates, however, no valid results have come to light. The study shows that as an opposition the Republikaner in the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg mainly pursued a competitive strategy. After a period of settling down, the Republikaner used this strategy successfully to establish itself as an opposition in the parliament, especially in the areas of asylum and criminal politics. At the same time they benefited from the particular Coalition. Instead of advocating different ideas in a credible manner the Coalition often did adopt views made popular by the Republikaner or tried to forestall corresponding initiatives with similar initiatives of their own. Hence, the views of the Republikaner became more an more accepted by society. Nation-wide the party did not establish itself. After analysing the work in the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg the study confirms the provisional result that the Republikaner are an extremist right-winged party. Accordingly, the Republikaner in Baden-Württemberg are still an extremist right-winged party which nevertheless showed, above all during the twelfth legislative period, radical right-winged tendencies.
(DIPF/Orig.) ; The authors present first results of a research project examining right-wing-oriented attitudes among adolescents within the framework of school-related relationships of mutual recognition. Following a short survey of the latest developments in research, the presentation of the research design of the project in question, and some of the central quantitative findings on rightwing, ethnocentric, and violence-prone attitudes among students in one of the old and one of the new Laender, the authors analyze – in a second step – the occurrence of right-wing orientations among adolescents learning at the individual schools forming part of their study and, based on this examination, they compare highly affected and lesser affected schools. In this context, they ask whether there exists a connection between a high or a low occurrence of right-wing attitudes among adolescents at the individual schools and the quality of the school-internal relationships of mutual recognition. In a final outlook, the present findings are assessed and possible perspectives for further research are developed. (DIPF/Orig.)
; This dissertation deals with the partially pre-war based ideological prerequisites, contents and goals regarding foreign affairs designed and propagated by the German "völkisch" movement during the initial (troubled) years of the Weimar Republic (1918-1923). By way of introduction, this paper analyses and defines the ideological prerequisites of the German "völkisch" way of thinking: the understanding of politics and foreign affairs of the German "völkisch" as well as their understanding of war and military as a means of foreign affairs as well as their racism as a central fixing point of the German "Völkisch" picture of mankind. Racial antisemitism turns out to be an integral, but also emphasised part of the generic "Racism" and is therefore not examined isolatedly. This results in a new interpretation of the "Deutschvölkischer Schutz- und Trutzbund" (DVSTB), which was not only an antisemitic organisation, as it was regarded by historians so far, but also a racist organisation. Founded in February of 1919, the DVSTB became the largest and dominating individual organisation until its nearly Reich-wide prohibition in summer of 1922. Its dominance was due to its already in the beginning Reich-wide existing network of "Ortsgruppen" (regional groups) and fast rise of members (summer 1922: approximately 150 000 to 180 000 members). The "völkisch" movement in a whole showed signs of fragmentation into regionally acting small and very small groups. Therefore, the DVSTB was chosen to be the pars pro toto for the movement in the paper. Another step in the analysis examines how the German "völkisch" integrated the (in their social darwinist point of view) most important, because most powerful and strongest people (the "English" US Americans, French and Russians) into their racist picture of mankind and which traditional stereotypes they used for this means. Above that, this dissertation explains how the German "völkisch" perceived the from their point of view most important events in foreign affairs and which position they took up resulting from their basic ideological views. This dissertation explores the question which long-term goals the German "völkisch" movement already developed in the beginning of the Weimar Republic. Gaining "Lebensraum im Osten" (living space in the East), a claim which was already made in the middle of the 19th century, is particularly explained as an example of these goals. These goals proved to be the official German goals in foreign affairs from 1933 on. This dissertation concludes with the contacts to foreign right-wing extremists the DVSTB tried to establish with minor success to found a "völkisch" or "Weiße Internationale" (White International). The analysis shows links to other central parts of "völkisch" ideology, for example "völkisch" negations such as anti-republic as well as anti-democratic views, anti-parlamentarism, anti-communism, anti-liberalism, anti-feminism, anti-industrialism, and anti-urbanism. Repeatedly, this dissertation shows methods the DVSTB used to work against the representatives and against the constitutional order of the Weimar Republic. "Völkisch" views regarding foreign affairs are therefore shown in the superordinate context of "völkisch" anti-modernism and herewith in the overall context of a manifold spectrum of "völkisch" ideology and propaganda.
This article seeks to explore the link between the campaign propaganda of the National Socialists and the electoral gains of the NSDAP. Two conditions are analyzed which might modify an effect of NSDAP propaganda on the party's electoral scores. First, it is examined whether the impact of NSDAP meetings depends on the percentage of 'nationalistic' voters. Second, it is tested whether the public meetings of the NSDAP's right-wing competitors could restrain the effect of National Socialist campaign propaganda. The multivariate analysis of a sample of 226 communities demonstrates that the NSDAP's campaign intensity significantly advanced the rise of the party. This influence of NSDAP propaganda is indeed the larger, the higher the percentage of 'nationalistic' voters in a community. Moreover, the analysis reveals the effect of NSDAP propaganda to be greater in communities where the public activities of the party's right-wing rivals were above the average. Overall, the findings presented in the article strongly suggest that NSDAP propaganda is an important predictor of the party's increase.
(DIPF/Orig.)
The article deals with the German-Jewish discourse focussing on the decade before the unification of the two German states, and the period of unification itself. In spite of various German attempts at normalization and reconciliation and the endeavor to "step out of Hitler's shadow", the Nazi past is still present. But the presence of the past has antagonistic character insofar as the historical consciousness of the German political mainstream and of the Jewish survivors and their children drift apart. For most Germans the past of the Third Reich and the Holocaust has been substituted by another past: the decades of communist rule in East Germany. At the same time, the taboo on anti-Semitism which characterized the immediate postwar period, is fading away. Anti-Semitic sentiment and attitudes come to the fore in the political and cultural spheres whilst right-wing extremism perpetuates traditional racial anti-Semitism. The unification and the revival of German nationalism prove to be catalysts of renewed anti-Jewish attitudes. ; The article deals with the German-Jewish discourse focussing on the decade before the unification of the two German states, and the period of unification itself. ; The German economic miracle" after the second world war is connected with the design of an economic policy labeled Social Market Economy which forms a third path between capitalism (pure or free market economy) and socialism (centrally planned economy). This notion is relevant for New Labor in Britain as well as for the Social Democrats in Germany. Social Market Economy is usually perceived as an idea aimed at reaching social justice and national peace and thus avoiding the traditional class struggle between capital and labor. However, this idea also requires a change in the paradigm of economic thinking from traditional self-organization by markets to a mixture of social control of both government and markets. Until now, however, economic theory has refused to follow this new paradigm, thus resulting in a deficiency of theory in the field of Social Market Economy. Microeconomic theory is dominating the current economic thinking. The realization of a socially responsible market economy" should be done pragmatically by political recognition of changing challenges and situations, thus establishing the welfare state in democratic decisions. History has shown that governments have often alternated between the right wing and the left wing. During the sixties, the Social Democrats retained the well established concepts of a Social Market Economy, but attempted to design a left wing" version thereof, aimed at more political control. In Germany, suffering from the first great crisis in the Federal Republic, this was done in order to reach a higher degree of economic stability. The ensuing governments, led by the Christian Democrats in Germany, attempted to reduce the welfare state using the slogan more market, less state". Not even the great challenge of transforming the former socialist parts of Germany into a market economy gave rise to the idea of a new Social Market Economy". Similarly, it is argued in this paper that there is no need for a new Social Market Economy": The old one is open for reforms from the left as well as from the right wing as experience over more than 50 years has demonstrated. The original Social Market Economy is worth being defended even in view of globalization and is recommended for many economies all over the world in order to avoid globalization of the traditional class struggle" between capital and labor. A necessary condition for any socially controlled market economy" are properly working political institutions and governments. Therefore, in order to ensure the necessary public interventions, national states must not vanish, as prophets of globalization often maintain. On the contrary, a political countervailing power is necessary to discipline the global economic players" as well as to avoid political hegemony of one or more national states. In a global world, only the national states can guarantee decisions along the so called subsidiary principle" of Social Market Economy.
; This work primarly focusses on the election victory of the threefold right-wing alliance around Silvio Berlusconi in Italy 1994. Using the coa, ition theory as a basic framework this thesis goes far behind the analyse of the 94 victory of the 'polo delle libertà', giving for the first time an complete overview about the political system of italy from the fifties tio to the nineties, describing the political programs of Forza Italia, Lega Nord and Alleanza nazionale and moreover giving an oversight on their organizational structure. Interviews with important party leaders of FI, LN and An are also included.
During the interwar period the reemerging Hungarian market economy was quickly swept away by the effects of the Great Depression, which shattered the traditional consensus of the social elites, i.e. aristocractic landowners, entrepreneurs and the socalled military-bureaucratic elite. The latter, primarily intellectuals and smallholders of aristocratic descent, when forced to take employment, monopolized most of the administrative and army-positions. Under their growing influence the government started a huge military investment program, the "Györ Program" of 1938, which triggered an upward spiral of budget spending. Market-economy institutions were replaced by a variety of government agencies, which aimed at controlling and coordinating the increasingly difficult distribution of increasingly scarce goods and services. Wanting to establish a corporative, fascist society, the right-wing faction of the military-bureaucratic elite politically neutralised the aristocracy and eliminated - first socially and eventually physically - the Jewish bourgeosie. In contrast to its predorninantly agrarian neighbours Hungary in 1938 exhibited all signs of a country standing at the treshhold of a developed economy. War economy and its regulatory measures resulted in a disproportionate industrial growth. lt was with this structural legacy that Hungary entered the phase of a state controlled, planned economy. ; During the interwar period the reemerging Hungarian market economy was quickly swept away by the effects of the Great Depression, which shattered the traditional consensus of the social elites, i.e. aristocractic landowners, entrepreneurs and the socalled military-bureaucratic elite. (Autorenreferat). ; In research on the development of political attitudes in adolescents there are commonly emphasized different single aspects of socialisation. To obtain an extensive understanding of the processes of the development of socio-political attitudes, research has to take into consideration different experiences and their interrelations. This article identifies different factors that are connected to ethnocentric orientations of young males and analyses their interrelations: Relationship with parents, quality of peer-relations, and contact to right-wing attitudes in peer-groups. Three case-analyses make clear that quite different backgrounds of personal experiences can contribute to the development of an ethnocentric orientation. A multiperspective analysis in this way shows the conditional structures, in which different aspects of socialisation are connected to each other and to ethnocentric orientations. So it becomes clear that ethnocentric orientations must be conceptualized as combined result of emotional and cognitive aspects of experiences in various relationships. (DIPF/Orig.)
