This book examines the response to right-wing extremism in the US from both the government and non-governmental organisations and provides a detailed portrait of contemporary extreme right in the United States.

A comprehensive and detailed analysis of the five main parties of the extreme right in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Using primary research - including internal party documents - the author concludes that the core ideology of these parties is xenophobic nationalist.

The Revival of Right-Wing Extremism in the Nineties takes a refreshingly original approach to the phenomenon of the radical right. Most studies in this field have tended to concentrate on particular movements in a single country, neglecting to a greater or lesser extent the international dimensions of right-wing extremism. Peter Merkl and Leonard Weinberg, by contrast, adopt a comparative perspective, concentrating on the revival of the right across a variety of countries. The book, for example, contains data from Lauri Karvonen reviewing levels of support for rightist values in all members of the European Union, a chapter by Piero Ignazi discussing the appearance of a 'silent counter-revolution' all over western Europe, and Peter Merkl's exploration of the reasons for the popularity of right-wing parties in Europe at this particular point in the continent's history.

Over the last 20 years the post-war centre-ground which recognized the welfare state, the funding of education, protection of the environment and the management of capitalism as the proper business of the state, has fragmented. The New Left of the 1990s is more conservative than the Old Left of the 1960s and 70s. Emphasis on the freedom of the individual and the proper limitations of state power has changed the climate of everyday life.
